The summer months and early autumn of the year before a national midterm election usually provide relatively few notable news items. Not all incumbents have decided or announced their intentions to run again or retire, and not all challengers have declared their candidacies. Behind the scenes, of course, there is much activity, as private polls are taken, funds are being raised, and strategies are being devised.
This political environment appeared to recur this year, as the new term of President Donald Trump was completing its first nine months. Notable over the summer had been the President’s relatively high approval rating after an historic number of executive orders and other actions by the Republican-controlled Congress in the winter and spring — which had astonishingly erased most of what the preceding Biden administration had put in place, as well as a number of reforms of many long-standing policies.
At the same time, Democrats seemed mired in their trauma from losing the 2024 election, and the party became increasingly divided between its liberal base and its urban activist radicals. These developments seemed to be fueling a political trend toward Republicans, as evidenced by recent large net GOP registration gains, a large fundraising advantage for the national Republican Party apparatus, and the movement of many traditional Democrats, including blacks, Hispanics, and union members, to the Republican side.
This seemingly relentless but quiet drift was continuing, but it was always going to face a key test in November 2026. The midterm elections would either confirm the trend or instead reverse it as a response to President Trump and the record of his administration.
All of this we thought we knew. But then the tragic murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk suddenly upended the quiet calm of the summer and perhaps also increased the velocity of the GOP’s momentum.
There is perhaps no exact measure of when a political trend becomes a full-throated political realignment. Only more time will reveal whether or not the Kirk murder was the catalyst of a realignment, but there can be little doubt of the impact of this event on politics even now.
I had previously written that the first midterm of a new administration had historically favored the opposition party because the voters of the party in power usually were no longer so highly motivated to vote as they had been in the previous presidential election, while opposition voters were usually more motivated.
But I also had written that the 2026 cycle might be different because of the emergence of radical neo-socialist mayoral candidates in at least two important off-year elections this November in New York City and Minneapolis. If one or both of them are elected this year, it could motivate more conservative and moderate voters to show up at the polls next year and thus work against the historical trend.
Prior to the tragic shooting in Utah, many liberals and even many older conservatives were largely unaware of Charlie Kirk. Young persons, especially young conservative men, however, had become very aware of him through his organization, Turning Point USA, which conducts conservative outreach to high school and college students.
Thanks to Turning Point’s successful use of social media and campus events, GOP political candidates, strategists, and activists had become aware of Kirk’s and Turning Point’s political impact as well. His effect on the 2024 election was very significant, as President Trump, Vice President Vance, and virtually all the leading figures in the Trump administration have proclaimed, both before his death and at his very public funeral held in Arizona. It is no doubt in large part thanks to Kirk that President Trump gained 10 points with young voters from 2020 to 2024.
If the figure of 16,000 requests for new Turning Point chapters is accurate, the short term social and political response to his murder is astonishing and enormous. The replacement of Charlie Kirk with his wife as CEO also promises a certain continuity and possible increased appeal to young women as well.
The question is whether or not the emotions and passion of the aftermath of Charlie Kirk’s death can endure into next year and beyond. If it does, the 2026 midterm elections could rather profoundly reverse the historical pattern.
A “Win This One For Charlie” sentiment next year could be very powerful. Or, as sometimes happens, public memory might fade, and without Charlie Kirk in charge, Turning Point could fail to make as much difference as it previously did. It will be up to those activists charged with carrying on his legacy to determine which outcome ultimately comes to pass.
A very important part of Charlie Kirk, Turning Point, and its future is not just political, but religious and social as well. That key aspect, so clearly evident in the elaborate funeral in Arizona, does seem likely to continue to grow as a form of revival, but that aspect can also be seen as something distinct from the purely political.
In any case, however, an extraordinary confluence of events the past few weeks and months seems to have caused the recent political trends to take a sharper turn toward a new voter realignment.
Next November, we will learn if this is what has actually happened.

Democrats are not to be trusted, a vote for ANY Democrat tells them you want to be lied too!
God Bless President Trum!
God Bless America!
The Democrat party is completely the party of losers. They do not stand for anything that is good for the country. They hate capitalism they hate this country with a passion the only thing they hate more is Donald Trump. They are willing to burn this nation to the ground just to destroy Donald Trump. All they do is preach death and violence. If Democrats would quit shooting people gun violence would go down 90%. I put an equal amount of blame on the media all they do is support everything the Democrat party tells them to. The Democrat party is going to go down in flames at the midterms and they’re not going to understand why. For starters all they do is pee on the average American without even the courtesy of calling it rain
And we need term limits to control both parties. God Bless Charlie Kirk and all of those in both parties looking to God and Jesus Christ for their guidance.
The Turning Point speakers at the memorial were exceptional and I believe they will keep Charlie’s visions going strong. Mrs. Kirk’s leadership, determination and dedication is vital in this mission. She will continue to do wonderful things for our country.
All the Dems have is lying. The fact that so many people believe their lies should alarm EVERYONE!!! Only a complete idiot would believe that the left is not ginning up violence with their hateful rhetoric. Republicans need to continue to govern with common sense and relying on making America healthy again, safe again and protecting the US on the world stage. Trump is doing all this through his amazing cabinet but the Deep State is working against the people every single day. Once the government shuts down I hope people see that the government can run without the extra 40% of employees hired by Biden. Conservative PACs need to start putting out ads showcasing the facts..the liberal lies versus the truth. Including which people are now saying the exact opposite of what they said to get elected. The TDS MUST be completely exposed so that the midterms will give the Republicans a complete majority and render ALL Dems lame duck.
The “Democratic Party” as such is long dead. It was eaten from the inside by Communists, Socialists, radicals and lunatics. The current organization wears the skin of the Democratic Party like Leatherface wearing the skin of his victims.
It calls itself Democratic party, I don’t think it did itself any good by choosing Obama, it instead of uniting it divided, polarized it and now we have factions so opposite it is chaotic, there is not one component gluing it together. Their ideas are wild, emotional maturity is none, they are like kids running high on sugar running wild every which way. That is good, show your true ability . Insane. Not even one voice of reason, but it probably would not survive. Now if only voter could see it, that they can’t organize themselves but think they can run a country, is this normal?
Poor old DJT. He looks like he isn’t having fun anymore. Iifiggered it’d take the Dumba$$ocrat$ a year and a half before he’d look like this. Huh. Well…. I know I will NEVER vote for another Dumba$$ocrat again. Ever.
Overall, most countries have been taking their turns, with some form of a civil unrest when talking becomes useless or violent.
Today, other leaders can see how we keep playing name games as a way of life.
Perhaps the immigrants wonder if they might be better off, if they did go home.
Years ago our hard working parents would have never allowed such a lifestyle within their town for one night, if you woke them up, or caused them to be late for their job!
They wouldn’t begin to listen to any excuse for it!
BECAUSE, that was how this unique, one country everybody is fighting to be in, America, was built!
It took 101% dedication! from the wives and mothers and grandparents and neighborhoods, schools and churches, soup kitchens, and a military force that sacrificed to protect it from being within OUR AMERICA.
The people of the land expected that same dedication from the leaders, maintaining that wisdom for America to be kept right on the line, expecting to protect their securities within their homes and families first, from their tax dollars.
We have their heritage from their dream come true today, within a country of travels, from sea to shining sea vacations, within the beauty of our God given America, and yet as people of the land it seems as though there is something unsettled always being argued over and President Trump is trying to keep our dedication of Making America Great and Safe Again everyday, with his AMERICA FIRST program.
It is our duty, with her birthday coming, to never give-up on keeping “OUR Ship of the AMERICA” safe, for OUR future generations to carry a new respect, onward, perhaps within the U S A Space Force, of “The Final Frontier!”
Will the people be willing to help them have them have that opportunity?
Democrats and especially left wingers seem determined to eat themselves from the inside out, so let them have at it. They prove their own ignorance every time they open their mouths (please take special note Hillary). They march in lockstep downward in their mine called insignificance chanting Kumbaya Myself (they can’s say Lord so they changed the song). They eventually come to the stone wall and can’t move forward, but only remain lost just singing and marching in place. They cannot and never will turn around and come back to reality, because that would be admitting they were completely wrong about everything. So cover the mine entrance and let them march, Move on without them.
I have a center-left voter acquaintance. We can talk politics and still be friendly. When I asked her how she felt about a laundry list of Trump policies, she said she agreed with them. Asked about Biden policies and she did NOT agree with them.
So I asked her, if you approve of the conservative policies and not the dem ones, why vote for the Socialist Democrat Party? She said she hates Trump. I said, put his personality aside, just looking at policy on both sides… answer again. She said, “I can’t, I hate who he is.” This is the mindset of many of them.
My hope is that the dems are blowing it bad enough that the centrists and left leaning come to our side.
The 6th turning in the final days of The Age of Grace is exciting to witness. The league of beazebub has nothing left in their bag of evil tricks to play.
Its going to be wonderfully satisfying to watch.
I couldn’t agree more with some of the comments below about not trusting Democrats. But still, a large majority of Conservatives (but not this lifelong Conservative) seem to trust a lifelong member of a Democrat Family Dynasty. . . Robert F. Kennedy Jr, more than President Trump.
Just because RFK Jr knows the RIGHT things to say at the RIGHT time, doesn’t mean he’s RIGHT – (the word “RIGHT” used here as both “CORRECT” and “CONSERVATIVE”).
Since 2020, RFK Jr and his Anti-Vaxx Colleagues have been appearing on Conservative podcasts and news such as Tucker Carlson, Fox News, America’s Voice, OAN, and Newsmax programs spewing his Anti-Trump’s-Operation-Warp-Speed-Covid-Vaxx, Anti-Science, Anti-Medicine mantra even before Trump’s Operation Warp Speed Phase 3 clinical trials of the Covid vaccine were complete, and long before RFK Jr’s 2024 Great Conservative Awakening.
What bothers me the most was when RFK Jr appeared on a July 10, 2021 Charlie Kirk podcast and RFK Jr fed the same Anti-Vaxx, Anti-Science, and Vaccine Fear to the young, future Conservative generation of Kirk’s audience.
Don’t go thinking that everything is hunky-dory in the HHS now that RFK Jr is in charge. Medicare and Part D plans’ premiums are expected to increase for 2026, Covid vaccines are not available in our small town pharmacies, and if they do become available, our pharmacist isn’t sure if Medicare or Part D will pay for it. They’ve been free through Medicare in the past.
Although Medicare Open Enrollment doesn’t start until October 15, according to an update from our Part D plan, our Part D plan premium, which was $0 (yes zero dollars) for 2025 and only 50 cents a month in 2024 will increase to $9.60 a month for 2026. And because RFK Jr is “not recommending” certain vaccines (specifically the Covid vaccine) private insurance companies and Medicare probably won’t be required to cover them and other “not recommended” vaccines and medicines. Thank you RFK Jr – you need to go.
