As the Trump administration ramps up preparations for America’s 250th birthday, teaching the next generation the story of the nation they are inheriting has remained a top priority. That focus is now taking tangible form in classrooms throughout the country, as Education Secretary Linda McMahon embarks on a nationwide tour highlighting patriotic education as a cornerstone of the administration’s America 250 agenda.
The Department of Education announced in December that McMahon will spend much of 2026 traveling to schools nationwide as part of the “History Rocks” tour. The goal is not ceremonial box-checking, but a sustained effort to reinforce civics education, historical literacy, and an appreciation for the principles that underpin the American experiment. McMahon is joining governors, lawmakers, educators, and students to spotlight classrooms that are actively engaging with the nation’s history rather than sidelining it.
“I am thrilled to kick off the History Rocks Tour as part of the Department of Education’s celebration of our nation’s 250th birthday,” McMahon said in the DOE announcement. “I look forward to highlighting excellence in patriotic education, civic literacy, and student-driven civics projects in classrooms across the country. Preparing the next generation of American leaders to understand and appreciate the blessings of liberty our Constitution secures has never been more urgent.”
The tour reflects a broader philosophy guiding the Trump administration’s America 250 preparations. In contrast to recent years in which civics education was often treated as an afterthought, the administration has made education on American history and government a central pillar of the Semiquincentennial effort.
Alongside public celebrations and historic commemorations, the White House has also rolled out an America 250 Civics Education program and released a series of educational videos focused on “the story of America” aimed at helping students understand the nation’s founding, its defining moments, and its enduring ideals.
McMahon began the History Rocks tour late last year with early stops in Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey, setting the tone for what will become a yearlong national effort. The Department of Education is coordinating the initiative with the America 250 Civics Education Coalition, which is working to advance civic education and expand opportunities for students to learn about the ideas, individuals, and events that define the American story.
Recent tour stops have underscored the administration’s emphasis on local history and state-level contributions to the nation’s founding. On Thursday, McMahon joined Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin at An Achievable Dream Middle & High School in Newport News. More than 200 students participated in interactive activities designed to deepen their understanding of America’s founding principles and Virginia’s role in the fight for independence.
“It was an honor to join Secretary McMahon in Newport News to highlight the importance of civics education,” Youngkin said. “The Commonwealth of Virginia played a key role in America’s first 250 years, and it’s important to take any opportunity to inspire the next generation to make an impact in the future.”
The following day, McMahon continued the tour with a stop at Elmira High School in New York alongside State Rep. Nick Langworthy. There, students engaged in games and lessons focused on America’s founding and New York’s influence on the nation’s development, from the Federalist Papers to pivotal Revolutionary War battles.
“It was an honor to bring the History Rocks! tour to New York today, home of the Federalist Papers and the pivotal Battle of Saratoga, to celebrate this state’s great contributions to our nation,” McMahon said. “My hope is that as we celebrate this milestone, students in the Empire State are inspired to keep learning, keep dreaming, and keep loving this country – because America’s story isn’t finished, and they will write its next great chapter.”
The History Rocks tour is expected to continue throughout the year, with McMahon and other administration officials planning visits to schools in all 50 states. According to the Department of Education, the tour is designed to showcase examples of high-quality history and civics instruction that bring American principles to life.
As the countdown to July 4, 2026, continues, the Trump administration has made clear that America’s Semiquincentennial is not only about honoring the past but about ensuring that future generations understand it. By placing education at the heart of the America 250 effort, the White House is signaling that the nation’s history is something to be taught proudly, celebrated openly, and carried forward with purpose.

Schools teaching our history? The school I went to taught USA history in Grade School, and one full year of US History in High School. The hardest part was having to memorize historical dates, and I wasn’t good at that back then. However, I felt very patriotic, and loved my country, and still do. Children who live here need to learn the history of the nation they live in, and be taught to respect our nation and laws. I hope the effort to promote teaching our history with all of it’s glory and flaws, prospers.
Linda McMchahon should engage some of the TPUSA youth and other young patriots into her tours in order to multiple her presence and history awareness efforts. Proper Civics and American history has been ignored in public schools for far to long. Many cannot name the three branches of govertment and their purpose.
Here’s a thought. While on tour, McMahon could give students and assignment. Have the students research an event that occurred during the nation’s founding and write an essay on it.
Have the students send their essays to a special mailing address where they would be “graded” and give prizes to the top writers, on a grade/age tier.
Studying our rich history confirms God’s blessings upon our nation. The strength and courage of our forefathers and all the acts of God’s hand upon the circumstances that confronted our forefathers are seen through the 250 short years of our nation’s history. All children should be taught American History throughout their school years. I still remember in the 3rd grade how much I loved reading all of those blue-covered books about the lives of the early presidents. That is where my love of history began. I had many history classes in high school and college, it was my minor course study. Have 8 of David McCullough’s books which are the most interesting history books ever (in my opinion). Of course, the radical liberals ended all of that history “stuff” in short order because they think this country should not be hailed as a great one. The past 50 years, they have re-written the true history and made it comply with their crazy ideas. Am very glad Trump feels this same way as most intelligent people do. Wish he could be president for a third term.
It will be a big change for students to be presented with TRUTHFUL history and not communist and LGBT propaganda! Maybe they will actually learn how great our country [even with its flaws] is!

Unfortunately, Lincoln’s War and the Fourteenth Amendment ended “the blessings of liberty our Constitution secures.”
Parents across the USA need to be informed about this initiative so that when the kids come home they can interact with the kids about what the teacher said after the lesson. I fear that so many teachers are left leaning that they will use the opportunity of these courses to somehow spin a bad message for the learners. It would be good if a right thinking parent was present in class to make sure the teacher stayed on topic.
