Legislation and Policy Support

AMAC Supports President Trump’s Great Healthcare Plan

The Great Healthcare Plan addresses rising insurance premiums by ending wasteful practices that benefit large insurance companies and middlemen instead of patients. Redirecting assistance directly to individuals restores choice, promotes competition, and helps seniors find coverage that fits their needs and budgets. Ending hidden kickbacks is a major step toward lowering premiums for everyone. The plan’s commitment to making the healthcare system easier to understand and navigate is also commendable. Seniors should not need lawyers or specialists to decipher insurance policies or billing statements. Clear, plain-language explanations of coverage, pricing, and claims decisions will help seniors make confident choices and avoid costly surprises.

S. 3345 – Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM) Price Transparency and Accountability Act

This bipartisan legislation delinks PBM compensation from negotiated rebates to reduce incentives to favor higher-priced drugs over lower-cost options, establishes robust reporting requirements to Medicare Part D plan sponsors and the Department of Health and Human Services to strengthen transparency, and requires participation in the National Average Drug Acquisition Cost (NADAC) survey to ensure accurate Medicaid reimbursement and market-reflective pricing.

S. 3492 and H.R. 6766 – Essential Caregivers Act

The COVID-19 pandemic revealed the devastating consequences of isolating seniors and individuals with disabilities from their loved ones. Families were barred from providing not only emotional comfort, but also essential caregiving, advocacy, and oversight. The Essential Caregivers Act guarantees residents the right to in-person access to at least one designated essential caregiver, even when general visitation is restricted. This bipartisan legislation also directs the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to establish clear and uniform safety guidelines. These standards will allow essential caregivers to continue their role responsibly, while safeguarding the health of residents and facility staff during public health emergencies.

H.R. 2270 – Empowering Employer Child and Elder Care Solutions Act

This legislation updates outdated provisions in the Fair Labor Standards Act that no longer align with modern family structures or workplace expectations. By reducing regulatory barriers, the legislation allows employers to voluntarily provide child and elder care benefits without facing financial penalties for doing so. Encouraging businesses to invest in family-supportive benefits strengthens both employees and employers. At a time when many families are struggling with rising costs, empowering employers to help meet caregiving needs is a practical step toward improving affordability and workforce participation.

Calls-to-Action

Kentucky HB 59 – Stop Medical Billing Overcharges in Kentucky

Kentucky residents deserve clear and honest medical billing. HB 59 would require medical bills to be written in plain language, clearly showing services provided, insurance payments, and what patients actually owe. The bill also bans laboratories from charging patients beyond the insurance-approved rate and creates enforcement and penalties for abusive billing practices. Contact your state representative and urge them to co-sponsor HB 59.

Wisconsin SB 383 – Transparent Hospital Pricing

Senate Bill 383 is a commonsense piece of legislation that strengthens hospital price transparency and protects patients from unfair debt collection practices. This bill ensures hospitals make their full list of standard charges easy to find, simple to understand, and accessible online without barriers. It also prevents hospitals from taking legal action against patients for unpaid bills if they fail to provide the cost information the law requires.

Location of the Week: Wilderness Road

From 1775 to approximately 1820, the Wilderness Road was the main thoroughfare for American settlers heading west into what was then the wild frontier. It was our nation’s first great migration route. In 1775, legendary frontiersman Daniel Boone and his crew blazed a path from Long Island of the Holston River (at what is now Kingsport, Tennessee), through the Cumberland Gap of Virginia into Kentucky. This trail was not an easy highway but a narrow, steep corridor that early settlers had to traverse on foot or horseback, often facing hardship and danger along the way. Approximately 200,000 – 300,000 settlers used this road to seek land and opportunity, playing a critical role in westward expansion and the growth of our young nation.

Today, preserved sections of the Wilderness Road allow visitors to walk in the footsteps of those early pioneers. At Virginia’s Wilderness Road State Park, visitors can hike or ride along parts of the original route and explore reconstructed frontier sites that replicate the hardships faced by frontier settlers. More than a scenic trail, the Wilderness Road stands as a lasting symbol of American courage and self-reliance. It is a reminder that our nation was built by people willing to press forward, overcome obstacles, and secure a better future for generations to come.
