As a Man Thinks…Wisdom in Our Thoughts
Proverbs 23:7 says "as he thinks in his heart, so is he" — thoughts become actions, actions become habits, and habits shape the whole course of a life.
Anchoring scripture
Proverbs 4:23
This month’s word
Wisdom
I’m writing these words while sailing on the AMAC Alaska cruise. Outside my window, the water is calm, the mountains rise in the distance, and the ship moves steadily forward under the direction of its captain. This scene provides a clear picture of this week’s stepping stone on the path of wisdom.
So far in this series, we have looked at wisdom and its impact on many external elements in our life: the legacy of wisdom we leave our families, the choice to value relationships over being right, and the power of our words to bring life or death. Those are important. But Proverbs 23:7 takes us on an internal journey. It reminds us that wisdom is not only about what we do – it begins with how we think.
The familiar wording of the verse captures the heart of the matter: “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” In other words, the inner world of our thoughts shapes who we become. What we repeatedly allow our minds to dwell on eventually directs the course of our lives.
The Mind as Captain
A ship does not drift aimlessly if the captain is awake at the wheel. The captain’s decisions, course corrections, attention to the weather, and awareness of hidden dangers all determine whether the vessel reaches its destination safely. In the same way, our thoughts function as the captain of our lives. They set the direction long before our actions ever appear on the surface.
An old and true saying puts it this way: Thoughts lead to actions. Actions repeated become habits. Habits shape character. Character directs the course of a life.
If the captain of the mind is careless, the whole ship is at risk. If the captain is wise, the journey can stay true even through rough water.
Why Wise Thoughts Matter
This is why Scripture places such weight on the inner life. Proverbs 4:23 says, “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life” (ESV). Jesus taught that what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart (Matthew 15:18–19). Paul urges us to take every thought captive (2 Corinthians 10:5) and to set our minds on things that are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and commendable (Philippians 4:8).
Foolish thinking is not neutral. Left unchecked, it produces anxiety, bitterness, pride, fear, or self-centeredness. Wise thinking, cultivated over time, produces peace, humility, discernment, and strength. The difference begins long before anyone else sees the results.
The Practical Path: Asking for Wisdom
The good news is that we are not left to captain the ship alone. The same God who calls us to walk in wisdom also offers to supply it. James 1:5 remains one of the most generous invitations in Scripture: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him” (ESV).
This is not a one-time request. Wisdom is needed for the ordinary decisions of each day – how we interpret a difficult conversation, how we respond to bad news, how we view our resources, our future, or the people around us. Therefore, the wise person develops the simple, steady habit of asking.
Throughout the day we can quietly turn to the Lord: “Father, give me wisdom for this moment.” “Help me see this situation the way You see it.” “Guard my thoughts right now.”
The Holy Spirit is eager to answer that prayer. He does not always remove the difficulty, but He can steady the captain’s hand. He can redirect a thought that was heading toward worry or resentment and replace it with truth, perspective, and peace.
Planting Our Feet
This week’s stepping stone is internal, yet it shapes everything external. The quality of our thoughts will eventually show up in our words, our relationships, our decisions about money, and the legacy we leave.
So as the ship continues its course through Alaskan waters, I am reminded that the most important navigation happening is not on the deck above me, but in the quiet place of the mind. The question is not only where we are going, but who is directing the journey.
Ask for wisdom. Ask early. Ask often. The God who is God – and who has promised to give wisdom generously – stands ready to help the captain stay true.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
You see every thought that passes through my mind. Renew my mind by Your Spirit. Teach me to take every thought captive and to set my mind on what is true, honorable, and pleasing to You. Grant me wisdom each day – and throughout the day – so that the direction of my thoughts leads to a life that honors You and blesses others.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
