How Social Security Picks Your Payment Day

Social Security pays once a month, and the benefit arrives in the month after the one it covers — your July benefit is paid in August. Which day it arrives depends on the birthday of the person whose work record you are paid on:

Retired or disabled workers go by their own birthday: the 1st through 10th means the second Wednesday, the 11th through 20th the third Wednesday, and the 21st through 31st the fourth Wednesday. Spouses and survivors go by the worker’s birthday, not their own — so a married couple can be paid on different days.

Some people are paid on the 3rd of the month instead, whatever the birthday. SSA pays on the 3rd if you filed for benefits before May 1, 1997. If you filed later, you are still paid on the 3rd if you also receive SSI; your income is deemed to an SSI recipient; your state pays your Medicare premiums; you live in a foreign country; you were paid on the 3rd and later became entitled on another record, with no break in entitlement; you receive garnished payments, tax levy payments, or payments made through SSA’s critical payment system; or you are entitled on the same record as someone in one of these groups. If you are paid on the 3rd, you can ask to switch to the birthday schedule, as long as everyone paid on your record agrees — and the switch is permanent. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is paid on the 1st.

When a payment day lands on a weekend or a federal holiday, the money comes the business day before. In 2026, for example, the second Wednesday of November (Wed, Nov 11) is a federal holiday, so that payment arrives Tue, Nov 10. Why Some Months Show Two SSI Payments

When the 1st of a month is a Saturday, Sunday or holiday, SSI for that month is paid on the last business day of the month before. That is why SSA's calendar sometimes shows two SSI payments in one month and none in the next. For example, SSI for November 2026 arrives Fri, Oct 30, and SSI for January 2027 arrives Thu, Dec 31, 2026.

It is not an extra payment. The early deposit is the next month’s money, so budget it for that month. The same weekend-and-holiday rule moves the Wednesday and 3rd-of-the-month payments too — usually by a day or two, and occasionally into the month before. The January 2027 payment for people paid on the 3rd, for example, arrives Thu, Dec 31, 2026.

When the 2027 COLA Shows Up in Your Payment

The 2027 cost-of-living adjustment applies to December 2026 benefits, which are paid in January 2027 — so that payment is the first one with the raise. Most people get it on their usual Wednesday in January. If you are paid on the 3rd, it comes early — Thu, Dec 31, 2026 — because the usual day falls on a weekend or holiday. SSI rises with the January 2027 payment, which arrives early, on Thu, Dec 31, 2026.

If a Payment Is Late or Missing

SSA asks that you allow three additional mailing days before contacting them about a payment that did not arrive on the expected date. If you get direct deposit, check with your bank first.
