Editor’s note: After this article was published, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer reversed course on the funding bill. “Either proceed with the bill before us or risk Donald Trump throwing America into the chaos of a shutdown. This in my view is no choice at all. While the [House bill] is very bad, the potential for a shutdown has consequences for America that are much, much worse,” Schumer said, according to Politico.

The New York Democrat added, “I believe it is my job to make the best choice for the country, to minimize the harms to the American people. Therefore, I will vote to keep the government open and not shut it down.”

The Senate was set to vote Thursday on the House’s continuing resolution to fund the federal government through the end of the fiscal year, but Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has already called for Senate Democrats to oppose the bill as written, and instead proposed an amendment to fund the government only for 30 days.

Republican Senate leadership took aim at the Democrat senator from New York for leading the government to the brink of a fiscal crisis.

“In Senator Schumer’s last five months as majority leader, he didn’t bring a single fiscal year 2025 appropriations bill to the floor,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., told The Daily Signal.

For discretionary spending, Congress ordinarily passes 12 separate appropriations bills

“It’s time for the Democrat leader to acknowledge that it’s his decisions that put us here, and to urge his colleagues to accept the situation and vote to fund the government. If the Democrat leader has problems with the current situation, he should have funded the government when he was in charge,” Thune said.

If the Senate does not pass the continuing resolution today, then the government will enter a partial shutdown where nonessential services are paused, and nonessential staffers are furloughed. The shutdown will not affect services such as Social Security, which is separate, mandatory spending.

Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., told The Daily Signal that the minority leader would own the consequences of opposing the continuing funding.

“This is Schumer’s shutdown. The Democrats would rather let the government shut down than support much-needed priorities for hardworking Americans. This latest attempt to force Leader Thune’s hand is nothing more than a desperate attempt to save face,” the Montana senator said.

Sen. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., told The Daily Signal and other assembled reporters outside the Senate chamber that he would “be fine voting on their [the Democrats’] bill. I don’t know how the leadership feels about it.”

The North Dakota senator explained that it would be pointless to vote on the bill, however, because then it would have to be sent back to the House, and that would require House members to come back into session.

“It’s hard for me to see a world where Democrats would literally be the ones to prevent funding to the government,” Cramer said, noting that government funding comes more easily to the Democratic Party than the GOP.

Indeed, Democrat opposition to government funding is a reversal of the party’s usual preference for keeping federal spending and retaining federal personnel. Just this month, Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., joined federal workers in a protest outside the Office of Management and Budget. Other Democrat senators brought fired federal workers to the president’s address to a joint session of Congress on Feb. 4.

Went thru one of these “shutdowns” and was furloughed for a short amount of time. I had money saved and was ready for it. Didn’t impact me at all. AAMOF, operation still ran well, just a bit more “work” for those that were considered essential (I use that term loosely). And, got back pay for the days I was gone. Wasn’t right to keep the $$ since I didn’t work for it, so I donated it to a local charity.
I’ve since resigned from that position for 10yrs ago. After 5 yrs, couldn’t take the bureaucratic BS. Honestly, .gov could probably get rid of 50% of the dead weight roady civilians and not be affected at all. So much waste…..

Schumer has nearly always been part of the problem, and seldom (only by accident) part of the solution. Time for Schumer to resign and join Biden at the old folks’ home for the mentally deficient and impaired. He is an embarrassment to America, but then Libtards are notorious for voting and electing “Embarrassments” to Congress and other political offices at all levels.

Schmuck U SHyster is one of THE WORST politicians EVER in the US. He has spent 50 years screwing American citizens with his anti American stance, voting against US culture, laws, customs and way of life. This is what happens when we elect or appoint foreigners to important positions. Schmuck’s parets were from Estonia, I think, and got chased out by the Nazi’s. We should not have allowed them into our country due to his damahe to our country.

It wasn’t addressed in this article but with all we are hearing about behind the scenes maneuvering to get democrat governors to sign pre-drafted bills opposing ICE, blocking use of the State’s National Guard, preplanned Lawfare against every Trump proposal, when will DOJ get around to declaring these seditious activities to be an “Insurrection”?

Don’t we elect one government and the elected folks are required to work together to take care of the American People’s business? What is this shadow government the democrats are running? This seems like the same group that brought us Russiagate, the insurrection, Lawfare (against far to many republicans), rampant SWATING, and several attempts to kill President Trump? At what point have the democrat’s extra curricular activities crossed the line and become a criminal activity. From my standpoint it was a very long time ago. Will the FBI and DOJ ever be properly staffed and sufficiently organized to address these issues?

Let’s face it, there people are not at all serious about our government. How long has it been since they delivered the “Required” signed budget before the Oct 1 deadline? Where has their oversight been. Several of these inspector generals have identified fairly large areas where meaningful cuts could be made with little or no impact on government services delivered to the American people (did the Congress implement those changes?) why not?

The American people need better representation, serious people who are able to work together for the People. Can we all agree to be informed voters for the midterms in 2026?

“If the Senate does not pass the continuing resolution today, then the government will enter a partial shutdown where nonessential services are paused, and nonessential staffers are furloughed.”
If they are nonessential then they are probably unconstitutional and should be abolished anyway. I’d guess anywhere from 80 to 90 percent of what the federal government does is unconstitutional. Remember the 10th amendment forbids the federal government from doing anything not specifically assigned to the federal government by the constitution.
HUD, DOE, even FEMA, foreign aid, federal welfare, CDC, DEA, All these and many more are unconstitutional. If the federal government representatives want to continue them then they need to amend the constitution.

More politics, more dancing the dance (the old Potomac Two step) and more games being played to the dismay of our Republic. It would certainly be nice if all these idiots would get on the same page…..do what’s best for America! I don’t think any of them, dem. or repub. actually know what that means. I hate politics, especially the kind we now have in place.

In this case Schumer made the correct decision, politically speaking, but his party is too ill equipped to recognize that. Love that the democrats can’t tell if they’re coming or going. Keep it up, you’re making it easy for Trump and we appreciate it.

The Democrats have killed their party. Leadership??? They don’t have any! Schumer, Harris, Pelosi? Are you kidding? They are pathetic. Their only goal is to interfere with Trump .

Who was running Biden’s administration the last four years? It sure wasn’t Biden. The Democrats are deep in denial! I hope they continue their disaster!

Unfortunately for New Yorkers, Schumer has been entrenched as a NYS representative that does not represent the entire population of NYS, he serves the liberal special interests in NYC and the Southern Tier. He is an excellent example of the need for term limits. For too long he has served himself and special interests, the wealthy and been a party puppet. His days of doing anything for the average NY’er are far in the past. There is no genuine commitment in any stand or policy he supports. He needs to go.

Schumer said he did it for the country. Can we believe him? Stay wary. When he said he would vote against this bill he said he was not voting for Trump. Well did the asshole wake up? Only what the reason, for the country, or something more nefarious? All democrats, are they democrats? Are on Schumer’s case. For real or just take the pressure off the dems if Schumer had not voted this way. The ultra left dems are not democratic or humane they love to see the country fail under Trump. They don’t care if it hurts people. They will have their lies ready why all that happened. And what do we do, nothing. Why has Soros not been arrested for paying for these demonstrators against America and Israel. Why are these hooligans not charged with a crime. If they are foreigners be deported. America is still, I hope, a country of laws. Every Republican should call them out. Every Republican should write to their senators and congressman. To Schumer, Pelosi and Jeffries. They are the people destroying America on orders of Klaus Schwab and the billionaires of the WEF. All these so called dem politicians should be impeached for their concerted effort to create a coup
