Although the legal and clinical definitions may differ, popular conception defines “insanity” as repeating the same behavior and expecting different results.
By that definition, leftist voters in New York City, California, and elsewhere recertified themselves as insane last week.
Year after year, election after election, voters in “blue” cities and states follow the same recipe that has brought self-imposed economic and demographic decay for decades: bigger government, higher taxes, more regulation, unsustainable benefits, and sprawling public-sector obligations. They keep repeating their behavior, even as jobs evaporate, families leave, and businesses take investment elsewhere.
Decades of left-leaning politicians and public policies in those locales have steadily driven the cost of living upward, saddled employers with higher taxes and labor costs, and made relocation the rational option for millions of residents and enterprises. In obvious contrast, “red” states like Florida, Texas, and Tennessee practice more conservative governance via lower taxes, less regulation, business-friendly climates, and more modest public-sector footprints.
Those aren’t abstract principles. Voters’ choices determine population shifts, Congressional reapportionment, cost of living variations, and economic growth.
Start with the most vivid manifestation, population. After the 2020 census, California lost a Congressional seat for the first time in its history – an irrefutable sign even to someone as shameless as Governor Gavin Newsom that growth and optimism in California had plummeted relative to competitor “red” states like Texas and Florida, whose populations surged and whose Congressional seats increased. As the Census Bureau map shows, higher-tax, higher-regulation states like California and New York suffered outmigration and loss of Congressional power, while lower-tax and deregulatory states enjoyed net inmigration and increased Congressional representation.
Economic data parallels that population dynamic, as dollars and jobs follow people.
For example, the federal Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) shows unambiguously that while economic growth at the state level can obviously vary year-to-year, the highest levels of long-term growth in recent years have clustered in more conservative states that enact more growth-friendly tax and regulatory environments. Employers and businesses relocating headquarters and centers of operation routinely cite regulatory burdens, business costs, and talent availability as the reasons for their moves.
Those reasons flow from public policies deliberately pursued by their citizens and elected leaders. Simply put, pro-growth laws and regulations attract investment, while punitive tax and regulatory policies repel it.
On that note, remember when California was the “Golden State,” and everyone wanted to move there? It was the stuff of Beach Boys paeans and Randy Newman’s “I Love LA.”
Today, California offers a cautionary tale, not an idyllic destination.
So why do voters in places like California and New York keep voting for the same policies and sorts of leaders that have steadily produced these results for decades?
In large part, it’s cultural identity, a virtue-signaling equivalent of flashing a gang sign. It reflects a misguided faith that more government and spending will magically correct their declining states and somehow bring renewed prosperity. The hard metrics, however, push right back. Congressional apportionment, net migration tallies, economic growth trends, and affordability remain stubbornly clear. Vote for the same leaders and policies, and the same outcomes will follow. Or worse.
None of this constitutes mere moralizing about red state virtue or blue state vice. It’s a straightforward, practical illustration of results from deliberate policy choices. When a state’s voters on tax policy, regulatory posture, labor mandates, and other matters make it increasingly costly to live and conduct business, markets will respond. Families, entrepreneurs, and capital don’t tend to base their decisions on moralistic slogans and virtue-signaling; they base them on simple math.
Voters in states like California and New York nevertheless keep doing the same things and getting the same results.
Voters in every jurisdiction possess a choice over whether to embrace more responsible, pro-growth policies and leaders, or to continue a cycle of higher costs, lower competitiveness, and shrinking opportunity. Whether or not voters in places like California and New York correct course, at least they provide a helpful warning to the rest of the country, and an illustration of the perils of voluntary insanity.

Here in the not so golden state, the left has always been good at deflection when their policies rear their ugly truth. The crumbling infrastructure is more of a reveal than just businesses leaving, plus the lure of government provided everything, paid for by the ones stuck here will eventually consume every bit of personal income. Elections have no integrity, democrat laws help no one actually paying for those magnanimous benefits. Impoverished citizens and illegals having free health care better than it’s legal citizens plus their shopping carts that are full to overflow is criminal, meanwhile we debate what we can do without. Is it any wonder that dems remain in power?
New York State is not a crazy Democrat state because conservative/REpublican upstate voters are always overwhelmed by the sheer number of Blue voters in the 8M person Democrat NYC. I have friends who always say they may as well not vote because their vote is always countermanded by the city’s Democrats. I have a feeling that CA is much the same re: both LA and SF and SD voters. Both states are so gerrymandered in favor of Democrats, I do not know know this will ever be fair or reflect what the voters really want.
There’s little doubt that doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is the best definition of Insanity. But I would really like to know how many of the voters in NYC, were Illegal Aliens? NYC had previously said that they were going to let non citizens vote. SCOTUS ruled that they could not do it. But does anyone really believe that NYC actually obeyed that ruling? I for one don’t believe it for one second.
Democrats are no longer a political party. They’re a mental disorder.
Does insanity really explain their election results? Or was there massive election fraud — again?
Those of us who vote against the status quo government and individuals who “run” California, prefer to NOT be lumped in the category of “…voters in places like California and New York keep voting for the same policies and sorts of leaders that have steadily produced these results for decades?” because we don’t vote that way.
I know you’re making a point, but it’s very discouraging to be lumped in with those who are ruining and running California into the ground. We’re no superheroes, but we do vote responsibly, very aware of what our single vote means.
Please be kind to us. Some of us cannot move and are stuck here. (I can’t tolerate the weather anywhere else as my body cannot tolerate heat, cold, or humidity. Yeah, you can call me “Goldlilocks.”)
NOT all voters some voted Red in last elections for Recall that never worked then
CA does have Red spots in the State
There is danger to the growth of socialism/sharia law in California and New York.
Another factor in this equation is that the liberal voters of the city of New York out number the larger geography of conservative “outstate” New York.
What the rest of the country doesn’t seem to understand about California, is that we DO vote to get rid of Newsom and his crazy, dictator policies. However, we know without a shadow of a doubt that there is heavy cheating going on. Even when we “win” a vote; for instance, we voted for tougher penalties for criminals, Newsom ignores the vote of the people and spent the money he claimed he didn’t have to support the proposition, on his jerrymandering. We do fight his evil plans, but they change the votes or ignore the popular vote. I’d love to leave, but, I can’t afford too and I’m a disabled senior citizen. We need to be rescued by America. Send in the military to take over here in Commiefornia!!
California is not attempting to place a one time (yeah sure) 5% tax on billionaires assets to replace the loss of federal funding to healthcare. Like all government proposals, it will not be one time. It will become permanent and trickle down to everyone except the illegal aliens who will be the beneficiaries of the healthcare and other government programs. That is insanity and do the politicians care. I doubt it they will most likely protect themselves from the tax burden.
The truth behind CA and NY voting democrat is easy. Democrats create government jobs that are rewarded by many cushy jobs the electorate scoops up. It is an endless cycle of ever increasing, useless bureaucratic jobs requiring more and more taxes to support.
Not ALL New York voters are disinclined to employ reason when voting. Sadly, we are often subject to the whims of large cities like New York City, Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, etc. They are so blue, they make the the rest of us feel blue. I cannot tell you how many of us would love to cut those cities, especially NYC, loose. Perhaps then common sense choices would more readily prevail for the more intelligent voters in the state of New York.
I am in no hurry to have these degenerates move to my state. They moved to Arizona and Colorado, and shortly thereafter those two states were running down the road as fast as possible to become KKKalifornia Lite. No, Thank Yew!
Don’t lump all voters in NYS as part of the Koolaid crowd of believers in everything the Democrats present. The problem is that most of us who don’t like the progressive tendencies or the special treatment of the elitists don’t have spare money invested in big PAC funds like those who supported Mandami or the Wall street elitists behind Cuomo. Remember we are called the deplorables by Hillary standards and we don’t deserve anything but scraps from the table while the almighty elitists decide the next step as long as their little world f activity s left undercover and ignored.
Just like the citizens of NYC voting for a socialist despite the warnings from the right, California’s residents are still voting in the left! They are blinded for some reason to stay the Democrat way. They are destined to never improve their quality of life and to wallow in the highest prices FOR EVERYTHING
Stockholm Syndrome!
I’m from So Cal and 90%+ of the people I know are conservative. I don’t understand how the left is honestly winning elections in cali, the numbers don’t make sense.
The Left personify the definition of insanity?
Though that statement is factually true, it assumes the left actually have brains that have gone totally insane.
The radical liberals get by with all kinds of cheating to win elections. Look at the federal judges who are trying to stop the GOP in several states from being able to revamp their districts to show the REAL composition of the voters. Another way they cheat. It is not always at the polls or via mail-in ballots. Intimidation is another favorite of theirs to make people vote for them and don’t forget their lying backed up by 95% of the media! The radicals do their best to destroy anyone who wants to “defect” from their insane policies. Radical liberals are insane and evil.
Maybe it is NOT the Voters, but Who is in control of the Voting machines that perpetuates this phenomenon! These are Democratic states. It’s been shown many times that is how they control Elections & stay in power. Wake up People and restructure who is in control of your Voting Process! We had a similar problem when using voting machines. Then we went back to hand marked paper ballots! It made a Huge difference in our Election Results! Give it a Try!
I call BS on this article! The big factor that was not mentioned is the rampant cheating in elections in the Blue states. Once we get rid of mass mail in voting and voter ID required things will change. Until then … good luck.
Woke people don’t debate, they spew.
Want to talk insane? How about all the RINO’s of the Lindsay Graham sort insisting that the election of a sure to fail MAYOR of an already rapidly dying mega city spells the end of life as we know it while their constituents ponder whether they have enough credit on one of their cards to buy food for their families this week?
If Mamdani and his ideas are sure to fail and if one can believe everything said about those ideas then they surely will fail then so be it. The voters chose the guy, let them live with the consequences just as everyone is now dealing with the consequences of an out of control President that seems dead set on not following through on a single campaign promise. A peculiar man that, if someone were to spend 10 minutes using some solvent, a scrub brush, a power washer and some hair person skilled enough to remove the creature from his head, we could all see just an elderly man suffering from much of the same issues his direct predecessor suffered from who has found that being a multiple bankruptcy filing real estate grifter in no way qualifies one to lead a nation.
So keep uselessly concentrating on how badly Mamdani will do and never, ever talk about how regular people can’t afford food, rent, mortgage payments, car payments, stupid college loans taken out mostly for partying purposes. OH and also while everyone is pondering how badly this lowly Mayor will do……..lets start another war with a fresh set of “beaners” in South America……’cause thats the American Way,
