President Donald Trump issued a pivotal executive order last month striking against federal union bosses’ power to undermine the president’s ability to fulfill his mandate from the American people. While Democrats and the media have predictably spun this move as an attack on workers’ rights, Trump’s bold stand prioritizes efficiency, accountability, and the safety of our nation over the narrow interests of federal union leadership.
The “Exclusions from Federal Labor-Management Relations Programs” order specifically terminates collective bargaining for federal worker unions within agencies with national security missions. This long-overdue reform will better ensure our government operates with the agility and focus required in a world of complex threats.
For too long, federal union leaders have operated as a shadow government, wielding outsized influence over agency operations while cloaking their actions in the rhetoric of workers’ rights. The reality is far less noble. These union bosses, representing roughly 1.25 million of the 2.3 million federal employees, have turned collective bargaining into a weapon to obstruct reform, shield underperformers from accountability, and bog down agencies in endless negotiations.
Take, for instance, the Department of Veterans Affairs, where unions have historically resisted accountability measures designed to improve care for our nation’s heroes. During Trump’s first term, unions filed dozens of grievances to block policies that would have streamlined operations, leaving veterans caught in the crossfire. The new order ensures that VA services can’t be jeopardized by a few union bosses upset that Trump is demanding better performance and firing people who don’t do their jobs.
The Civil Service Reform Act of 1978, which codified these bargaining rights, was meant to balance employee protection with public service. Instead, it has become a straitjacket, tying the hands of agency leaders who need flexibility to respond to crises – whether it’s securing our borders, countering cyberattacks, or ensuring energy independence.
Consider the stakes. In an era of rising global threats—China’s economic aggression, Iran’s nuclear ambitions, and cyberattacks from rogue actors—our national security agencies cannot afford to be hamstrung by the demands of a few union bosses who are in no way accountable to the American taxpayers they are supposed to serve.
Trump’s executive order cuts through this red tape with surgical precision. By targeting agencies with “primary functions” in intelligence, counterintelligence, investigative, or national security work—think the Departments of Defense, Justice, State, and Homeland Security—it frees these critical entities from the paralyzing grip of union contracts renegotiated just a few months ago under the Biden administration.
“The President needs a responsive and accountable civil service to protect our national security,” a White House fact sheet stated. This isn’t about silencing workers; it’s about ensuring that agencies tasked with safeguarding America can act swiftly and decisively without union leaders filing grievances to stall progress.
Critics, predictably, cry foul, with union leaders like Everett Kelley of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) calling the order a “disgraceful attack” on civil servants. But their outrage rings hollow. Federal union leaders have aligned themselves with partisan agendas, consistently endorsing Democrats and funneling dues into political causes that often clash with the broader public interest.
Their resistance to Trump’s reforms isn’t about protecting workers – it’s about preserving their own power. The American people didn’t elect union bosses to run the government; they elected a president to deliver results.
Trump’s executive order also aligns with a broader conservative vision of government: lean, effective, and focused on core responsibilities. “Federal employees already enjoy more benefits and protections than the private sector,” Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) said on the Senate floor in support of Trump’s actions. “They don’t need the ability to hold national security hostage to the union agenda.”
Importantly, the order isn’t a blanket ban on unions. Police, firefighters, and certain local offices remain unaffected, in recognition of their unique roles. The Secretaries of Defense and Veterans Affairs can even suspend the exclusions for specific subdivisions if they certify compatibility with national security—a pragmatic nod to flexibility. This isn’t union-busting; it’s a targeted effort to restore accountability where it matters most.
Of course, the union bosses won’t go quietly. Lawsuits are already piling up, with groups like AFGE vowing to fight in court. They argue that the order oversteps executive authority or violates statutory protections. But Section 7103(b)(1) of the Federal Service Labor-Management Relations Statute gives the president clear power to exclude agencies for national security reasons. The courts are likely to uphold Trump’s determination, recognizing that his constitutional duty to protect the nation trumps union grievances.
This executive order is a testament to Trump’s willingness to take on entrenched interests. It’s a reminder that leadership means making tough calls, even when they spark backlash. Conservatives should rally behind this reform, not only for its immediate impact but also for what it represents: a government that answers to the people, not to bureaucrats or union bosses.
As America faces unprecedented challenges, we need a federal workforce that’s nimble, accountable, and mission driven. Trump’s executive order is a bold step toward that goal, cutting through decades of bureaucratic inertia to put national security first and champion a government that works for all Americans – not just federal employees with union cards.

This is going to be an interesting fight! It’s going to go to the heart of what Union stand for, corruption and getting paid for not working. If you want to make a lot of money and not have to work join a union. And the union workers are giving all their money to the bosses. If you want to make a job unbelievably expensive and impossible complete hire union work. One of their key phrases is you need to wobble the job. Has called shut it down and make it last as long as possible and make as much money for you as it can to hell with whoever’s paying for it and in this case to hell with the rest of the country. Public employee unions should be illegal. They are negotiating against you
There should be no government employee unions, period.
All federal workers need to be reminded that their positions are for serving “We the people” not themselves or their unions! We, the taxpayers, pay their salaries so we should expect accountability!
Unions should be outlawed. You shouldn’t have to pay to have a job. I was forced to join the union years ago when I worked at Gemco and they never did one thing for us that we asked for. When I went to work for the county I had my choice and opted to NOT join. Only thing the union did was help someone ‘that should have been fired’ to keep their job.
To paraphrase Dan Bongino and Tom Holman: You can gauge the effectiveness of your action by the response of your adversary to it. Sounds like it’s having the desired effect.
Many years ago there was a real need for worker’s unions because workers were over-worked and under-paid. The got no sick leave, the conditions in their “shops” were horrible not to mention the safety issues. But all of that has changed. We now have many federal and state laws that cover these issues. The real need for unions is over. They are now corrupt and threatening to the economic health of our country. Seems many of their leaders only want power and money. In my opinion, unions are no longer useful and should cease to exist.
Long overdue & about time worse than Pvt sector Unions
THIS SAYS IT ALL! I’m behind President Trump!!
“For too long, federal union leaders have operated as a shadow government, wielding outsized influence over agency operations while cloaking their actions in the rhetoric of workers’ rights. The reality is far less noble. These union bosses, representing roughly 1.25 million of the 2.3 million federal employees, have turned collective bargaining into a weapon to obstruct reform, shield underperformers from accountability, and bog down agencies in endless negotiations.”
George Meany, a Democrat who led the AFL-CIO, back in the Sixties, was OPPOSED to government unions because the employees had an advantage in being able to shut down the government. There were other Democrats [sane at that time] that agreed with him. As noted, these employees got extra benefits to [supposedly] compensate them for lower wages. Now, they get high wages AND high benefits!
When these union leaders lose this court battle they should have to pay all legal costs. The people getting some of their tax dollars back would be novel.
Unions should not be allowed in any civil service/government workplace.
Unions running national security employees should be abolished.
More proof the democrats care more about power than security and safety of our nation. Again they go through the courts to keep that power and weaken America at ever turn. Using the federal employees as pawns. Who have been made slaves, pawns to the unions and not supporting the safety and security of the country. They are not only tying the hands of president Trump but any and all future presidents as well. Democrats don’t see it that way because they will rule as a dictator and would never come up with an order like Trump has proposed. Any Trump policy is dismissed out of hand because they want to destroy America under Trump. They use the courts to get it done. Soros didn’t get the medal of freedom not for nothing. He bought it.
I’m thrilled to see these Unions are starting to be held accountable! They use to have a place fighting for the common worker! But, not anymore! They’ve become Political, unaccountable and work more to subvert Government and all those who’re outspoken against them. May President Trump investigate these Unions through-n-through, holding them wholly accountable!
As far as I am concerned, Federal workers should not be allowed to unionize. When it comes to negotiations with these Public Sector unions, there is no one to represent the interests of the TAXPAYERS, who are paying these workers!!!
In the private sector, union bosses have to negotiate with management bosses. In government, unions contribute to the campaigns of elected government officials and then we make believe that these government officials are fully on the other side of the table, looking out only for the good of the nation during negotiations.
This should be interesting, the greedy unions have been in power forever. The teacher’s union is probably the most corrupt and the taxpayer’s biggest threat. The unions cost AMERICANS big bucks and that’s how the foreign entities got a foothold.
the unions main job is to protect the useless, lazy, time and money stealing, corrupt, sleeping on the job workers that wouldnt be able to get a real job except for the union bosses. the bosses usually reccomend hiring their relatives and friends.it truely amazes me that a union boss can collect 2 pensions. one for being a union worker and one for being the union president or business agent. ever wonder why the teamster unions smybol are two horse heads ? its the only animal that sleeps standing up one of the companies i worked for told me i had to join the union. i informed him i didnt need or wanted to join the union. i came to work on time, every day, did my job without any supervision to the best of my ability, obeyed all safety rules. i didnt need the union to protect me. why should i have to pay dues and entrance fees for nothing. i had to join anyway. a waste of my money. heaven forbid you should go above and beyond other union members workwise. i was told how hard and how much i should produce by the shop stewerd every day as not to make my fellow workers look bad, which they were .get rid of all these crooked stealing unions…..
Federal gov’t jobs are some of the best paid with best benefits compared to non-gov’t jobs. I worked at the Pentagon before unions and loved it. The people who fought for unions were the slackers/lazy employees who wanted job security no matter how they performed or how many bathroom breaks they took.
Amen W.J. Lee!
Unions for civil service never made sense.
There should be NO employee unions in government. NONE.
One of Bush Jr.s greatest mistake was to make the Homeland Security Dept a union shop
Don’t forget the powerful CA teacher’s union that owns huge real estate holdings that all of the middle class cannot participate in. It would be nice to own even a sliver of a % as these are building like the ones Amazon owns in Arizona. Owning one of these building with long term corporate leases would give stability to retirement accounts and others who need to exchange for a property with stagility.
Taking on the CCP-owned Big Union bosses. About time someone exposed those traitors and crooks.
Imo
President Trump is doing the right thing, unions are no longer needed! Unions feel they can tell the businesses what to do, rather than do the job they were hired to do! Unions have become more like Socialist and Marxist, they too must be dealt with!
Unions overstep their bounds to protect bad workers which promotes bad behavior and work ethics.
STAY THE COURSE!!
Unions have outlived their usefulness anyway. There are labor laws and business competition now to protect worker’s rights.
Unions in the FED employment area stand between the tax payer with elected President. There is no reason to permit unions to dictate operations. Wherever they operate unions push to run the company. The result is an unresponsive and inefficient mess.
I have never had much appreciation for unions. I have limited experience with them, and all of it was bad. To have unions mixed up with our national security has never made sense to me….imagine having the military “unionized”. Can you see the chaos when an order goes out and some collective bargaining has to take place before it’s followed? Don’t get me wrong here, unions did and in some places still do have purpose…but when we learn that the leadership of unions are pillaging their workers, playing politics across the board, and getting in the way of the Republic as a nation…well that’s the line I would draw. It’s hard enough to accomplish the “mission” without union “participation” making the water muddy and stopping up the pipes. I’m no so much anti-union , but I am pro-effeciency and mission success.
Government employee union serves one purpose only, to hold the public hostage tp their insane demands.
How about we just make it illegal for unions, as entities, to contribute to elected, or soon to be elected, officials? That would clean up a lot of the mess. The unions funnel so much money back into the pockets of politicians that they cling to power through graft and corruption. Term limits and contribution reform— that’s all it would take to straighten this out.
It’s about the President Trump toke a stance for National Security for somehow the security of our nation has been bog down The Unions,
A well written piece of journalism.
I and another veteran friend decided for similar reasons, not to use our VA benefits. I discussed the VA over many years with other vets who did use the health care benefits, and they stated they received good care, other than two who were in an area in V.N. in which it was documented Agent Orange was utilized and they likely were exposed. Neither of them got past the dead end in attempting to use VA services to make or classify them with even a partial disability and their 201 files stated what I mentioned. I’ve long held that the U.S. owed to vets much more than what they were provided after serving in war. This was always my main reason for steering clear of the VA. Unions I place in a similar position for government employees as noted in the article.
I enjoyed W.J. Lee’s article ‘President Trump Takes on Federal Union Bosses’
“Trump executive order cuts through this red tape with surgical precision”. – writers are considered good, when you smile after a sentence.
This author can’t jerk off the president more. What a simp.
Trump’s new crusade against federal union bosses is silly. Federal unions are paper tigers. They can’t bargain for pay and benefits, they can’t force a strike and they can’t even force workers to join their union and pay dues. The government already has the right to terminate telework agreements. Don’t we have more important problems to “take on?”
This will inevitably be reversed. All the private sector peasants will still be working their jobs making less than 50k a year and going broke with trumps policies and all the feds will go back to making 100k in addition to all the benefits while sitting around. Can’t wait to fill up my cups full of conservative tears.
