Witness the Catastrophic Results of Identity Theft by Illegal Immigrants

As a matter of unlovely habit, apologists for illegal immigrants are wont to dismissively declare that, by entering the United States without permission and remaining here without the requisite legal dispensation, they have committed only a “civil infraction.” Insofar as this is true, it represents such a limited rejoinder to the objection as to be meaningless. Rare is the illegal immigrant who breaks into America and then does nothing else besides. Illegal immigrants work without permission. They dodge the country’s archipelago of employment law. They use government services that are designed to exclude them. They dishonestly submit forms that compel faithfulness in their authors. To respond to these abuses by insisting that their illegitimate presence in the United States is not a big deal is as silly as to respond to the abuses of a tax cheat by declaring that he is an American citizen: Narrowly correct, but beside the material point.

In yesterday’s New York Times, Eli Saslow provided us with a harrowing illustration of this problem. Saslow’s story features an American named Dan Kluver, who was repeatedly harassed by both federal and state officials because an illegal immigrant from Guatemala had stolen his identity. That illegal immigrant’s name was Romeo Pérez-Bravo, but he had adopted so many others over the years that, by the time he was discovered, they had “started to blur together.” As Dan Kluver, Pérez-Bravo had incurred debts, earned wages, racked up traffic violations, and even killed a guy — all of which, naturally, were traced to his victim rather than himself. That, in every part of this country, is a serious crime whether one is a citizen, an illegal immigrant, or anything else in between. If I had done it, I, too, would have been charged.

But, of course, I have not done what Romeo Pérez-Bravo did, because I am not an illegal immigrant. Certainly, there are some exceptions to the rule, but, as a general matter, it is safe to assume that very few legal residents will choose either to engage in identity fraud or to bypass the social contract completely, whereas, because they effectively have to, almost every illegal immigrant is driven to take one of those paths. For various reasons — including the majority’s preference for a set of labor laws, public services, and welfare-and-retirement programs that are inconsistent with unfiltered immigration — Americans want their national government to possess and enforce an immigration policy. When it does not, they profoundly dislike the consequences. This, and not some pedantic commitment to policing “civil infractions,” is why it is important that our elected officials keep our borders supervised. For better or for worse, contemporary life in the United States revolves around Social Security numbers, driver’s licenses, credit scores, and other tracking systems that, if they are to work, must be closely overseen. That a given person might not like that setup is neither here nor there; if, absent abolition or reform, it is allowed to atrophy, the results will be catastrophic.

How catastrophic? As the New York Times notes, “as many as one million undocumented workers are using fraudulent or stolen Social Security numbers” — numbers that “are skimmed from data breaches, sold in black markets online for as little as $150 or handed out in border towns by human smugglers.” This, per the paper’s report, is what happened to just one of them:

Some years the other Dan Kluver had earned more than his own salary at a local sugar beet factory, which pushed the total income under his Social Security number into a higher tax bracket as the debt started to mount. Twice, he’d contacted law enforcement and filed an identity theft report with the federal government, where it landed in a pile along with tens of thousands of similar reports filed each year. He waited for relief while the I.R.S. docked his annual tax returns and garnished a few of his paychecks, costing him thousands. Finally, a few months before their wedding in 2012, Kristy decided to pay off the balance, emptying her savings and sending in a check for $6,000. Their relief lasted until the next tax season, when a new bill arrived — this one for $22,000.

As one might expect, this took a toll on his personal life:

They spent the next decade living with the consequences — annual tax audits, budgets that never added up, whispered arguments after the kids went to bed. Kluver kept calling government numbers and waiting on hold until he eventually resigned himself to a payment plan. He agreed to send the I.R.S. $150 each month, which he’d done more than 35 times. “I can’t keep obsessing over this and getting nowhere,” he told Kristy. “I need to think about something else.”

If I may put it poetically, this is a full-frontal approach to Dan Kluver’s American Dream. In recent years, that phrase has been primarily used to describe the aspirations of immigrants such as myself, but, properly understood, it ought to apply no less rigorously to those who were born here. Eventually, Dan Kluver decided to “think about something else” — but that was not a victory, it was a resignation, an abdication, a surrender. Because of what Romeo Pérez-Bravo did, Dan Kluver was obliged to conclude that the promises of this country were no longer available to him. And who could blame him? It is stressful enough to have the IRS harassing you, but to have your tax returns rejected and your pay packets garnished and your savings demanded ad nauseam — on the basis of money you never earned or got to enjoy! — is intolerable. In such a situation, one cannot plan, or save, or make much sense of the world.

The Times’ headline is “Two Men. One Identity. They Both Paid the Price.” This is preposterous. If the attached story were about two taxpayers who, by dint of an innocent mistake at the Treasury, had been allocated the same Social Security number, that description might make sense. But it was not. It was about a man who broke the rules of entry, who broke the rules of the society in which he was trespassing, and who tried to get away with both crimes by riding on the back of an innocent man. That man, Romeo Pérez-Bravo, belongs in prison. His scapegoat, Dan Kluver, deserves an apology, restitution, and a vow from his representatives that they will do better in the future.

America, land of opportunity doesn’t just apply to the honest, it gives illegal immigrants a path to criminal careers that democrats advocate and sponsor. Until dems lose this stronghold over the nation and removed from power, it will continue. Homegrown criminals now have to compete with millions of undocumented scum and honest hard working Americans have even more opportunity to be taken. Let’s face it, we are out numbered by the hands of our own government.

Our government is knowingly involved with the raping of our citizens by these illegal criminals. Welfare fraud, SSI fraud, SNAP fraud, and all the programs for our countrymen are being assaulted, yet the government doesn’t root out all this criminal activity. Because they want to get these people on the voter rolls.

EVERY ILLEGAL, regardless of age or how long they have been here, should be rounded up and deported IMMEDIATELY , IF NOT SOONER.

AND THAT GOES FOR ANY DIRTBAG LOSER AIDING THEM, DEFENDING THEM, OR HARBOURING THEM IN ANY WAY.

A typical democrat scenario. The criminal is a victim and the victim a criminal. Mr Kluver deserves an apology, restitutions for all the money that was stolen from him and restitution for pain and suffering and the destruction of this man’s identity. The Fake Kluver was not suffering he benefitted from the crime he committed. He deserves no pity nor support. He should be convicted and put in jail and pay back all he stole from Mr Kluver. Who will never feel safe again in this country. Not only did the democrats let him down they were complicit by allowing this to go on and then after this was finally exposed they made the Fake Mr Kluver also a victim. That is the democrat mindset. Criminals need to be protected. Victims not at all, especially if they are citizens. We live in hell right now because there are many more Mr. Kluvers who will never be heard. The whistleblowers anti deportation crowd will see to it.

My son, 19 married, having a child, and one on the way, was working two jobs, and one had a cut back, affecting him. One job, technically 4 mouths to feed … he went looking for food stamps. He was declined, as he made too much money … working full time in Phoenix (where he lived) full time in Texas, and part time in Florida.

Being southern states, it was likely illegal immigrants had taken his SS, using it to get jobs, in Texas and Florida … meaning he couldn’t get food stamps to feed his family. He complained, wondering how he could have a full time job in Az, Texas, and a part time job in Florida … no one cared.

This is way past the “get tough” stage, and all illegal persons should be shipped out of the USA back to their original countries with personal info made available to totally stop any re-offending by coming back in to this USA. It makes me wonder how can it happen in the first place? Why are our laws of entry not being enforced? Enough of this crap!!!! stop NOW!

It should have been obvious to the IRS that a stolen identity was involved, and the IRS should have taken action to clear it up. Unfortunately, we have a case, as so often occurs, of bureaucrats abusing the citizenry. Until the government starts firing these abusive bureaucrats, these problems will continue.

I, sadly, have also been taken advantage of by an illegal alien. It only cost me $500, but it hurt just the same. Why, with all of this evidence do people keep voting for Dems? Are we outnumbered by U.S. citizens who want to destroy this country? There is an election coming up in Tennessee. Are Republicans who decide to “sit this one out” going to give another House seat away? If all conservative voters would speak up and vote with one voice, we can win. Please, fellow Americans get involved and vote.

The whole idea of the DIMMs is to flood the system and make it too difficult to tell the illegals from the citizens. It’s just ANOTHER despicable DIMM action; one among many! They will do ANYTHING to seize and maintain power.

There are powerful people actively trying to bring our downfall.

Members of Congress advocating sedition against our President.

Yet we sit like ducks…We have online forums where we are allowed to quack our brains out. And the demonrats even want to take that away – unless you’re quacking for them to import more criminals… Hate speech = Any conservative breathing air.

I made this point last week at our local county commission meeting. SEE ATTDBernalillo County Commission

11/18/25

RE: Proposed Ordinance 2025
Bernalillo Co. Commissioners and managers Thank you for this opportunity
to address you regarding Sanctuary City status.      .

Proposed Ordinance 2025 is Miss-named. A better name would be “CONTINUED CHAOS”. as it will NOT enhance safety in community spaces but make it worse.  Bernalillo Co is plagued with crime and desperately needs Federal help combating transnational gangs who prey on immigrants as well as citizens in general.

Looking at the many problems NM faces there are a few issues that are Multipliers. That is they make all the other issues worse. Sanctuary Status makes it harder to provide public education, health & safety services, reduce crime and unemployment. In doing so BernCo is writing a check on the taxpayer that we did not vote for and that we cannot pay.

We taxpayers reject the unreasonable burdens of sanctuary status.

The people it pretends to protect actually become unwitting political pawns to be victimized by gangs and narcoterrorists, often forced into lives of desperate crime.

Do Laws matter? Are we a nation of Laws or chaos. All of New Mexico’s statistics indicate that we are living in a fantasy bubble of chaos created by proposals such as this one.  Surely we can do better than this.

So I ask you; can this commission wake up from the nightmare and muster enough courage to make the Hard decisions. Real solutions not Band-Aids. Given the opportunity – I Vote NO on Ordinance 2025.

And this is the culminating problem of flooding a country with illegal immigrants who are boarderline experts at theft, especially through computer technology. NOW, just imagine if this same situation that Dan Kluver went through for YEARS due to an illegal hacking his Social Security Numer through a data breach at the bank or the insurance company or his health coverage plan, etc. happened to a Democratic Member of Congress or Senate or Judicial Branch. What difference do you think the end results would be? Certainly, I would say the IRS would be quickly halted from constant pressure to get money from them AND, they would make a point to appoint someone to follow up this CRIME at the governments expense.
The flood gates have been opened to allow people who are not citizens of our country to not only be given things most people can’t even get here when they are citizens and are suddenly out of work. They will get two hundred dollars every two week from unemployment IF they can stand the hoops they must jump through to prove they are looking for work. Then they have a waiting period before their first check comes in. Two hundred dollars equates to hoping they can purchase one weeks groceries for the family. BUT, the Biden Administration has stolen money from Social Security and other schemes that were put in place to house these aliens, give them jobs, EBT money taken from people who already were disabled and on EBT but haven’t had a check in over a year!! Then we find fraud now in the EBT department where employees were stealing from the funds, and we see that Biden was quick to make illegals have credentials to allow them to VOTE in this country but of course to vote for Socialist Democratic party members. As we recently witnessed the midterm vote in New York City, and look at who the new mayor is bringing into his allegiance now….more vicious Muslim protestors who are going to demand this and that and more because they are ALLOWED TO VOTE. The truth is we will see all of this every single day until we stop the Democratic Party from helping people come into this country and steal from EVERYONE. That goes for Churches and all left-leaning groups who think we, AS AMERICANS MUST WELCOME THE CRIMINALS IN THE NAME OF BROTHERHOOD! OMG get a grip.

It is time to stop all corruption and crime, judges and attorneys need to answer for making excuses to get criminals off so they can do more crimes!! Put an end to crime, execute these murders and child molester as soon as they are found guilty!! They do not deserve an appeal, this is something these attorneys came up with to make more money!! Teach people right from wrong and hold them accountable and responsible, stop their stupid excuses!!

Many reasons why these people from other countries want to come here. It may be that we have to raise the stakes a lot higher to come here and raise the penalties for coming illegally. I, for one, have become quite irritated when I am out and about to see all of these foreign faces in groups, thinking that they are here to receive the benefits of US citizens. Buden and Harris did the unthinkable invasion right on our borders with NO remorse.

Since we now must function financially in a software (vaporware) virtual reality.
Our overlords have abdicated all responsibility to insure it functions securely.
Have you noticed how you’re now being implored to pay extra for mortgage security, and banking security and and and….

i.e. Say you’re opening a new account at “!st National Fleece” and while speaking with the account mgr regarding monthly fees, they kindly explain that in addition to the regular fees they recommend you pay a nominal fee of X more to secure your account againt “ether” theft.

You ask “I thought that you as a bank were supposed to be all about security?”
The banker: We can make more money if we do our job poorly as a baseline.

We are however, willing to actually do our job as we’re supposed to…If you pay us more.
Sweet! You: And people actually go for this? Banker: They have no choice id they don’t want to end up like ol’ Ed Kluver.

Great article, except for one thing in very first paragraph:
Crossing our borders illegally IS NOT merely a ‘civil’ infraction; IT IS A CRIME. Look it up. Entering (or attempting to enter) illegally the first time is a CRIMINAL MISDEMEANOR subject to fines & jail time. RE-entering (or attempting to RE-enter after being previously deported/removed IS A FELONY. Demoncrats & these corrupt NGOs are lying when they say differently because they figure you don’t know any better. The only ‘civil’ infraction is (stupidly) if they entered ‘legally’ on a visa & it expired.

“Two Men. One Identity. They Both Paid the Price.”? Typical article to be published by that propaganda rag. Obviously only one person paid any price and that was Dan Kluver. But the Tmes, being the totally left wing rag that it is, somehow just had to treat the illegal criminal as a victim. Most of the articles, if you want to call them that, could have, and maybe many actually were, creations made by members of the Screen Actors Guild.

When you cross the border illegally, you are an ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT, PERIOD!! Most illegal immigrants know they are breaking the law, so it is pretty easy for them to rationally feel it is OK to break subsequent laws. Drug use, petty crime almost escalates to more serious offenses. Pretty soon you become a habitual offender. This is what we have in this situation. Many Americans feel sympathy for these illegals because they come here poor, pregnant and uneducated. But they soon become educated on how to game the system because we have so many NGO’s and crying liberals to show them the way. They are bleeding our social services DRY and the needed help to qualifying Americans is not available. Let ICE do their job, don’t hinder them. If we don’t get this issue under control, there will be no America for the next generation. We are a nation of laws and when you break them, there are consequences.

The IRS is fully aware that the illegal alien is using someone else’s SS #, and does nothing. When income is shown for two people, especially in the time of computers, which has been for decades, it’s very easy to spot the culprit. Yet they do nothing to protect the LEGAL citizen. Further, ILLEGALS can then file a tax return, claim a dozen dependents, and gain huge tax returns that AMERICAN CITIZENS pay for! It’s a rotten system!!

It is not beyond any reasonable expectation of a logical application of REAL JUSTICE, to expect, even DEMAND that any elected government official who is found to have facilitated this sort of atrocity against the U.S. citizens he or she is supposed to represent, be charged as an accomplice in every crime committed by an ILLEGAL ALIEN which directly harms the people of that legislator’s state and district, The failure to aid in the enforcement of U.S. immigration law and/or advocating-for the intentional non-enforcement of those laws is primafacia evidence of a criminal act.

Stop pandering to the leftist take over of language.
They are criminals the minute they cross the border. They are in no way immigrants. They are aliens from a different country and have broken the law, hence Illegal!

What preventions are in place that a social security number with an “active” citizen who has been paying in the system with that number, paying taxes with that number and probably owning that number for as many years as he or she is alive? Seems like there are NO failsafe systems in place. We know every other week there is a data breach somewhere that stores social security numbers in the tens of thousands. Hospitals, doctors, universities, large corporations, etc. How is it possible that the valid owner of this particular social security number made SEVERAL reports to the IRS and the government that his identity had been stolen and there were “too many other reports of stolen identification” to investigate Dan Kluver’s claim? If illegal aliens can figure out this system is so weak and unprotected, what about employees of the same system? Are those thousands of employees all truly honest or have they seen enough to make their own duplicate requests for money from the US with social security numbers of dead people, sick people, and others? You are only supposed to have ONE social security number all your life so how is that this criminal was able to live under Kluver’s social security number and it didn’t trigger any red flags anywhere? We should all be shaking in our boots if the fact is that all of the above are happening and no one cares!
