Aging at Home. Living with Dignity.

Rebecca Weber and Carrie Lukas Lead Conversation on Strengthening Support for Seniors and Caregivers

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Association of Mature American Citizens and Independent Women today released “Path Forward: Aging at Home. Living with Dignity.” — an in-depth special event examining one of the most pressing issues facing American families: the ability for seniors to age safely and independently in their own homes.

The event features Rebecca Weber, CEO of AMAC, and Carrie Lukas, president of Independent Women, in a wide-ranging conversation about the challenges millions of older Americans and their families face in securing affordable, reliable in-home care and companionship.

A Growing Crisis

More than 73 million Americans will be 65 or older by 2030, and 77 percent of older adults say they want to age in their own homes. Yet rising costs and onerousoutdated regulations have made that goal increasingly difficult. Full-time in-home assistance now averages $80,000 per year, while nursing home care tops $115,000 annually — costs that have risen three times faster than inflation.

“Seniors deserve the dignity of remaining in the homes they love, surrounded by community and connection — not forced into institutional care they neither want nor need,” said Rebecca Weber, CEO of AMAC. “This conversation is about putting families first and finding real solutions that honor independence and choice.”

“Current policies are failing the very people they’re supposed to protect,” said Carrie Lukas, President of Independent Women. “Families across the country are already innovating out of necessity. It’s time for policymakers to catch up and remove barriers that make legal, affordable in-home support nearly impossible.”

The “Path Forward” event features:

  • Opening remarks from Rebecca Weber and Carrie Lukas on why aging at home matters to American families
  • A reporter segment featuring Shane Harris and Kaylee McGhee White, who share stories submitted through AMAC and Independent Women’s national “Aging at Home. Living with Dignity.” storytelling campaign
  • State-by-state data and statistics illustrating the scope of America’s home-care affordability crisis
  • Real stories from seniors and caregivers — including audio and visual testimonials from families navigating the challenges of aging in place
  • Policy solutions including innovative models like au pair–style live-in companion programs that offer affordable, human-centered alternatives to institutional care
  • A call to action encouraging viewers to share their own stories, sign a petition urging policymakers to support aging with dignity, and get involved in their communities

A National Storytelling Campaign

The event builds on a joint national storytelling campaign launched earlier this year by AMAC and Independent Women, which has collected stories from seniors who want to age at home, adult children navigating long-distance caregiving, families strained by unaffordable care costs, and caregivers seeking legal pathways to provide companionship and support.

“Every story we’ve received reinforces what we already know — American families want better options, not more bureaucracy,” said Weber. “This event gives those voices the platform they deserve.”

How to Watch

“Path Forward: Aging at Home. Living with Dignity.” premiere is available beginning May 19, 2026, at 6:00 PM ET.

Is there any way AMAC can set link up which allows this information to be sent to our congress people every time there is an event. People can individually call their representative but it’s not enough. They need to be bombarded with information so they understand how important this is. I happen to be a senior who wants to stay at home….!!! I’d really appreciate it if we could just send a letter through this site…easily and not have to call, write, etc., by ourselves. I checked on the bill which was mentioned during the last event and it said it was ‘unlikely to reach the floor.’ That shouldn’t be all there is….Male congress people don’t even know about this…we need to push it on a corporate level….AMAC is big, it can do this where we can’t.
