President Donald Trump (C) makes an announcement on changes to the country’s fuel economy standards in the Oval Office at the White House

WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump eliminated fuel standard regulations imposed by President Joe Biden with an executive order signed on Dec. 3 in the Oval Office.

“We’re officially terminating Joe Biden’s ridiculously burdensome, horribly actually, [fuel economy] standards that imposed expensive restrictions and all sorts of problems,” Trump said.

“Today my administration is taking historic action to lower costs for American consumers, protect American auto jobs, and make buying a car more affordable and safer.”

His directive reduced the number of miles a vehicle must travel on a gallon of gasoline, a move that will mitigate car price increases of about $1,000 and save Americans approximately $109 billion, according to administration officials.

The president rejected his predecessor’s actions and efforts by California and other states to outlaw gas-powered vehicles as detrimental to the economy.

“It put tremendous upward pressure on car prices,” Trump said, blaming Biden’s policies for an increase of more than 25 percent for new car prices.

Companies spent money attempting to reach objectives proposed by the Biden administration, including miles-per-gallon standards as high as 62 miles per gallon, which were ultimately unattainable, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said during the event.

“These rules are going to allow auto makers to make vehicles Americans want to purchase,” he said. “This is jobs, this is freedom, and this is common sense.”

Representatives from Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis joined the president for the signing ceremony.

“Today is a victory for common sense and affordability,” Ford CEO Jim Farley said during the ceremony. “This allows us to invest in affordable vehicles made in the U.S., which we will take the lead on, and will allow us to make vehicles more affordable.”

The president said domestic auto manufacturing has jumped by 10 percent this year.

“We’re bringing auto manufacturing back,” Trump said.

Upcoming rule changes will also allow for the manufacture of smaller vehicles, like those seen on roads in Europe and Asia, he said.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a division of the Department of Transportation, oversees the Corporate Average Fuel Economy regulations enacted by Congress in 1975 to reduce fuel consumption by setting miles-per-gallon standards for vehicles.

Differences of opinion in recent administrations—with Democrats preferring electric vehicles and pushing to increase fuel efficiency for gas-powered vehicles and Trump’s presidencies focusing on reducing costs and regulations—have resulted in a series of policy reversals.

Biden strengthened fuel economy standards in June 2024 by 2 percent annually for passenger vehicles and light trucks.

Increases of 8 percent to 10 percent annually were proposed for some new vehicles.

President Barack Obama ramped up standards and set a goal in 2012 of achieving 54.5 miles per gallon for light passenger vehicles by 2025.

Trump rolled back Obama’s initiatives in 2020 during his first term in office.

In June, the president also rescinded California’s electric vehicle mandate, which sought to ban the sale of gas-powered vehicles by 2030. He signed three related congressional acts on June 12, including one that revoked the Golden State’s ability to impose tailpipe emissions limits.

Trump has signed dozens of executive orders since returning to the White House in January, including one called “Unleashing American Energy,” which aligns with his agenda of increasing domestic energy production and limiting regulations that he has said are negatively affecting the economy and driving inflation.

The most recent order continues the trend of transforming federal policy.

“Today we’re taking one more step to kill the green new scam,” Trump said.

The only way to get all cars to 50+ MPG would be only selling all-electric vehicles. That would entail using lots of pollutants to mine the minerals needed to make the batteries and this is done mainly by the CCP who don’t give a BLANK about the environment!

Better 1 year in, than never. All we had with the previous administration, was rising fuel prices, and restrictions. When you live in places where it is cold and snowy nearly 4 to 6 months of the year, fuel prices affect your ability to be warm in your own home. So glad Trump did it. Thank you my President, D.J.Trump.

Smirky, jerky Biden was all happy to make these fuel changes and tell America that they had to buy battery automobiles. All the while he was driving in his NON-BATTERY LIMO and flying in his NON-BATTERY PLANE everywhere! Hopefully when they build the billboard to his successes (which were NONE), they can make it battery operated because it will be “more in the dark” than on and that is just what Biden was his whole time taking up space in the White House!

What am I missing here? If I have the ability to pay for it why should the government have anything to say about whether I drive a car that gets 2 miles to the gallon? It’s none of their business. We’re not going to run out of petroleum. And global warming is a hoax they’ve been pushing for 50 years.

I love president Trump when he said we are taking one more step to kill another green scam. How many scams have the dems not put out there. The latest one is they want the subsidies for expensive ACA premiums to continue. Once that is set they will not talk about it again. They want the subsidies to stay on this boondoggle. The insurance companies have ordered it. Look at VA what they are doing there. Or New York City with their new communist leader from
Uganda. Who is a Muslim
and hates us infidels. And Ihlan in Minnesota. You know part of these Somalians stealing from the citizens of Minnesota. And is there anyone objecting? Of course not. The dems have lost their minds. Kelly is accusing president Trump of what he is doing himself. Spreading lies and inciting sedition under our military. President Trump has not done anything so egregious as Mr Kelly. He should be arrested for overthrowing the government with his rhetoric.

In the mid-1990’s, my mechanic, a very savvy, studious individual who went to every engineering update class he could attend, had a large GCM pickup truck with a Vortec V-8 gasoline engine. He visited his airline pilot son in New Hampshire every other weekend. A round trip of about 300 miles. He averaged 34 mpg with this truck at highway speeds. I asked how he did it. Answer: “”…with off the shelf parts”. So why the hell can’t these companied well us engines capable of higher mileages?

I hope that the President can take action against New York State’s new restrictions on no new heating system such as, oil, natural gas or propane beginning this January 2026! Can anyone tell me where all the electricity will come from for any new homes that will be built? These restrictions also apply to cooking etc. Please President Trump help us here in New York State?

TThank you Mr. President ! Now can you get rid of computers in cars? Computer controlled cars increased the cost of cars more than anything else has. It has made most car repairs super expensive and not always readily available. A small nick or even a bump of a tiny rock hitting the windshield can require the computer to need reprogramming. What if that happens on a freeway in the middle of nowhere?

If the controlling computer screws up as only computers can it would be very dangerous. Give us back control of our cars. those computers are the single item that increased the price of cars to the extent that most people can’t afford them (not if they want to own their own home)

I love that Trump has no problem with Fossil fuels and his actions are lowering the cost of energy across the nation. But I live in crazy California where the refineries are being driven out and there is no plan to hold the line on fuel prices which are about two dollars per gallon above the rest of the country. And we pay the highest taxes on gasoline, I believe. This government spends massive amounts on solar and wind energy and electricity costs keep going up anyway. I wish Trump could boot out Newsome and we could get some decent governance in this benighted state!

From the Biden “can’t-do” politics to a leader that recognizes what’s best for America, we are winning. Hopefully the Marxist/democrats won’t pull the wool over enough uninformed voters to swing the pendulum back to the dark side in 2026. The hatred of the Marxist Trump derangement syndrome is always a threat. Then there’s the election fraud. Pray hard folks.

One issue corrected, many more to go. If the public only realized how much all of the technology built into vehicles now costs to install AND repair, they would want to go back to the standards of 50 years ago when you could repair your own car.
I saw an article several years ago that explained an insane formula the government came up with regarding fuel economy and it led to the elimination of smaller pickup trucks and cars and has led to the ‘duce and a half’ sized pickups and large suvs of today.
