President Donald Trump on Friday announced that he would invite South African farmers facing dispossession of their lands by the government to come to the United States with a pathway to citizenship.

"South Africa is being terrible, plus, to long time Farmers in the country," he posted on Truth Social. "They are confiscating their LAND and FARMS, and MUCH WORSE THAN THAT. A bad place to be right now, and we are stopping all Federal Funding. To go a step further, any Farmer (with family!) from South Africa, seeking to flee that country for reasons of safety, will be invited into the United States of America with a rapid pathway to Citizenship. This process will begin immediately!"

The South African government has long floated land redistribution in light of the white population's disproportionate ownership of farming lands. During his first term, Trump discussed the phenomenon of racially-motivated farm murders in that country and has become more critical of Johannesburg in recent years.

Some have pointed to the influence of the South African-born Elon Musk as a motivating factor for his attention to the issue.
