For years now, it has seemed obvious that when Charlie Kirk was gone, he would be remembered alongside great conservative icons such as William F. Buckley, Rush Limbaugh, Paul Harvey, and Andrew Breitbart. What seemed unthinkable is that a horrific tragedy and heinous act of political violence would take him away from us so soon.
When an assassin’s bullet fatally struck Kirk during a speaking event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, he had already accomplished more in 31 years of life than most of us could hope to accomplish in many lifetimes.
At 18, he founded Turning Point USA, which has now become one of the most important cultural institutions on the right. As Ben Shapiro recalls upon meeting Kirk shortly after he started Turning Point, “Charlie was eager, and he was aggressive, and he was whip-smart. His energy was almost exhausting. When he walked away, I turned to my friend Jeremy Boreing and said, ‘That kid is going to be the head of the Republican National Committee one day.’ I was wrong. Charlie became far more important than that.”
Wrong indeed. It is difficult to overstate how much Kirk has contributed to the conservative movement, particularly for young people. Like Buckley’s Young Americans for Freedom organization a generation ago, Turning Point and Kirk’s fearless activism became an ideological light in the darkness for conservative high school and college students.
I know this from experience. I was a college freshman in the fall of 2016 just as the presidential race was really heating up. At 18 years old from the right-leaning but relatively apolitical suburbs of Cincinnati, I was suddenly dropped into a blender of left-wing jargon and Hillary Clinton propaganda. It became very evident very quickly that conservative beliefs – and most especially support for Donald Trump – must either be abandoned or at the very least kept quiet.
But then I started seeing clips of Kirk going viral on social media. Here was this guy who was barely older than me facing down entire auditoriums full of liberals and expertly defending his conservative beliefs. If he could do that, was it really so difficult for me to speak out in class or on campus about my own conservative values – and my support for Trump?
Four years later, I was a staffer in the White House on election night, and Charlie Kirk was there. I was busy running papers around, but I stopped for a minute to shake his hand and thank him for all the hard work he had done. He returned the thanks and was gracious and kind.
That was the only interaction I ever had with him, and he likely wouldn’t have given it a second thought. But in that moment, I wondered if I would’ve been there had it not been for his voice helping inspire in me the courage to fight for what I believed in. How many others were just like me – who had been spurred to action by his willingness to go into the lion’s den of leftism and tell young conservatives to not be afraid?
Kirk was perhaps more influential than any other single figure in making conservatism relevant and cool again after years in which being a Republican was associated with being old, stuffy, and out of touch. (Now, ironically, it is Democrats who have that stigma.) At just 22, Kirk was addressing the Republican National Convention. It is no coincidence that his rise to prominence has directly coincided with Republicans’ success at winning over ever-larger percentages of young voters.
Even beyond reaching out to young people, Kirk became an indispensable ally to others in the conservative movement – including AMAC. He understood that winning victories requires clarity of purpose and common cause from young and old, rich and poor, black, white, and everyone in between.
Even for those who disagreed with Kirk politically, there is no denying that he represented the very best of the long tradition of political discourse and reasoned debate that makes the United States so special in the history of the world. As Kirk was apt to say, when the talking stops, the violence starts.
And so talk he did – to students, professors, activists, anyone who was willing to step up to a microphone or sit down across from him. He did not launch personal attacks or look to embarrass anyone. His activism was so powerful because he allowed his opponents to present their views and then explained why he believed they were wrong.
That may sound simple, but it’s an example of civic virtue that is all too lacking in America today. While Kirk looked to the future and strived to build a better world for his children and grandchildren to inherit, he was in many ways a throwback to a more idealistic time – a neo-Enlightenment figure who passionately believed that facts, logic, and reason could still win the day if only given the chance.
It was this unbridled optimism which made Kirk such a captivating figure. Even in the darkest moments, Kirk professed a faith in the better angels of Mankind to win the day. Here was an ideological crusader who would fight no matter how long the odds. Here was a conservative champion who believed that this country’s best days are ahead of it, not behind it. He was one of the singular figures leading an undeniable conservative cultural renaissance that was gaining momentum. That is what makes his loss so devastating beyond just the personal loss of a great patriot and a great man.
It would be remiss in any memorial of Kirk to not take a moment to mention his strong Christian faith, which he spoke about often. As Michael Knowles of The Daily Wire put it, “Charlie loved his Savior. The zeal with which he debated politics paled in comparison to the excitement with which he discussed religion.” More than even many on the right, Kirk understood that America can only thrive when we embrace our foundational identity as a Christian nation, and he helped bring that debate back into the mainstream.
Most tragically of all, Kirk leaves behind a wife and two children who will now grow up without their father. We should all pray for them especially during this unimaginably difficult time – and we should commit ourselves to ensuring that his children grow up in the better country that Kirk fought for every day.
In the days and weeks ahead, there will be plenty to say about the disgusting reaction of some on the left and in the corporate press to Kirk’s death, as well as what it portends for political discourse in our country. The anger, pain, and grief that so many feel won’t be easy to heal.
But in this moment, it is perhaps best to reflect on all the good that Kirk did in this world, and to let that example be our guiding light.

So very well said. What a sad loss, yet as Christians we know he is now in the presence of our Savior. I cannot help thinking that this is what the early Christians felt when Stephen was martyred. A young man who with love and boldness shared his faith. The church grew greatly and Saul who looked over the coats of the assassins became Paul who God used mightily. I can only pray I would be so bold as to take what Charlie and many before him gave their lives for as they knew there is no greater honor than to serve their God without fear and worry what might happen.
Profoundly saddened by this and pray that the perpetrator is punished to the full extent of the law. This Hatred was fostered by the likes of Barack Obama during his time in Office and then cheered by Democrats during Hillary Clinton’s unforgettable rant on TV when she screamed her hatred for Republicans and anyone who could support our President. When will they stop promoting hatred and violence.
I trust that the rose colored glasses nice people like to wear have been discarded after this heinous leftwing murder. We are in a winner take all fight with the demon party. Either they are neutralized or we will fall into the thousand years of darkness Reagan refered to.
Its not often that I feel a deep sorrow… for someone I have never met. God Bless you Charlie!
I CAN ONLY HOPE THEY CATCH THE SOB ALIVE AND SEE WHAT OR WHO PUT HIM UP TO IT
he literally died for the 1st Amendment and the people who murdered him.
…. and so, some sick coward … instead of debating over an issue he or she believed in, decided to use a weapon, and silence a debate master. Taking the life of a 31 year old man, who showed no hate when confronted with opinions he didn’t share. Taking the husband of a woman, the father of two children, and perhaps a glimmer of hope from Americans, while he showed that debate, can be peaceful without violence or anger. With Charlie Kirk’s passing, a part of the first amendment died as well. They say greatness is a quality left by warriors and the aged. If that is the case, Charlie Kirk was in the truest sense of the word a Great Warrior … greatness in spades. Rest in Peace Charlie Kirk.
Charlie was a shining light that came during our nation’s darkest hour; he rose up and became “The Turning Point” to change the regime that devoured rights, liberty and escalated racism and hate. In 2012 he created the mechanism to relieve the youth in high schools, colleges and universities of the oppression of indoctrination and the suppression of truth. He understood both the realities that the youth were not ignorant but highly misinformed, and that they being the future were worth joining and informing. Not by condemnation but with debate and discussion the basis of our freedoms and bring their minds into truth and morality. Charlie became a threat to the entrenched anti-American and he has paid the severest of prices to defend not only our freedoms but our right to have truth and discussion to guide and lead us. Thanks, Charlie, for your sacrifice, humanity, bravery and faith; all that make this country good. Charlie is gone but what he blessed us with remains to further free us from those who would destroy the good he taught us. Speak up, stand up, like Charlie, truth and prosperity are worth it.
This just infuriates us more against these leftist wackjob’s, we are called to forgive and love our enemies, but how much more can we take??
TRAGIC AND SENSELESS!!!! This was a political assassination of a patriot and Christian husband and father. I’m so very sorry for Charlie’s wife and children. They and our nation experienced a great loss.
The Democrat party has proven itself to be the epitome of evil. If you are still a member of that party today you might as well have pulled the trigger yourself. When you lose the argument so badly that you have to kill the other person, you have no argument. You have no future. You have given your soul to the devil you will burn for eternity in the lake of fire. The response to the Democrat party’s actions will be Nationwide.
My deepest condolences and prayers for the family of Conservative activist and great American Patriot Charlie Kirk, who has passed away far too soon after being shot during an event at the Utah Valley College. He leaves behind a wife and 2 small children. May he find peace with our Lord, Amen ????.
May Charlie Kirk’s memory and courage to remember and spread to future generations to come!
THE DEMOCRATS ARE GLAD CHARLIE IS NO LONGER, BUT CHARLIS KIRK WILL
LIVE FOR EVER GOD BLESS HIS FAMILY AND GOD BLESS AMERICA
This is very sad when this young man is gone at 31-years old, and I really believe that he had the potential to become POTUS at some point in the future.
Our heartfelt condolences and prayers for Great American Patriot Charlie Kirk’s family members and the TPUSA organization.
We will fight against the bloodthirsty gangsters and their bands to death!
They tried to silence Charlie’s message. But we will be his voice to continue what he started. My heart is heavy. At 85 I was a supporter of Charlie and his Turning Point USA. Upon hearing the news he was shot and later that he had died I cried like I had lost a grandson. Deep down I was afraid about America. Who is next? MAGA? The progressive’s vitriol has finally broken through and killed a good god loving human being that was only trying through talk to have us get along. To stop the violence and the evil coming from the left The left wanted him gone. It is always a good person that is a humane person and loves all people. Anyone that knew him personally had not one bad thing to say about him. Pray for his wife and kids. Pray for America that the progressives see the error of their ways. Because Charlie’s assassination is on their hands.
As sorry as I am for Charlie’s wife and babies, PLEASE don’t forget out how much his parents are grieving. I also lost my son, who was only 35, almost six years ago. It is a grief that cannot be imagined unless you’ve lived it. Please remember them as well.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences about Charlie Kirk. This is a tragedy all the way around.
This murder is a result of demosocialist rhetoric. They are the ones tolerating ,excusing and inciting violence. When a lawmaker urges the constituents to harass, threaten and menace the enemy of the cause, murder follows . Had Charlie Kirk been a career criminal and black, there would be burning protesting, justice demanding looting and martyrdom demanding . He was a white, bright patriot and true American, will be interesting to see our esteemed media try to turn this tragedy into his own fault and pin it on the fact that he was advocating for the same cause as the President, he also acknowledged the existence of the power greater than any communist leader and that alone brands him as guilty. Shame, left is afraid of people like Charlie Kirk, may he rest in piece. Only death penalty will stop the evil.
The grief that I feel right now is not for Charlie Kirk, he has been washed by the blood of our Lord Jesus and is now in the very presents of our Lord God in heaven. I feel for Charlie’s family — the deep sorrow and grief that they are now going through. I hope they find and prosecute the assassin, but beyond that I hope they find the hateful groups that are indoctrinating many of our young college-age folks, groups that push “no justice, no peace”. Have you noticed that that slogan hasn’t been publicized much these days? Not like it was 6 months ago after President Trump took office this past January. These groups have gone underground, but they are still active and pushing their hateful garbage.
And the internet cites are now alive with progressive party members championing the work of the perpetrator on their behalf. They’re becoming more and more impatient with the progress of overthrowing our nation’s government and I fear that more violence is coming and that it’ll happen more frequently. I think they want to bring chaos to a head in our nation so they can finally take over – just as in Russia, China, Korea, and others did in the past.
Will the DIMM haters EVER stop their lies and hatred? It has led to ANOTHER death. This makes at least THREE deadly attacks on Christians, following the Nashville and Minneapolis attacks. The constant drumbeat of “fascist, Hitler, dictator” without ONE true example is disheartening. Let’s all rise up and take on Charlie’s mantle!
I have not felt this sad for the country since 9-11.
Charlie Kirk was a bright light in a dark world..
A superlative apologist for his Savior, Jesus Christ..
He also wisely represented Conservative ideals..
I pray his family finds comfort in knowing their beloved is with Jesus right now.
“And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.” Luke 23:43 Spoken to the man crucified next to our Lord.
Charlie Kirk was the epitome of “wholesomeness”, and that is exactly what the Left is trying to eliminate with their policies. We need to continue to fight for that which Charlie died. Rest in peace, Charlie. ????
If you listen to CSpan call ins you can get a real perspective on Americans at the moment.
Liberals call in and they have selective indignation, recognizing no fault on their side and blaming their opponents for everything.
Independents seem to have no moral center and are full of opinions as if they know the cures, but they are unwilling to take a stand.
Conservatives who call in want us to pray for the family, want us to return to being a believing nation, following our original papers, and instead of blame or fixes, they are in mourning for a terrible loss of a fine young man.
This is a very well written article. It pays proper tribute to a great man. Prayers for his family.
It is with much sorrow after what happened to Charlie Kirk that I want to implore you all, please remember, fellow Americans, we CANNOT make a difference in our country with hateful hearts. I read today of Jesus’ words to his disciples when they asked Him the question after Samaria refused to welcome the Savior, ‘ Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?’ This did not please our Lord and He turned and REBUKED THEM and said,’ You no not what manner of spirit you are of’ and said.‘ For the son of man came not to destroy men’s lives but to save them.’ This was the way of our Master and He asks us to lay down our lives to bring others to Him. Sacrificial love and forgiveness and yes, blessing our enemies when they hate and persecute us, is the only way to counter this hatred. The great price is LOVE. Let His love be in us as we deal with those opposing God and hating His followers.
Mr. Kirk was a true patriot, my heart goes out to his family!! May God be with his family and help them find peace!!
It is a shame when you know the Socialist Democrats, Marxist, Communist, Muslim/Hamas and the Elitist are all behind this type of behavior, to try and force patriots and conservatives to be quiet!! The Democratic Party has been killing people for years and gotten away with it, to include the Clintons, Obama and Biden!!!! Conservatives must stand together and not be threatened or intimidate by our enemies!!!
I’m in such shock and disbelief of this senseless act of violence. I’ve watched his RAV programs he is truly a patriot. God bless his family.
I will comment only to praise the other commenters for their very articulate praise of Charlie Kirk. He was and will be a unique presence in American culture.
What a brilliant young man! I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that Charlie’s gone.
This is not the time for me to go off on an angry rant. There will be plenty of opportunities for that.
For now, I pray for Charlie and for his wonderful wife and their small children.
May God bless and protect them in this devastating time.
This is a horrible act against a young American & father of two young children. And an example of why the FBI is needed to monitor potential violence instead of walking streets of DC. And what was Kash Patel thinking when he put out press release that the shooter was in custody, I would hope that the FBI knows better to release any news that are not confirmed.
God bless Charlie’s wife, two children and his parents.
So very sad what a loss for this country, he loved God and was never mean or hateful when he was at places where he would speak. I hope they find the scumbag or scumbags that did this and they are brought to justice. God Bless Charlie Kirk and his Family. You will always be remembered.
Charlie Kirk planted seeds in thousands of young minds on college campuses and venues across this country and in media. A thousand Charlie Kirks will rise up from his legacy to carry the mantle. God bless Charlie Kirk. May Jesus put His arms around Erika and their children and give them comfort in this very, very difficult time.
My hat is off to you, Mr. Harris for a stellar job of writing. I never read the comments, but I so wanted to continue in the feeling that your words evoked that I read them all. I’m from the generation that caught Buckley debating on public television back in the day. When I saw it, I knew I had found a home, and that “wow – there were other people who thought like I thought, and believed, like I believed.” I can relive that feeling through your words and through the comments. God bless continue to hold the light high. Let it shine. Let it shine. Let it shine.
WHAT WILL BE INTERESTING FROM CHARLIE’S ASSASSINATION IS HOW OUR JUDICIAL SYSTEM WILL HANDLE THIS WHEN THE ASSASSIN IS CAUGHT.
My sympathy to his family and know that he gave courage to many Americans. To all the young proud Americans you need to protect yourselves and not engage in such close quarters with the nutjobs . Now find this animal and put him out of his misery .
I cried, I have never done that for someone I really did not know. However, I new that this man was doing something that no one else had been able to accomplish. Thanks to Charlie, he was leading so many young Americans back to morals and was giving them hope and a belief in our government and a belief in America again. God Bless Charlie Kirk and may we never forget you..
Charlie Kirk was a great American and will be missed by many people. Sooo SAD!!!
We watched Charlie every weekday 11 am central time and every interaction with college students that we could find. He centered his discussion around the Bible, facts and common sense. We learned so much by watching him and he gave us good arguments that we could use when defending our own beliefs. He was definitely sent by God to do His work in this world. We will miss him so very much and are praying for his family.
All true. I pray this goes on to destroy the hate being generated by the liberal left terrorists and politicians. Charlie Kirk was a man of God. He was a Martyr to Jesus no different to the Disciples who followed him to death after his crucifixion for the world. If you can see his wife’s speech last night please do. Thanks. Love you.
Shane your tribute to Charlie touched my heart. Thank you for so beautifully highlighting the positive incredible impact that Charlie Kirk has made. We can all easily see how stark a contrast to those who hate and the honest love and respect Charlie has left as his gift to the world.
Dear God, deliver us from evil! Democrat party needs to be abolished!
He WILL be missed…by BOTH ‘sides’. Rest in Peace, Charlie.
