U.S. Capitol Building close up

At least seven U.S. professions have mandatory retirement ages, some as young as 57. To that end, should members of Congress have a mandatory retirement age?

Term limits yes. Retirement age no. Age is not an issue. Career politicians staying in one job forever is an issue.

It’s not a mandatory age we need, it’s TERM LIMITS!

There would not be a need for mandatory retirement age (or term limits, for that matter) for our elected officials if choice #3 worked the way our Founders intended. In a democratic republic, our Founders foresaw and informed citizenry being derived through public campaigns, debates, town halls, and yes, the press. Sadly today, the press has become the culprit that has contaminated and prevented the citizenry from becoming truly informed. The average American voter who get their news and information solely from biased and fake-news media outlets, only receives lies and omitted truths from which to make educated voting decisions. Every election we scratch our heads wondering why and how radical idiots are elected and re-elected to lead our government. Blame goes to the voter! We can mandate a certain retirement age, or even amend the Constitution with term limits. But until the voters get out of their propagandized cocoons from Marxist media, nut jobs like Maxine Waters, Nancy Pelosi, Bernie Sanders, AOC, Rashida Talib, Ilhan Omar, Pramila Jayapal, Jasmine Crockett…(I could go on and on listing more sewer rats, but you get the idea) will continue to elected and re-elected. With any decision in life, including voting decisions, it is always wise to partner with our Creator first. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.”  Proverbs 3:5

Term limits & less pension. They make more from their insider trading then their pension.

Age is not an issue. Term limits are a must. Look at the mess California is with several Democrats who have been in their positions since before Christ. They do nothing for either the improving of the state or our country.

Why? What about presidents? If they did, Donald Trump would not be president and he seems very capable. I think members of congress should, instead, be limited to 2 terms, then go back to their earlier profession. Ask that question in a poll, please.

I am not so much interested in a mandatory retirement age as I am in term limits: Lifetime total of 6 terms in the House, 2 terms in the Senate, for a limit of 12 years in either. One can, however, serve 12 years in both.

They left out a very important choice, term limits. These people get in and never leave and use their positions to get rich, look at Pelosi and Biden, insider trading and all. How does a person on a government salary become a multimillionaire in a few years? They need to enforce the rules and laws, if any of us pulled the crap they do we’d be in prison for life. Must be nice to be untouchable.

I am presently 78 and feel my ability to see, understand, and give credible thought and conversation to be very much in tact. In fact if this rule was applied today, we would lose the wisdom, and historical prospective of many presently in congress, such as senator Kennedy whom I love to hear, as he adds prospective to issues.

Maybe a mandatory cognitive test…

We need term limits for sure! As far as age, cognitive testing should be mandatory every year after age 70 or 75 and administer by a non-partisan doctor.

I don’t support a mandatory retirement age. Not in a “white-collar” profession. I know an attorney who at 87 is as “sharp as a razor.” A woman I minister to at an assisted living home is 102; ambulatory and mentally acute. Mandatory retirement due to age is “age discrimination; something AMAC should oppose.
However; there absolutely should be term limits. I’ll be generous compared to others I’ve discussed this with. Twelve years and the legislator is “out.”

I would much rather there be term limits without the ability to be elected into either branch of congress, elimination of some of the perks. they should pay for their own health insurance and pay into Social Security. No lifetime pension. Their main residence should be in their district. We need to end the career political system that seems to have become the norm.

Mandatory retirement is ok but, I would much rather see a 2 term limit. If a two term is appropriate for the president, it’s appropriate for CONgress.

But term limits are preferable. Whichever occurs first. Congress has become the most expensive nursing home in the world. Perhaps IQ testing should be required as well.

Not necessarily age but having a limited number of terms. Not any different than what the president has.

Old politicians are like old athletes. They enjoy the limelight that they can’t walk away. Then they make bad decisions, they lose track of what they are doing, can’t produce like they used to and they eventually go out on a sour note and everything positive they did has been forgotten.

That was a hard one for me. I’m really not for mandatory retirement ages, but we sure have a lot of old, moldy geezers that need to go home and stay there. There are a few exceptions though. I think we really need to get term limits in. Congress should be a civic duty, not a career.

AMAC is not allowing my comment to be posted….says “awaiting approval.” I called them and sent 2 emails with the exact comment I tried to post to the person(s) in charge of judging comments…crickets!

The comment contained no profanity, no hate-speech, and no hyperlinks, and was actually calmer than many posts I see…including my own!

If AMAC can’t even extend the courtesy to provide an explanation as to why my comment can’t be posted, I question their understanding of the First Amendment.

So, it looks like I will be leaving AMAC and continue my writing on SubStack.

God Bless America!

Chuck Grassley is still sharp as were the late Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms. It’s not AGE that is the problem; it’s weak minds. That can happen at ANY age–look at AOC and Jazzy! If our news media were HONEST and showed people as they really are, we’d know who could function and who couldn’t!

Better than a specific age, how are after the age of 70 every member of Congress take a yearly cognitive test. If they fail it’s time to retire.

A mandatory retirement age for members of congress would be a disservice to those of us in the later years of our lives. It would remove a critical voice from the public debate on many important issues from the vantage point of our most experienced citizens. Yes, to term limits but no to mandatory retirement age!

Regarding term limits, I believe that 20 years in Congress is more than enough.
Many individuals work that much and retire with a pension.
The longer a person stays in DC, the more chance they can become corrupted by the system.

I believe they should have term limits. So should supreme court. If the leader is limited to a set amount of time then so should congress, senate and courts.

When you give them unlimited terms the power goes to their head and they start to believe they are better than everyone else. If we start taking back this power then maybe they will start believing that the people OF” WE THE PEOPLE” from the U.S. Constitution really do matter.
To many politicians in our home towns and governments have went in as small for the people public figures. And came out big headed give me the money or else fuller than themselves lying thief’s. They no longer look out for the small people they just look out for their portfolio. It is time “WE THE PEOPLE” stand up for ourselves and stop letting them serve unlimited terms and using us to line their portfolio. If the general public cannot get a decent pay raise then why does congress get to give themselves one every year..?

I would actually prefer there be term limits along with an age limit of 70. After a certain age people should be spending their time with family, not fleecing tax payers. Also, athletes are supposed to be banned from betting on games that they are involved in, so politicians should not be allowed to invest in companies that they pass bills on.
