Are We Witnessing the Collapse of the LGBTQ+ Movement?

The LGBTQ+ movement, like all ideological movements of its kind, relies on new converts to survive and grow. But data increasingly shows that LGBTQ+ identification is in freefall among young people – perhaps indicating that we are witnessing its collapse in real time.

The first rumblings of a cultural shift came earlier this year. A February Gallup poll found that just nine percent of Americans identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender in 2025 – a slight but significant drop from 9.3 percent in 2024.

On its face, that may not seem dramatic. But since Gallup first began asking this question in 2012, the number had only ever gone in one direction – up. That year, just 3.5 percent of Americans identified as LGBT. For more than a decade, the movement appeared to be on an unstoppable upward trajectory. Now, for the first time, it has reversed.

Shortly after the Gallup survey, political scientist Eric Kaufmann published findings from a massive study of 68,000 U.S. undergraduates. His results were even more striking. Just 3.6 percent of students identified as a gender other than male or female – down sharply from 5.2 percent in 2024 and 6.8 percent in 2022 or 2023. As Kaufmann stated, “the share of trans-identified students has effectively halved in just two years.”

Even more telling is what’s happening within the pipeline of new students on campus. Freshmen in the 2024–25 academic year were less likely to identify as trans or queer than seniors – the exact opposite of what was happening just a few years ago, when younger cohorts were driving the surge. That suggests not just a plateau, but a reversal.

Then came perhaps the most revealing data point of all. Psychologist Jean M. Twenge analyzed CDC data and found that among adults ages 18–24, identification as lesbian, gay, or bisexual peaked at around 20 percent in 2022 before dropping to just over 15 percent by 2025. That’s a 21 percent decline in just three years.

The steepest drop came among young women identifying as bisexual – a group that had previously driven much of the overall increase. This is an important distinction, as the percentage of young adults identifying as just gay or lesbian has remained more or less the same.

Put all of this together, and a pattern emerges that is impossible to ignore. LGBTQ+ identification does not look like a stable, innate characteristic expressing itself more freely over time, as liberals would suggest. Instead, it looks more and more like a social contagion that surged rapidly and is now receding.

For years, conservatives argued that the explosion in LGBTQ+ identification – particularly among young people – was not simply about long-suppressed identities finally coming to light. It was being actively driven by cultural forces, including Hollywood, academia, activist institutions, and a media environment that relentlessly promoted and normalized these identities while stigmatizing dissent.

Kaufmann himself made the comparison explicit, noting that “the fall of trans and queer seems most similar to the fading of a fashion or trend.”

From the 2010s through the early 2020s, LGBTQ+ identification followed a classic adoption curve. It built gradually, accelerating rapidly between 2020 and 2022, and has now entered a phase of decline. Could it reverse again? Possibly. Cultural movements are rarely linear. But at the moment, the zeitgeist has clearly shifted.

So, what changed?

There are several plausible explanations, and the answer is likely some combination of all of them.

First, the emergence of dissenting voices broke the illusion of unanimity. For years, questioning gender ideology came with enormous social and professional risk. But that began to change as de-transitioners started sharing their stories – often harrowing accounts of irreversible medical interventions pushed on them as minors. These stories cut through the abstract language of “affirming care” and forced a reckoning with real-world consequences.

Even some figures on the political left began to speak out, challenging the more extreme claims of transgender ideology despite intense backlash. That signaled to the broader public that skepticism was not only justified, but necessary.

Second, conservatives and grassroots activists played a sustained and often underappreciated role. High-profile moments helped – documentaries like Matt Walsh’s What is a Woman?, viral clips, and major public debates.

But just as important were the quieter efforts, simple things like parents speaking at school board meetings, individuals pushing back online, and communities organizing to protect children from ideological experimentation in classrooms. Over time, those efforts accumulated.

Third, the information environment itself changed. Prior to 2022, major social media platforms enforced strict ideological conformity on this issue. Dissenting views were often labeled “harmful” or “misinformation” and removed. That created a distorted perception of consensus, particularly among young people who live much of their lives online.

That all changed in 2022 with Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter, now X. Musk destroyed X’s censorship infrastructure, exposing many young people to arguments challenging the dominant narrative – and they responded. The timing is impossible to ignore. The peak and subsequent decline in LGBTQ+ identification aligns closely with this shift in the digital landscape.

Finally, there is the simple explanation of young people simply moving on. Cultural fads come and go, especially among younger generations. What was once seen as rebellious or identity-defining can quickly become passé.

None of this means the issue is settled. Far from it. The LGBTQ+ movement remains deeply entrenched in many institutions and continues to push aggressively on multiple fronts. And the human cost of the last decade is real. There are young people who were placed on puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, or subjected to irreversible surgeries before they were capable of informed consent. Cases like that of Fox Varian, who successfully sued medical providers after receiving a double mastectomy at 16, are likely just the beginning of a much larger reckoning.

Those individuals deserve accountability and justice.

But the broader cultural trend is undeniable. The data suggests that what was once presented as an inevitable march of progress may, in fact, have been something far more transient.

The rise of the LGBTQ+ movement was rapid. Its decline may be just as swift. The only question now is what comes next – and whether we’ve learned anything from this grotesque social experiment.

How does a people group that represents <10% have such a prominent position if it weren’t for government giving them that advantage? The loudest aren’t the majority and yet we think they are because we’ve been conditioned and coerced into thinking so.

I give credit to TP USA and Newsmax for getting the TRUTH out there! I just read that Newsmax now has 25 million social media followers..and their news programs are now watched by over 50 million and being carried in every major cable bundle..so once people watch and hear the truth, they will hopefully stop watching ANY of the lying news media and maybe our country can finally breath a sigh of relief. Shocking: We aren’t actually a racist country, everyone doesn’t want to be gay or trans, young people are flocking back to religion, politicians don’t care about anything but their own power, Orange man isn’t bad, wow, what a wake up call for so many “sheep” that WERE blindly following the liberal lies..I have hope again. I just hope November doesn’t go as badly as people think. Get out and VOTE everyone!

I hope and pray that this is happening! My two grandsons will be entering college in the next two years and I have been praying that they aren’t “contaminated” with this stuff as they start their next years of education. Prayer changes things, so in addition to the other factors stated in this article, we can pray for this evil and mental sickness to end.

Any one group does NOT have the explicit right to impose its ideals upon the rest of the country. I don’t want anything shoved onto my existance, I will choose what to believe in. Demanding me to accept what I choose to deny is wrong. ‘NUFF SAID!

A small percentage but a very sad mental problem persists. I suppose that the notoriety of claiming to be of this group has worn off with time. The number should be ZERO.

This ridiculous movement was and is simply a tool for the Democrats/Communists to use to divide families and create chaos in the country. That is one of the first step radical liberals use to take hold and progress their oppressive society. Thanks be to God that Trump was elected because had the other immoral, greedy party been elected, we would be toast by now.

Hopefully this is a sign of the collapse of the Democrat party. They stand for everything that is wrong, absolutely everything. Anything they stand for is specifically prohibited in the word of God, in the Bible. They are truly the party of Satan and they only wish to destroy this country. Let’s hope that they are going out of existence. The other one that’s vanishing is the global hoax known as climate change/global warming. They only been beating that dead horse for over 50 years, I think now they’re finally going to dismount when they realize that AI requires real power 24/7 365

That’s right this was a social experiment. In 4 years time Biden created millions of trans people who were brainwashed into being trans. They might have been gay or Lesbians but not to the tune of surgical intervention. They were talking kindergartners into trans first with drugs then with surgery. Before their hormones had kicked in. Now we see that trans was a policy of the democrats to sterilize a whole generation. And what for to gain their vote? Or destroy the white race. From the Supreme Court judge on down they couldn’t define what is a woman. It was a whole culture set up to instigate hatred on those that didn’t agree with the Biden policy. For what they were doing was mutilating these children for life no matter how many drugs they fed them or how many body parts they cut off. Genetically they are a man or a woman. What God has created man should not destroy.

Unfortunately, the transgender craziness has become joined at the hip with ordinary traditional LGB sexual orientations. Those are what they are. There is no reason at all to link them with either (a) the transgender movement, which is really a form of mental illness, or (b) the weird “queer” performances that are causing lots of people to lose patience with all of the above. It is going to take a lot longer for the transgender craziness to fade away but it eventually will. In many cases, changes in the world are driven by insurance issues. The medical malpractice insurance companies are going to start writing exclusions for transgender “medical care” and then it should really start to collapse.

Well as far as “transgender” goes…I am 1000% SURE (and always have been) that there is not a single person in this world who does not KNOW there is NO SUCH THING as one gender becoming the opposite gender. Ain’t happening. I don’t care if it’s a scientist, a professor, or the Pope–they KNOW it’s a psychotic fantasy. The fact any of them would pretend otherwise is beyond disgusting. “Transgender” is a made-up word, by people who have ALWAYS KNOWN BETTER.

I am a natural redhead. Natural redheads make up 1% to 2% of the world’s population. I demand more advantages for everything I’ve had to put up with in my life. All the taunts of “carrot top” have given me PTSD. Adding to that, I’ve had to wear glasses since I was 6-years-old. Imagine the stress I had to deal with being called a “four-eyed carrot top.” I DEMAND REPARATIONS!!!

The gay people I know do not ascribe to all this transgendering craze at all and resent the unfair parallels people draw between the two very different groups. They feel the trans movement hijacked the gay community in attempts to “normalize” trans and steal all the hard-fought gains gays have finally made. This was all to the detriment of the gays who now are unfairly cast in the same light as those who demand trans surgeries for children, and our schools encouraging children to question their gender! Not a fair representation of the gay community at large.

It is MY hope the movement is going away.

I am aware of its existence and necessity, but I do NOT need to be beaten over the head daily/hourly/minute by minute. We don’t (IMHO) need movies/TV shows/commercials and constant reminders of any of this.

Very sadly, there have been profound losses that cannot be reversed at all. I knew a beautiful and talented young person who struggled for acceptance and had been bullied a lot. She thought that transitioning to male would be the answer. During the transition she sought the Lord thru church and friendships with Christian people, and also sought secular counseling. A Christian leader who she shared her real story with was trying to help her accept and grow in her real gender, but the counselor told her to stay away from Christians. She listened to the counselor, and continued with hormones and surgery. She moved away, and on social media I could see she still struggled with gender identity, like wearing female fashion tho in a “male” body. Very tragically, she ended her own life. This world lost a beautiful and gentle person who deserved to get the right kind of help.

The “T” part of it is a fad and, like all fads, has run it’s course. I pity the kids that chose to mutiliate their bodies to follow the fad. There will be an upsurge in suicides in a few years when these kids realize what they have done.

Might have left out a reason. I see a huge Christian revival going on in the US with young people. I think with that revival kids are learning to love the sinner, hate the sin. And I think kids views are more mature leaning to an attitude of … if that’s your thing, do it, but don’t expect my world to change to fit your needs.

I have family members who belong to that group. They are embarrassed by it and would like to see it end. They were happy to live a quiet life just like everyone else. Excellent article Shane, but you failed to add a very formidable change agent. Prayer and the mighty hand of God. There is indeed much work that still needs to be done, but with earnest and unceasing prayer, mixed with honest conversations, things happen! With the execution of Charlie Kirk, clips of his Q & A conversations about gender pop up on the internet on many platforms as well. He had some amazingly clear answers to tough questions.

WONDERFUL NEWS.
Even many shrinks, some who trans-ed but later said it was the biggest mistake of their life, and have retrans-ed back. Other psychiatrists, NOW NOT AFRAID TO SPEAK OUT WITHOUT FEAR OF LOSING THEIR PRACTICE OR BEING ATTACKED, have spent years studying and counseling youth and adults who trans-ed, have discovered it is truly a mental disorder, which can be treated with meds, the proper counseling, and support. And that it can be reversed providing they haven’t mutilated their body by slicing or chopping off healthy body parts.

The ” everything after LBG” crowd’s loud, hateful antics have turned off so many people – straight & LBG – it’s time for that movement to die , let everyone calm down again & simply except each other at face value. I for one am tired of people introducing themselves as ” I’m part of the lbgtqia+- infinity movement”, rather than saying ” hi, my name is…” I prefer people over labels.

They are called “queer” for a reason. In its original meaning, it meant odd, unusual, or abnormal. The perpetuation of the species requires procreation, so that would be significantly normal.
When people feel insignificant, unrecognized, or irrelevant, the desire to be noticed, special, needed, or at least seen and recognized grows commensurately.
The queer nation grew until it became commonplace. Now it is simply restoring its significance by reducing its numbers. The thrill of being a member of a special group did not fulfill the need to be recognized as being unique among peers.

I’m not approving of that kind of lifestyle, but accepted people making their own choices in life.
The LGBTQ+ community were experiencing more ‘normal’ lives because in 2015 they were given the legal right to marry. Over time they were being more ‘accepted as normal’.

However — It was the “activist” groups coming up with Drag Queens and Kings pushing into K-12 schools and all kinds of media (TV shows, movies and Hollywood) in an attempt to gain future members that caused more negative reactions than positive. Those activists caused a huge set-back for their acceptance.

Of course this was all a trend. Kids are subject to being in the “in crowd” and will do a lot to belong, especially when they are granted special favors re: the law the the economy. The dominant voices of the past few years, the loudest and most belligerent, were voices of sexual identity /gender people that got everyone excited and incited. But the trend now is the opposite and the results are interesting. How easily influenced the high school and college kids are…

Perhaps the percentage of persons who identify as LGBTQ+ is less than 9 percent. But it is not zero. This is not a new “movement.” It is acknowledged – and condemned – in the Bible. Some persons are born with physical anomalies like some genetic forms of breast cancer which are not visible until adulthood. Why is it not possible that some persons are born with sexual anomalies that do not present until adulthood?

The Fad is over as most younger adults are moving on. The significant increase from 2010 onward was mainly due to being seen as a rebellion or fad etc. The sad part is that we allowed the media and politics to push it to the point where, normally people were gagging on it. Hopefully it’s going out of fashion.
