AMAC Magazine Exclusive – By Shane Harris

When Charlie Kirk was killed on September 10, 2025, he had achieved more in his 31 years of life than many of us could hope to accomplish in multiple lifetimes. Even in death, he has continued to inspire a political awakening throughout the United States, uniting and steeling the resolve of the conservative movement to carry on the crusade of American renewal that he played a pivotal role in sparking.

Decades from now, those of us who came of age politically listening to Charlie and taking inspiration from his courage will tell our children and grandchildren about the shock and horror that we felt watching a bullet tear through him.

We will tell them about those moments of fervent prayer, asking God for a miracle.

We will tell them about the shock and disbelief at his passing.

We will tell them about the profound sadness and the deep, simmering anger that swept the country in the days and weeks that followed.

And, if we are to honor Charlie’s legacy, we will work every day so that we can tell future generations that his story does not end in death and defeat, but in hope for a better future.

The assassin’s bullet that was supposed to silence Charlie’s voice instead made it louder than ever. It ignited hundreds of thousands more voices to speak out for and defend the values that Charlie believed in. The funeral that more than 90,000 people attended and tens of millions more watched online was the birth of a new era in our politics and culture.

Charlie’s outsized impact stems from the fact that he was both a world-class communicator and organizer. Very rarely in politics—or any field, for that matter—does someone possess the skills and work ethic necessary to be a builder and a messenger.

At just 18 years old, Charlie founded Turning Point USA, which has now become one of the most important cultural institutions on the right. As Daily Wire founder Ben Shapiro recalls upon meeting Kirk shortly after he started Turning Point, “Charlie was eager, and he was aggressive, and he was whip-smart. His energy was almost exhausting. When he walked away, I turned to my friend Jeremy Boreing and said, ‘That kid is going to be the head of the Republican National Committee one day.’ I was wrong. Charlie became far more important than that.”

Indeed, in many ways, Turning Point became even more influential than the RNC or any other right-of-center cultural institution that existed before Charlie came along. He and Turning Point filled a need that most establishment conservatives didn’t even acknowledge existed—reaching out to young people and cultivating a love of country, reverence for traditional values, and revival of faith in America’s rising generations.

Before Turning Point, it was simply assumed that young people would always be liberal and then become more conservative as they aged. Charlie challenged that conventional wisdom head on, most famously through his appearances on college campuses. He pioneered the now popular strategy of challenging liberals to debate him in public, including at universities. He went into the proverbial lion’s den to be a light of truth, inviting activist-minded students, seasoned professors, and anyone with the courage to step up to a microphone to put their views to the test.

At 22, Charlie addressed the Republican National Convention, where he urged the party to pay attention to the needs of young voters. Three years later, he started Turning Point Action, which quickly became one of the most important grassroots and get-out-the-vote organizations on the right.

The impact of these efforts is not abstract or theoretical. In 2024, President Donald Trump won an astonishing 46 percent of voters under 30—up from 36 percent just four years prior. By many metrics, Gen Z is the most conservative generation at this point in their lives in American history.

This dramatic shift did not occur in a vacuum. It was a direct result of Turning Point’s consistent outreach and Charlie’s expert use of the internet and social media to repackage time-tested values for a new generation.

While he was almost single-handedly modernizing and redefining conservative activism, Charlie also found time to publish five books, marry the love of his life, Erika, and have two children. In a society where fewer young people are getting married, Charlie championed family life as the most important duty of all—a belief guided by his strong Christian faith. As commentator Michael Knowles noted, “Charlie loved his Savior. The zeal with which he debated politics paled in comparison to the excitement with which he discussed religion.”

Even in death, Charlie continued to lead people to God. As Erika Kirk said in her heart-wrenching remarks at Charlie’s funeral, following his passing, “we saw what my husband always prayed he would see in this country. We saw revival. We saw people open a Bible for the first time in a decade. We saw people pray for the first time since they were children. We saw people go to a church service for the first time in their entire lives.”

It’s not just young people whom Charlie inspired and cared about, either. Following his death, countless Americans of all ages took to social media to share what Charlie’s work meant to them. Charlie was also a great friend to AMAC, recognizing the importance of cross-generational cooperation for the future of the conservative movement. AMAC was the presenting sponsor of Turning Point’s The People’s Convention last year.

In recognition of that enduring legacy, President Trump posthumously awarded Charlie the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, for his patriotism, faith, and tireless advocacy for American ideals. Erika accepted the medal in a moving White House ceremony surrounded by family, friends, and many of the people Charlie had inspired.

In a proclamation, President Trump also designated October 14—what would have been Charlie’s thirty-second birthday—as a National Day of Remembrance in his honor.

“Every day, Charlie devoted himself to a set of simple causes: Defending the truth, encouraging debate, and spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” Trump wrote. “He was gracious and articulate beyond measure, always welcomed opposing perspectives, and never deviated from his noble goal of bridging our political, cultural, and philosophical divides.”

That sentiment captures the essence of who Charlie was. He represented the very best of America—its commitment to faith and family and a fearless resolve to defend free speech and open debate. He reminded us that our nation’s greatness does not come from government or institutions but from ordinary men and women who speak the truth boldly, live their values unapologetically, and refuse to be silenced.

Charlie’s passing left a void that can never be filled, but his light continues to shine through every person he inspired. The greatest tribute we can offer is to follow his example—to live courageously, to defend the truth without compromise, and to never be afraid to stand for what is right.

If each of us carries forward just a spark of Charlie’s conviction and faith, his mission will not only endure— it will grow stronger with each passing day.

At the advanced age of 70-something, I listened to Charlie almost every day…I learned so much from his exchanges with liberal students, and learned even more about what a true Christian is…I miss him.
