Aging has a lot of benefits. People grow more mature and wiser, and typically feel more self-confident. Unfortunately, aging may not be so gentle on the skin. However, we are not helpless. Enjoy reading how to help aging skin!

Maintaining youthfulness

Ever look at some older people and wonder why their skin looks so amazing? While genetics may play a role, often – it’s what they are doing (and not doing) that makes them look amazing!

You can look great, too!

As we grow older, so does our skin. And it’s up to us to take hold of protecting it – to keep it youthful, healthy, and free of age spots and wrinkles. WebMD, a leading source of reliable medical information, highlights the effects of life on skin, and ways to keep this largest organ of the human body looking and feeling great!

Let’s read some tips:

  • Watch your diet – What we eat affects the appearance of the skin. A healthy diet of foods rich in antioxidants is helpful in protecting the skin. This includes fish, fruits, and vegetables. Higher intakes of vitamins, such as Vitamin C, and eating less carbs and fats, can also contribute to increased youthfulness of skin.
  • Exercise – Moving the body helps to improve circulation, which in turn nourishes the skin. WebMD explains that better blood flow brings more oxygen and nutrients and may help skin produce collagen to stave off wrinkles.
  • Get adequate sleep – Beauty rest is a real thing! Getting about 8 hours of sleep per night can help keep your skin healthy. Not only can it get rid of dark circles under the eyes, but it can add a healthful glow to the skin and prevent the eyes from puffing. Sleeping on one’s back is optimal to prevent the skin from pressing on the pillow and becoming creased over time.
  • Watch sun exposure – WebMD shares that about 90% of all skin damage is due to the sun. And sun exposure without protection can lead to increased risk of skin cancer. So, it’s best to talk to your doctor about protecting your skin. Generally, a broad-spectrum sunblock is helpful in the prevention of aging skin and issues related to sun exposure.
  • Employ good practices – Avoiding or cutting back on unhealthy practices like smoking, drinking alcohol, eating junk food, and ignoring skin care, as examples, can help prevent irritated skin. For example, it’s always important to wash your face before bedtime. This removes dirt, makeup, dead skin cells, sunscreen, bacteria, and other things that can build up on the skin during the day.

Taking control

Aging is a great thing but with it comes responsibilities, among them taking care of our health and skin. Tending to this largest organ of the human body is important to do daily, especially to ward off skin damage and prevent premature signs of aging. By watching the diet, exercising, getting adequate sleep, protecting ourselves from sun exposure, and incorporating healthy lifestyle practices, we can do our bodies a huge favor by seizing control of our skin and overall health and wellbeing.
