Sixty-three years ago, 93 U.S. Rangers – handpicked for a dangerous mission in Vietnam – boarded a plane at Travis AF Base in California, destined for Clark AF Base in the Philippines. The last leg was Guam to Clark, key to the war. Inexplicably, their plane went down, and all souls were lost. For six decades, family have wanted these U.S. Rangers, their loved ones’ names on the Vietnam Memorial. Please…
They call it Tiger Flight 739. The day was clear in California, clear too between Guam and Clark. The mission was military, men active duty U.S. Rangers on orders – still classified – and location well within the Vietnam combat zone – an area regularly used by B-52s, plus air refueling, transport ops.
So special were these men, perhaps on the order of Doolittle’s Raiders, they told wives and girlfriends this could be a “suicide mission.” Many lingered long in their goodbyes. They knew whatever those orders were, the risks were inordinately high, but they volunteered.
Three of these U.S. Rangers were from Maine, where I grew up. Their names are known and commemorated – with the other 90 from across America – on a small memorial in Columbia Falls, Maine.
That memorial was erected in 2021, for the men and their families, by the non-profit “Wreaths Across America” and founder Morrill Worcester. The memorial is dedicated to these incredible, unrecognized heroes, Vietnam veterans who “selflessly sacrificed their lives” for America.
The most incredible part, however, is that these men have yet to have their names etched on the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C, where they belong. Two reasons are given, which Biden and Democrats controlling Congress in 2021 used to kill a bill that would have made it so.
The first is that the mission was so highly classified, of such nature, that those not cleared to know what the Rangers were on orders to do never knew, so mission objectives could not be validated. True or not, that is an indefensible reason not to honor these American heroes, Vietnam casualties.
Second is that no president has formally declared the location they went down, just east of Clark, almost 300 miles west of Guam, part of the Vietnam “combat zone.” That is another red herring, since combat aircraft and bombers often were in this airspace, as were combat naval craft.
Bottom line: It is time. President Trump, as someone who has long known about this injustice suffered by these 93 U.S. Army Ranger heroes, their untimely deaths off Vietnam en route to combat, on active duty orders and daring all for this nation. My appeal: Please consider recognizing these 93 U.S. Army Rangers – officially putting their names on the Vietnam Memorial, where they belong. Thank you – from all those who have worn the uniform, who love America, and honor these men.
Robert Charles is a former Assistant Secretary of State under Colin Powell, former Reagan and Bush 41 White House staffer, attorney, and naval intelligence officer (USNR). He wrote “Narcotics and Terrorism” (2003), “Eagles and Evergreens” (2018), and is National Spokesman for AMAC. Robert Charles has also just released an uplifting new book, “Cherish America: Stories of Courage, Character, and Kindness” (Tower Publishing, 2024).

If the Democrats can hold 8 minutes of Silence, and erect a Shrine, for a Drug Addicted Criminal from Minnesota, these 93 U S ARMY RANGERS Certainly Should have Their Names on The Vietnam Memorial Wall. But that’s how the Libocrats are. They fight for the Criminals, not the True Heroes. I Pray that President will get that done for those Men and their Families. May God Bless Them.
For these 93 U.S. Army Rangers to have the recognition they deserve will be the right, proper, honorable thing to do.
I’m sure if you reach out and communicate with someone in the White House, like Susie Wiles or VP J.D. Vance,, that the President will consider adding these names to the Vietnam War Memorial via either an Executive Order or Executive Action.
These kinds of “hidden” government cover-up begs to ask, what else aren’t they telling the American people? Those who served and died for their country deserve better and so do their families.
Absolutely They need to be recognized and their names added to the Vietnam Memorial Wall So that their families and loved ones can heal adding healthy closer to their sad memories.
Yes! Please President Trump get those names on the wall!! I would sign a petition to help eoth this.
A secret mission does not constitute keeping these heroes secret!!!
They should be honored for the sake of their memory and their families.
hell yes
Mr Charles, please send your letters and article to Pete Hegseth….I’m fairly confident that’s the proper way to handle this situation
There is no reason why these 93 heroes should not have their names inscribed on THE WALL.
I Agree! Their sacrifice needs to be Honored!
To honor them by incorporating their names on the VietNam Memorial would be more than honorable. Yes, I agree: it would be right and proper. It is so sad when people in positions of authority are so bound by technicalities (or possible _______ [fill in the blank]), that they, in essence, refuse to recognize honorable service. I would say that, through proper channels, President Trump and his administration would more likely be the ones to make this right. Thank you. Proverbs 3, v. 5 – 6.
Their are more secret mission that may be still hidden, Honor and Respect for those who serve
Absolutely! Adding these 93 Army Rangers to the Vietnam War Memorial honors their honorable service to their country.
Whatever the ‘secret’ was the Biden administration used to deny this is in 2025 moot. And that secret wouldn’t have to come out anyway. Even if that plane were shot down by friendly fire or enemy fire, or whatever the reason was for denying their names being put on the Wall, it is also moot. Those Rangers had volunteered and knew they may not come home; so whatever caused their deaths doesn’t matter 63 years later.
Put their names on the Vietnam Memorial wall.
I agree! My first husband was KIA 29 November 1969 and he and all aboard the all volunteer Marine medevac he piloted are 15 W5 on The Wall. He is buried in Arlington.
Those Rangers should be on The Wall!
Honor these Rangers please
Please, President Trump, direct your Administration to fully honor the courage and dedication of these US Army Rangers, who died in service to our country during the Viet Nam War era while their loved ones are still alive.
Having served in combat in Nam, knowing all of us there were subjected to lies and coverups time and again ( take note of agent orange issue, we all still face), and as a result of seeing, after many years, that our government cannot be trusted with the truth, I am not surprised that this case has been left untouched. They claim “classification”. They claim risk to the nation. They lie. They cover their own butts. This is not new. There are multiple WWII and Korean events still hidden from view because they embarrass the leadership and erode their power bases. I have never heard this story about these Rangers….someone does know and someone must open the books. In the meantime, do the right thing….put their names on the wall with my friends who served and died.
Agreed! It is past time to remember and honor these brave soldiers! Git ‘er done, Mr. President!
Indisputably this needs to be done!
93 U.S. Army Rangers sacrificed their ALL. Including their names on the Vietnam Memorial Wall would honer them and their families for the future. There is no choice the right and just action is needed to place their names on the wall. President Trump do the right thing in this important matter.
I am the Niece of SP4 Donald A Sargent who was aboard that fateful flight. The unknown and no closure destroyed a lot of the families. My Nana went to her grave still saying he was coming home. There was families that have been threatened if they continued to look into this flight. My dad is 91 and I just showed him this article and he got tears in his eyes saying someone wants to help us.. We Will Never Forget and Qill Never Stop Fighting.
They deserve better, and so do their families!
Recognize, honor and respect! Rangers were on a special mission!
Agree!
It would be great if he does. But we should not be mad at him if he doesn’t, and we shouldn’t ask him to explain his reasons.
The 93 Rangers belong with their brothers who they were on a mission to rescue on the Viet Ban Memorial Wall. The loss of this unit is comparable to that of the 7th Cavalry toopers with Custer and the helicopter crash of the lost Seal Team 6.
My uncle was Robert Bako who perished on flight 739 6 years before I was born. All I have is the local newspaper’s write up /obituary and my parents told me about it being assumed sabotage. Of course all of my relatives are long gone, and I definitely want to be a part of making this right to honor a fallen son, brother, and uncle as well as all the rangers who made this ultimate sacrifice for this country. Shame on Joe Biden for making stupid excuses. Please President Trump, right this grievous injustice!
