On April 25, another attempt was made on President Trump‘s life. A leftist stormed the White House Correspondents’ dinner and shot a Secret Service agent. Most watched in shock. Oddly, some Democrats are silent, normalizing the idea that political violence, even attempted assassinations, are somehow to be expected. This must stop.
History teaches – from ancient Rome to the violent 1960s, when we lost a president, attorney general, and civil rights leader – that a society can lose its compass, permit passions to justify ignoring republican values. That is dangerous.
Studies, including a recent one by the Brennan Center, suggest we are crossing an invisible line. If we are, it is a failure of political leadership, abdication of responsibility by top leaders. In a republic, leaders must deter political violence.
When people feel uneasy, leaders must focus, guide, speak, and act to restore confidence. If political violence is, by contrast, seen as acceptable, leaders are failing. They are not modeling peaceable behavior, setting the right expectations.
Unfortunately, that is where we find ourselves. Statistically, numbers tell us what we know – after three assassination attempts, the death of Charlie Kirk, and countless other violent political episodes.
In late 2025, even before the latest attempt on President Trump, the Brennan Center reported: “Following a series of high-profile assassinations and attacks on politicians from both parties, the tides of violence are rising once again in the United States.”
Unchecked by those who should be speaking out, advanced by the misguided notion that political violence has some place in society – and pushed by extremist ideologies – the political violence surge is becoming a contagion, even locally.
Last year, “an alarming rate of state legislators reported an increase in frequency of violence…About 40 percent of state legislators reported an increase in frequency of abuse — which includes insults, harassment, threats, and physical attacks — and nearly a third reported an increase in seriousness of the abuse.”
“State legislators from both parties shared harrowing experiences of violence… In Congress, the U.S. Capitol Police investigated over 8,000 threats in 2023, a 50 percent increase compared with 2018 … 10 times higher than in 2016.”
As we watched another attempt on President Trump’s life averted – and having worked for three presidents and been in the Capitol the day two Capitol police officers were gunned down in 1998, it hits close to home – this has to be stopped.
For certain, our entire culture is in distress – much of it pushed from within by radicals, well-funded Marxists, and adversaries who wish us no good – but our leaders can affect this. To blunt this slide toward anarchy, they must.
Instead of constant hostility pushed at President Trump by reckless Progressives who call themselves Democrats – and demonization of those who support him – responsible Democrat leaders should be boldly condemning political violence.
Bluntly, from Washington DC to Maine, the decision of Progressive Democrats to remain silent in the face of this abject evil, to vote against resolutions commending Charlie Kirk, to encourage protests that call for violence, is a disgrace. These political misfits, however justified or non-complicit they feel, are part of the problem. Political leadership is about dialing down violence, not dialing it up.

We all know that the Democrats will condemn violence,”on both sides” but never admit that it is their side that does 99% of it. They’ll never admit that they are to blame for their violent rhetoric. They’ll never admit they need to get rid of these people from their party. They’ll never admit that their party has been that way since the 1820s when it was formed. Unfortunately, the Democrats will probably shrug their shoulders and continue to rake President Trump over the coals until the midterms. After glancing at this article, I felt the need to interject a dash of hope. Fox News ran an article today of how a “top Democrat” (after the shooting incident at the banquet) came up to Trump and asked if he could give him a hug. Several others on the other side came up to affirm him as well. Trump, in his CBS interview said “there was love in the room” from all sides, which he repeated in various ways. He was unable to give his speech due to the shooting, but told the CBS host “if I had been able to speak, I would have had to say ‘I love you all'” I have been praying for unity between our leaders, and I would like to stand in faith that Saturday night was a beginning of that answer.
Spot-on article. Democrats spew violent rhetoric and demonize President Trump and conservatives, bearing no responsibility for their actions. It’s no surprise that individuals who follow the urging of liberal politicians become convinced that their violent actions won’t result in legal consequences. Colin Powell could have been President but his lovely wife Alma nixed it. She didn’t want to have to live into the “forever bubble” once one becomes President and walks into the White House. Read his biography. He would have been a great conservative President but I don’t blame him for electing to not running even though the Republican Party was holding open the nomination to him! Was able to retire and live a quiet life with his family as an elder statesman. I respect his choice but I think he would have been a “great one” as opposed to the recent demonratic presidents we’ve had lately. Not being able to live anonymously would be a real pain!

History tells us that most (not all) advanced societies reach their apex at about 250 years. Around that point in time, they begin to collapse and start a downward spiral which accelerates over time. At about year 300, they either completely implode and disappear or they become a shadow of their former self. It is Ironic that as we begin to celebrate our 250th year anniversary, we have reached the invisible line that starts the rapid decay. We might be able to restore our republic but it will take a concerted effort to overcome our difficulties. One approach is an Article V Convention of States to Amend our Constitution to correct some of the failures of the last 250 years. There were actually 5 attempts that we know of. The 3 you site and 2 additional. A former policeman was armed and attempting to infiltrate the security at the Ryders cup. There was also a man with a gas can at Mara Lago that was arrested on the lawn before making it to the buildings.
They are not speaking out because privately, they are disappointed the attempt was unsuccessful.
This third attempted killing of our president needs to wake up whomever is in charge of his safety. There is no way he should even be out at a huge event like this where literally anyone could walk into that hotel. The only place there were metal detectors was as you walked into the actual ball room. Also, secret service fired several shots at this animal and didn’t even hit him!!
