Corporation for Public Broadcasting Shutting Down after Losing Federal Funding

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) announced Friday that the taxpayer-funded organization will be shutting down by January 2026. This is after President Donald Trump signed a rescissions package into law, eliminating federal funding last month from CPB, which provides funding to PBS and NPR.

In a statement, CPB blamed the closure on the “federal rescissions package,” noting that the “release of the Senate Appropriations Committee’s FY 2026 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (Labor-H) appropriations bill excludes funding for CPB for the first time in more than five decades.” CPB will eliminate most staff positions by September 30, with a small transition team remaining until January 2026 that will work on closing operations.

Trump promised to eliminate federal funding from left-wing media corporations on the campaign trail last year. He specifically called out NPR for consistently negative coverage of Republicans.

“NO MORE FUNDING FOR NPR, A TOTAL SCAM! EDITOR SAID THEY HAVE NO REPUBLICANS, AND IS ONLY USED TO ‘DAMAGE TRUMP,’” the President said in a post on Truth Social last April. “THEY ARE A LIBERAL DISINFORMATION MACHINE. NOT ONE DOLLAR!!!”

Republican members of Congress celebrated the news. Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana explained that this is good news for Americans who no longer want their tax dollars to fund left-wing journalism.

“The Corporation for Public Broadcasting—the scheme bureaucrats used to funnel taxpayer money to NPR and PBS—will soon be no more,” Kennedy wrote in a post on X. “That’s great news for every American who doesn’t want their tax dollars funding left-wing opinion journalism EVER again.”

Ronny Jackson, who served as a White House physician during Trump’s first term and now serves as a member of the House from Texas, said that CPB’s closure is another example of Trump and Americans “winning.”

“The Corporation for Public Broadcasting is DEAD!” Jackson wrote on X. “They couldn’t survive without YOUR taxpayer money. Another useless, left-wing project is OVER. This is what happens when we put AMERICA FIRST. Not tired of WINNING!”

The federal government originally created CPB in 1967 when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Public Broadcasting Act into law in an effort to support taxpayer-funded entertainment and news as an alternative to content produced by private corporations. In recent years, networks that received federal funding through CPB notably aired controversial and politically biased programming.

Flagship PBS program Sesame Street, for instance has promoted LGBTQ ideology over the past few years. In 2020, the children’s show featured male actor Billy Porter wearing a dress. Sesame Street’s official X account then shared a post two months ago celebrating “Pride Month.”

As AMAC Newsline previously reported, NPR also has a history of biased reporting and news coverage. In the past few years, NPR published stories that stated the Declaration of Independence was a document with “flaws and deeply ingrained hypocrisies” and that promoted “queer animals” with the idea that “some deer are nonbinary.”

With CPB officially shutting down within the next few months, PBS and NPR must now rely on private revenue sources to remain operational.

Better late than never. When it became the propaganda machine for the left that was the time to shut it down or finance it from private left leaning sources, I guess when it comes to parting with the personal money they are not so enthusiastic about sharing.

It’s so indicative how these leftwing ngo’s simply cannot function without insider forced taxpayer subsidies.

Like the flood of illegals and terror state agents completely stopped at the borders: The leftist created government funding is drying up.

Not just the leftist mouthpieces are drying up, even their once paid protesters have mysteriously disappeared.

Did we ever get it right! I cannot see why this was ever funded in the first place. I say if you cannot compete as all others have had to do, then tax payors should not be on the hook for your broadcasting. I long ago gave up on PBS and NPR.

If they can’t make it on their own, then they should shut down or trim the fat including overpaid individuals working there. Taxpayers should not be their meal ticket, those who want it can increase their donations. IMO

I had often wondered if ratings were down and supposedly no one was viewing, how could these organizations exist? Take away taxpayers subsidies and that answers that. But exactly how did the left get away with it for so long? Simply put, no one was literally watching that either. Taxpayer funded protests were also in the mix, you know the ones with strategically bused in mobs and professionally made printed signs. For the left, it appears that toxic viewing cannot support itself on it’s own merit without some form of government aid which begs another question, who’s funding MSM if no one is watching them either?

CBP is closing down. Great. Now PBS and NPR. They both have been like the liberal universities and became political outlets for the lefties in this country. Disgusting what their shows for children contents consisted off. Never trusted PBS. And the last 20 years it has gotten worse and worse. I am afraid the billionaires in this country and abroad will manipulate the powers that be at PBS and NPR to air brainwashing material even worse as what has been shown till now. Which was disgusting enough. Will common sense in regard to our children ever return. I guess not. The dems fought against equality for the colored for years and they still are forgotten. Trans and Pride policies have priority. Teaching the Constitution or the history in the Middle East. Or about world war II. Maybe they wouldn’t throw the word Nazi and Hitler around so easily. Most of these people have no idea what Nazi means. They just follow these communist. Indoctrination outlets is what PBS and NPR are and if they should disappear the country would be the better for it. United we stand divided we fall.

Their addiction to left wing Democrat causes caused their own demise. Too bad because I enjoyed many of their non-political programs that have not been replicated on commercial TV.

The Democrats and all that follow and agenda and push their Pro-pagan-da, God has sent them a spirit of a strong delusion that they should believe a lie and be damned, since they voted God out of their platform at their DNC convention in 2012. God showed me that in 1828 when the Democrat Party was established, Satan chose the Democrat party to destroy America, because of our Judaeo/Christian beliefs that Satan hates.

I was contributor to NPR and public broadcasting until 2017 when the format changed to all propaganda news like the other news formats. Very little music was coming from that station. I’m a lover of classical music, but I could no longer support the left wing “so-called” news that was coming out of public broadcasting stations. To say it is tax payer fund it is a lie. Yes, taxpayers did help fund public broadcasting, but we all know that the lions share of the funds came from the federal government-which is of course, taxpayer funds. If that organization was doing its job and giving non-biased journalism, I would be upset about its closure. NPR Has always been a little left leaning but in the past has been thought-provoking and often covered topics that no one else would cover. Since the change in 2017 it’s just another arm of the left wing socialists. Made me sick to see what it had become.

I seem to remember a while back, when there used to be pledge drives for the network and stations. I even worked the phones for one, after suggesting to the management of the firm I worked for that it would be a “good work” that the company could get air time for. I guess they now believe their prime demographic isn’t going to come across for them in a pinch. Maybe they could change their plans if they consider raising their own funding. If they can’t or won’t they should flush twice before leaving.

If media outlets can’t survive on their own, they are not worthy of existing at all. Obviously, there is not enough interest in these Progressive media outlets to pay the bills. Having taxpayers forced to pay for propaganda is what Communist nations do. This is not acceptable in a free Republic such as the U.S.

This should never have gotten to the point that federal monies were even part of their funding! Any “non-profit” is obliged to operate on donations, not tax monies. The time has FINALLY come for these folks to stand on their own two feet. It’s sink or swim! I like some of what they offer, but the propaganda machine is overwhelming, so I don’t bother tuning in….nor do I contribute. PUBLIC broadcasting should be funded by their own means, not by sucking off the govt. teat. Good bye.

All they had to do is be Fair in their reporting or even better, eliminate all political content and Just simply provide entertaining shows. Really simple. But no, the Dems/Libs had to kill another good thing. Based on the actions of NPR and the Dems/Libs, a rational person with common sense and decency can only conclude their action were politically motivated and aimed at destroying our free society.

NPR was an enabler of radio propaganda for the Democrat fascist socialists with taxpayers’ money. I never paid taxes to support their National Propaganda Radio; now we don’t have to.
Why would they shut down? I was under the impression that they had enough monetary support for their millions of “friends”.

Our local classical music station, KBAQ, is currently asking for money from listeners. I’d like to contribute, but I suspect a healthy portion of anything I send them goes to left-wing causes. Is there any way to confirm that won’t happen?

Long overdue! They served a purpose early on until the government took over with CPB as means for political control. Good things really come from private enterprise that does respond to public desire. We all select style of music and news by changing channel. The LEFT captured and held “public” broadcasting thereby forcing all taxpayers to bend to their will. Good riddance!

Public Broadcasting must have very poor management if it didn’t plan for the loss of federal funding. That has been under siege for years, not just under Pres. Trump. PBS, especially, has constant fund raising events, several times a year, in fact, and it has also had somewhat disguised commercials for years that show corporate sponsorships, etc. so it hasn’t been entirely funded by taxes. Therefore, why didn’t mgmt build on that to keep them on air? Why just shut down? I am not a fan of either NPR or PBS due to their blatant partisanship (which their officers deny in vain), but a smart management team could keep them on air.

Such a shame to know that CBP had no Republicans working for this company. So now the truth has been exposed that if you’re a Republican you where never wanted and have been blamed for everything that’s wrong with America. I’m extremely happy a stand has been taken against CBP. SADLY ☹️ CBP was only in existence to make President Donald J Trump America’s best President ever look bad. How pitiful!.

Oh no… LOL. I won’t be able to listen to my favorite music without paying for it myself. What a shame. I love classical music but the local NPR played so much propaganda that I never listened to it myself. They already received a bunch of donations besides taxpayer dollars from left wing corporations (so they could get tax write offs?) maybe they can just go to a fully commercial mode and continue to pay the music I like. I’d rather listen to real commercials than the commie propaganda they spewed at my favorite listening time.
It’s to bad that whoever shot JFK didn’t shoot LBJ instead. NPR should have never been put on the air.

Times are a changing and NPR/PBS should never of been funded by taxpayers. Businesses come and go depending on consumers, business practices etc. I use to watch NPR/PBS but stopped over 10 years ago because of their hostility towards candidates etc. My concerns are illegals in our country and our national debt.
