How DEI Is Destroying the American Family

Discriminatory “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” (DEI) policies have been enshrined in virtually every major American institution for more than a decade now. While conservatives have made some laudatory progress in turning the cultural tide against DEI, the fallout on the American economy and, even more devastatingly, the American family, is only just beginning.

This week, Compact Magazine published what may be the most important long-form essay of the year. “The Lost Generation,” authored by aspiring screenwriter and odd-jobs aficionado Jacob Savage, describes in specific, heartbreaking detail the economic carnage that DEI has wrought on young men, and young white men in particular.

Savage provides staggering statistics on the race and gender-based overhaul of hiring practices in journalism and academia to highlight how DEI has fundamentally transformed the American workplace:

  • In 2011, 48 percent of lower-level TV writers in Los Angeles were white men; by 2024, that dropped to 11.9 percent.
  • In 2021, new hires at media giant Condé Nast were just 25 percent male and 49 percent white.
  • That same year, at NPR – funded by taxpayer dollars – 78 percent of new hires were non-white.
  • Since 2020, only 7.7 percent of Los Angeles Times interns have been white men.
  • In 2024, The Atlantic announced that three-quarters of editorial hires in the past year had been women, and 69 percent had been people of color.
  • In 2013, Vox Media was 82 percent male and 88 percent white; today it is 37 percent male and 59 percent white.
  • White men fell from 39 percent of tenure-track positions in the humanities at Harvard in 2014 to 18 percent in 2023.
  • In the Yale humanities department, just six out of 76 (7.9 percent) of tenure-track professors hired since 2018 have been white men.
  • UC Irvine has hired 64 tenure-track assistant professors since 2020 – just three (4.7 percent) are white men.
  • Since 2022, Brown University has hired 45 tenure-track professors in the humanities and social sciences; just three (6.7 percent) have been white, American men.
  • In 2014, white men were 31 percent of American medical students; by 2025, that had dropped to 20.5 percent.

As one hiring editor at a major newspaper told Savage, “It was a given that we weren’t gonna hire the best person… It was jarring how we would talk about excluding white guys.” As an Ivy League professor put it in describing how a hiring committee viewed one white male applicant, “On paper, he was so clearly the strongest candidate. It really kind of did feel like, well, we can’t not interview this guy. But we’re still not gonna hire him.”

But, critically, it isn’t all white men who have fallen into the crosshairs of the left’s DEI crusade. As Savage explains, “This isn’t a story about all white men. It’s a story about white male millennials in professional America… If you were forty in 2014 – born in 1974, beginning your career in the late-90s – you were already established. If you were thirty in 2014, you hit the wall.”

It’s not that zero older men fell victim to the DEI purge. But many older, more established white men were grandfathered into institutional power structures. To make up for that, Hollywood, newsrooms, universities, and corporations had to be all the more aggressive in discriminating against white and male applicants for jobs. As Savage writes regarding discrimination against white men in Hollywood, “Every fellowship, grant, and hiring incentive was suddenly oriented toward changing who got in the door.”

The result is a “lost generation” who did everything they were told to do – stay out of trouble, go to college, earn a degree, work hard – only to be told effectively, “white men need not apply.” This paragraph from Savage is as haunting as it is accurate:

For a decade, it kept going, faster and faster. Without any actual quotas to achieve – only the constant exhortation to ‘do better’ – the diversity complex became self-radicalizing, a strange confluence of top-down and bottom-up pressure. No one ever said what the right number of white men would be, but it was always fewer than you currently had.

The economic fallout from the left’s DEI rampage is easy to see. The establishment media is more aggressively left-wing than ever, a record low number of Americans trust the legacy press, and cable news ratings are through the floor. (Meanwhile, mediums like podcasts and Substack, which don’t have identity-based barriers to entry, are more popular than ever). Disney and Hollywood giants continue to take huge losses on projects because they care more about the identity of actors, writers, directors, and producers than telling compelling stories. Major brands like Target and Bud Light have faced consumer backlash, costing them billions of dollars.

And then there’s the personal economic fallout. Men like Savage have had their career progress blocked because of their race and gender. In his case, he was told by a veteran showrunner that the studio couldn’t hire him because he was white. As Savage writes, “I could see what was happening – I was being told point-blank what was happening – and still I thought I’d be the exception, that if I wrote one more script, took one more meeting, I’d slip through. But very few people get to be the exception.”

But as this gut-wrenching reflection also reveals, DEI has destroyed so much more than just economic opportunity, because economic opportunity is the foundation for personal growth and, ultimately, marriage and family life. Countless young men were systematically excluded from career success during their 20s and 30s – peak years to become established and settle down. When virtually every major institution has actively tried to block the financial advancement of entire generations of men, is it any surprise that marriage and fertility rates are collapsing?

Meanwhile, as one perceptive X user put it in response to Savage’s essay, “The women who ‘won’ the DEI lottery got careers instead of families, delayed fertility until it was too late. DEI attacked family formation from both sides, excluded men from provider roles, AND diverted women from their fertility window. Everyone lost.”

This breakdown of the family is a feature, not a bug, of the DEI complex, which is nothing more than a toxic blend of Marxist totalitarianism and modern race- and gender-based identity politics.

A core tenet of Marxism is that the family is the primary obstacle to state power. It is far more difficult to manipulate a person anchored in family, and a population capable of forming healthy marriages, raising children, and trusting one another cannot be reshaped by emotional blackmail. DEI serves the same function in modern America. It breaks down the economic foundations of family life for young men, tells women that a single-minded focus on career is their only path to fulfillment, collapses marriage and birth rates, fuels depression and isolation, and destroys trust in every institution it touches.

Ultimately, DEI was never just about punishing white men. Making white men the scapegoat for all of society’s problems was merely the opening move in a broader project aimed at controlling everyone – white and black, men and women alike. Once you convince a society that one group is inherently guilty and another is inherently fragile, you can replace merit with ideological obedience and turn every individual into a political subject whose value depends on their identity, not their character or achievement.

In the process, women and minorities are reduced to caricatures of their race and gender, told that their success is impossible without discriminatory engineering and that their real worth lies not in their talent or drive but in their demographic category.

This is why DEI is not just discrimination against white men, though it plainly is that. It is a wholesale attack on the very idea of the individual – and therefore on the family, which depends on individuals building stable, meaningful lives together. A society that trades merit for identity will always end up fragmented, distrustful, and dependent. And that is the point.

When strong families fall, the state and institutional centers of power are all that remain – and that is exactly the world the architects of DEI have been working toward from the beginning.

If I’m on a plane, I want the most COMPETENT pilot–white, black, or purple. If I’m on the operating table, I want the most COMPETENT surgeon–white, red, or chartreuse! We should ALL strive for competence!

Sadly, I hear “Happy Holidays” being spewed throughout my company, which openly and nauseatingly supports DEI. In turn I respond by joyfully saying “Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah!” just to see if I can trigger a snowflake meltdown.

WE LIVE IN A “postmodern” age.

If that term is new to you, it simply means that we live in an age in which our culture has largely abandoned the notion of truth.

The old consensus about right and wrong has almost entirely disappeared, replaced by a woeful ilk that appeals to the DEI notions of pluralism, diversity, and moral relativism.

Post modernism is the illness, destruction of the traditional family is the planned goal of the sickness.

DEI is racism, period. If I am laying on a table in the operating room getting a heart transplant or brain surgery, I want the most qualified. White, Black, Yellow, Brown….or gay or straight person I don’t care. Quit destroying America with that evil DEI crap.

Flat out discrimination! We all know it yet is continues to get worse. If any other group were suffering the outcry would never stop. Last time I checked, white is also a color. I am so sick of this people of color thing..why do I have to check a box that says “white, Non-hispanic”…then listen to how white people are racist against hispanics because they are brown people? True fairness is “people”, regardless of color.

You left out one field where DEI has had a huge impact, Law Enforcement. There now exists a glass ceiling for white males in law enforcement. White male police chiefs are as rare as hens teeth, especially in cities over 100,000. DEI equals reverse discrimination.

DEI is just really indoctrination at a fast pace. Destroy the American family and you slowly destroy America; if it continues in 10 years this will be a completely different country. We should go back to a merit based system. NPR, NY Times, CNN, etc. just bigots! Silly people with signs on their lawns: BLM, Hate Does Not Live Here, etc. they do nothing for anyone. Politicians that only care about power and money and being reelected. They help no one but themselves. Too SAD.

Didn’t ENJOY the article but it is the ugly truth in all its glory.
Both parties can be held responsible but I definitely lay the blame at Obama’s and the Democrats feet for DEI. I am an older white woman and altho I experienced far less money for doing the same job and more than a man, during the big EEO push of the 80’s, I’ve been saying that it is the white man who is being discriminated against. With DEI it only got worse.

Also DEI has started the dumbing down of America. The highly educated white young men are blocked from society. The message here is don’t go to college because any job you qualify for will be taken by those of color or women and women of color. DEI is a mandate to exclude any white male. It doesn’t matter if the colored candidate is qualified as long as they eliminate white males. And the white women bought into this premise. They were portrayed as birthing people not mothers. Men could become pregnant. To hell with having babies. If I get pregnant I’ll just abort the baby. We are women hear me roar. But getting a job becayse of gender is not a job tgat is a handout. The education system handled the kids in school to transition and take parental authority away. And the DEI program created a disconnect in the family unit. The thing is many democrats bought this and thought it was wonderful. They didn’t see the manipulation that was going on. The women became pawns in their DEI schemes the white males became the casualties and the children were mutilated for the rest of their lives. A sort genocide by proxy. Suicides and murders are rampant and increasing every day. Because of the radical left rhetoric. And our country is going down hill with a below average workforce. We saw that during the Biden regime. His cabinet secretaries had the DEI criteria only not the brains to do the job. DEI stands for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. But none of that ever happens for white males, they are excluded from DEI.

35 years ago, my husband was TWICE overlooked for a promotion in his govt position because he was not black or a woman… As a result, he had to help the ones they did hire because they didn’t know the job and we struggled with poverty most of the time… So, its been part of the government for a long time, but just impacting the rest of society the last 10 years or so. And it’s probably not going away any time soon…So get ready to be very self sufficient if you are white

Great article. It is so true and this happened right before our eyes. I was told years ago in 1972, that my job now required me to work a morning shift and come back at 5:00 pm to work the evening. My supervisors knew that I rode to Houston in a car pool which drove me 40 miles to my smaller home town. They didn’t want to fire because it would cost the bank unemployment payments. I quit the next morning and 2 weeks later, I saw my encoding machine was being run by a hispanic lady in a commercial praising President Johnson for signing Civil Rights Act. I wasn’t the only one being pushed out of my job after working there for 5 years. The bank closed down 2 years later.

In my department, there are 2 non-white females that call off work, late, barely in their assigned area, caught hiding out on you tube, go home early, clock in and sit till after everyone else is working, don’t do their job and others have to make up for it … They’ve had so many complaints against them. One had a no-call no-show because she was arrested for drunk driving w/previous tickets … my boss changed everyone’s schedule and made that her day off so it wouldn’t count against her and my boss bailed her out of jail. These 2 get away with everything while the rest of us have to work hard and make up for what those 2 bums don’t do. We’re all so sick of it. But we can’t say or do anything about it. Our boss will punish us. Some have tried and paid the price. This is total DEI in action. It’s sickening. My boss trips over herself catering to these 2. It’s disgusting. These 2 are always calling racist. It’s pathetic. The area I live in barely has any jobs. I’d quit but I need to work. It used to not be this way here at my job, but it changed a few years back.

DEI = “Didn’t Earn It”, or “Division, Exclusion and Indoctrination”.

If you were to parachute into America from outer space and could only learn about society from TV, you would think most couples are inter-racial, most of the highly intelligent people are minorities, and whites and males are a small minority of the population and usually portrayed as buffoons. God help us.

When everyone gets a trophy, there is no best candidate for anything. The very notion that they did it so no one’s feelings would be hurt has long been DEI’s foundation. Private companies run and destroyed by woke CEOs are one thing, but government run by this mindset sets this nation to failure at taxpayers expense. Waste and corruption will define DEI policies and since their best person for the job is obviously not the most qualified, incompetency will be on display at every level. Reverse discrimination was a tiny concern in the past, it appears that’s no longer the case.

The West is doomed because, sadly, the roots of DEI are even deeper than Marxist schemes for power. Wokeness is what happens in every field where women rise to power, when they are present in sufficient numbers. And civilizations are only built and maintained by men. See “The Great Feminization” in Compact and “How women destroy civilizations”, if you can ever find that censored YouTube video which was a shocker in early 2016. When women in power are few and tend to think like men, within patriarchal norms, they can be very successful (Thatcher, Meir). But when patriarchy is overthrown disaster ensues, for feminine characteristics, geared to nurturing children, “safety” cult, sympathy and dependence, and diverted to suicidal empathy for migrating invaders and criminals in our “childfree” age, are incompatible with reason, freedom, individualism, competitiveness, achievement. Women are to be loved, cherished, protected, even have men’s lives sacrificed for them as in the Titanic, but generally not to be ruled by. Justice, academia, entrepreneurism, frugal government cannot survive majority female status.
The real root of evil is female enfranchisement itself (in the USA, the 19th Amendment). Feminism directly led to DEI and the ruin of all values. Three generations to societal collapse after full female empowerment, said Unwin in “Sex and culture”; counting from the 1960s counterculture and sexual revolution, we are due in the 2040s. Tragically, I see no way to reverse the situation since women have 53% of the vote and will prevent its reversal. Even more sadly, the natural equilibrium, which is rule by men, will be restored by masculine Islam’s demographic conquest of the feminized childless West. Ironically, this will clad all AWFLs and Karens, the hysteric irrational soul of the modern Demorat party, in the burqas they so richly deserve and reestablish dominant patriarchy at the cost of returning to the Dark Ages.

A Realist

Lets talk about the real reason Karens support DEI. DEI is not all about race. It also promotes women as superior to men. We are different not better or worse. Bringing feelings into business etc is not necessarily bad, but the reality is emotional decision making is ruining the world. There are winners and losers. Everyone doesnt need a trophy. Everyone shouldnt get an A. Adversity makes you better if you let it (vs cry about it). And so on….

The Company, from which I am now retired, was one of the top Companies to work for in the Country for many years. The location where I worked, and pretty much all of their locations throughout the U.S., were pretty good at managing and hiring not based on color or ethnicity but rather on whether they would be a good fit to serve our Customers well. Their attitude was far more important than their color. And we were fortunate to have the opportunity to get to personally know them and in most cases become friends for life. And then, along came COVID which sorely depleted the work force and was quickly followed during the recovery period by DEI. The Devil’s Evil Insanity! I barely recognize the place I worked at now. When I have the occasion to go there, I rarely see a familiar face. When I do see someone I know, I see how unhappy they are because the more recently hired after COVID do not care about their co-workers or the Company they work for. They are rude to everyone including the Customers which results in driving the Customer away. The Company, like many other Companies, hired to fill a quota mandated by the crazy DEI rules. Too many of them do not fit well with the Company they work for but now how do you fix that huge mistake.

You don’t hire a gardener to do Heart Surgery, but sadly DEI doesn’t care.

Indeed, this truth resonates with all members of society who perceive the world through the narrow lens of external definitions. We often neglect the profound spiritual essence within us—the origin of who we truly are—not simply the outward masks we wear. It is vital to recognize who has forgotten the divine gifts bestowed upon us, including the remarkable discernment that reveals we are not of this world but rather embody the Christ within. This isn’t a discussion of religion; it’s about the reality we create when we mistakenly believe we are separate from God.

When we yield to worldly standards, we set ourselves up for inevitable failure, for we are not meant to belong to that realm. Remember, you are one with God, residing deep within you; embracing this truth is essential to overcoming our struggles. Too often, we seek validation and identity in the external world, losing sight of the richness that lies within. Let us awaken to the power of our inner connection, for therein lies our true strength and purpose.

Savage has hit the nail on the head! As an older American male, I was an advertising major in college in the 70’s. I developed the hobby of observing commercials and how products are marketed to the public. 50 years ago, most ads followed racial and gender based norms. 10-20% minority and about 50-50% male/ female. And they were family based. Today, almost every commercial starts out with a black or brown actor or a mixed race family or single parent situation. Almost non existent is the old nuclear American white family of 4 with 2 children. The recent exception is a Bass Pro Shoppe’s commercial showing a white family enjoying camping and fishing.

The movies are the same except they employ more animated characters and minority superheroes. The entertaining moves have ridden into the sunset. More violence and dark tales have crept in. All of this has made me sad and angry. Why? This is the beginning of the disintegration of the fabric of society. And older Americans can see it coming

Let’s call it what it actually is, it’s the Liberals trying to keep down anyone especially white men and conservative women because we have thought processes and we don’t do is we’re told therefore we are a threat to all the things they try to accomplish. By indoctrinating our children they get them young their hopes is that in 20 years everyone will be voting Democrat, and let’s be honest how much longer do you think this country will last if that ever happens? Some of my closest friends are liberals but that doesn’t stop me from saying Merry Christmas talking about Jesus and family values. If it makes people uncomfortable don’t listen but I’m going to say it louder than ever before as we all should and I believe we did that by electing president Trump but we have to stay strong because any slip up and they’ll Dive Right In

I, as a white female in my early 20’s, experienced this during Jimmy Carter’s presidency and his “quota” days. I went to a group flight attendant interview at Eastern Airlines and looked around the room where I was already a minority. Needless to say, I went no further. During an interview with the State of Georgia, I was told that the hiring manager had to submit their hiring choices to a committee where it was a known fact that because of my race I would not be hired. Hiring based on race versus qualifications has been going on forever and it has gone both ways. Wrong is wrong. I am retired now and glad not to be in the rat race.

Giving the shrinking scraps of a declining industry to hires selected by race and gender is what this is talking about. Of course, the mission of the Media is narrative generation and enforcement to influence the outcomes of elections. That is what they are paid to do, so DEI makes sense for them in a way. They aren’t paid by entities that want Republicans to win. They are part of the Democratic Machine.
