AMAC Supports Safe Homes for Senior Americans in Illinois

On behalf of AMAC Action, the advocacy affiliate of the Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC), with over 2 million members nationwide, we are pleased to express our support for House Bill 5170, the Senior Home Preservation Program Act. AMAC Action is dedicated to advancing policies that promote independence, personal responsibility, and the well-being of Illinois' older adults.

Our organization believes that public policy should empower seniors to remain self-sufficient, protect the investments they have made throughout their lives, and strengthen families and communities. HB 5170 reflects these principles by helping low-income senior homeowners address home repairs that allow them to safely remain in the homes they have worked hard to own.

For many seniors living on fixed incomes, the cost of replacing a failing roof, repairing unsafe electrical systems, or making necessary accessibility modifications can be overwhelming. Without assistance, these homeowners often face declining living conditions, displacement, or premature entry into costly institutional care. Preserving existing homes is a fiscally responsible approach that helps seniors maintain their independence while avoiding far greater public costs in the future.

HB 5170 also invests in practical workforce development by supporting training opportunities in the skilled trades. Building a stronger workforce while addressing the growing need for home repairs is a commonsense solution that benefits both older homeowners and local economies across Illinois. Preventative investments that preserve existing housing, protect private property, and reduce reliance on more expensive government-funded services represent sound public policy. Helping seniors age in place honors their lifetime of work and encourages stability rather than dependency.
