Efforts to cover up or deflect attention from the U.S.-Mexico border crisis have failed, as nightly visual evidence of the chaos, suffering, and despair of this crisis can be seen on TV by millions of Americans across the nation. An article from Imprimis, a monthly publication of Hillsdale College in Michigan, recently authoritatively outlined the details of this crisis. Over the years, Hillsdale College has become one of the nation’s finest institutions of higher learning, especially so when many “big name” colleges and universities have become, particularly in their undergraduate programs, overrun by “politically correct” and “radical woke” values. Hillsdale takes no federal subsidies and is free to offer its students an outstanding education with a top teaching faculty in a distinguished conservative tradition. In addition to its faculty, Hillsdale hosts regular in-person presentations by America’s leading philosophers, journalists, and current and past public officials. Imprimis regularly publishes condensed or adapted versions of these speeches. In July of this year, Mark Morgan spoke at Hillsdale in a talk entitled, “On the Disaster at Our Southern Border.” The talk was adapted for a recent Imprimis article, which is free to all readers. (Probably many AMAC members already subscribe.) What makes Morgan’s article so authoritative are his credentials. He was chief of U.S. Border Patrol during the Obama administration, Acting Commissioner of U.S. Customs and border Protection, and Acting Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during the Trump administration. A Marine veteran, former officer in the LAPD, with 20 years of service in the FBI, including a stint as Assistant Director of the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, he was also deputy on-scene commander in Baghdad, Iraq. He also has a J.D. from the University of Missouri. Here are some of his main points from that talk. Morgan stated that he believes that the Biden administration has “methodically” and “intentionally” created a disaster at the southern U.S. border by undoing the meaningful border security measures which had been put in place under prior administrations, including the effective shut-down of ICE, failing to prevent unlawful entries into the U.S., ending a successful border wall program and the Remain in Mexico program (thus returning to the old and failed “catch and release” policy), and suspending the Asylum Cooperative Agreements with Central American countries for genuine asylum seekers. (Wishing to improve one’s economic status is not legally grounds for seeking asylum). Morgan contends that the sudden and unacceptable surge of those attempting illegally to enter the U.S. at its southern border is a result of the Biden administration’s actions and policies, which amount to “open borders.” He says that the Biden administration’s claim that they are seeking to address the “root causes” of the immigrant surge is “bunk” — pointing out that the “real root cause” is the Biden catch-and-release open door incentive. Morgan held key border control positions in both the Obama and Trump administrations. He quotes Senator Barack Obama who said in 2005, “We simply cannot allow people to pour into the country undetected, undocumented, unchecked, and circumventing the line of people who are waiting patiently, diligently and lawfully to become immigrants in this country.” He also quotes Senator Chuck Schumer and Senator Joe Biden strongly condemning illegal immigration. Morgan and many others have also commented on the potential of criminal elements and unvaccinated health risks posed by those entering the U.S. under the Biden administration open borders policy. In fact, a barrage of voices, from political leaders to ordinary citizens, are exclaiming their alarm about the threat of the flood of undocumented immigrants invading the U.S. via its border with Mexico. Some Biden critics suggest that his and other Democrats’ motives for unlimited immigration is their ambition to add to their voter base. Most Biden advocates say they simply don’t believe in national borders. But the latter don’t seem to have a credible explanation for the problematic European experience recently with no-border immigration. Perhaps Morgan’s closing words are the best rejoinder to Mr. Biden and his fellow open border advocates: “A country that cannot control its borders is not a country, and I’m sad to say that we are facing that eventuality.” This crisis not going away any time soon. The Biden policies are very unpopular with voters, and could cost the Democrats dearly in next year’s elections.
