It is hard to see what President Donald Trump could have done differently.
He faced the usual Trump Derangement Syndrome from his political opponents. He faced resistance from those who oppose almost any military action abroad. He faced public frustration over rising gas prices — even though gasoline was higher under Biden and, adjusted for inflation, higher under Obama. He faced weak poll numbers and the possibility that Republicans could lose the House and perhaps even the Senate in the midterms.
Yet Trump acted.
He ordered military strikes against Iran. He attacked a regime that for decades has funded terrorism, threatened America’s allies and repeatedly vowed the destruction of Israel, America and Western civilization.
Critics insist the threat was exaggerated. Iran has long denied it was building a nuclear weapon. It claimed it needs nuclear capacity for civilian purposes.
But the evidence points in the opposite direction.
In February 2025, a confidential report by the International Atomic Energy Agency, obtained by the Associated Press, found that Iran had accumulated 274.8 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60% purity — a level the IAEA described as only a short technical step away from weapons-grade material. The report also found that Iran’s stockpile had grown dramatically in just a few months.
Seven months later came another warning. In September 2025, the Associated Press reported on yet another confidential IAEA assessment. According to that report, Iran had increased its stockpile of uranium enriched to near weapons-grade levels to more than 440 kilograms before Israel launched military operations against its nuclear facilities.
The trend line was unmistakable. Iran’s negotiators reportedly told Trump’s negotiators the regime possessed enough enriched uranium to make 11 nuclear bombs. Iran was not moving away from nuclear-weapons capability. It was moving steadily toward it.
Supporters of President Barack Obama’s Iran deal often forget two important facts.
First, the agreement contained sunset provisions. Key restrictions were scheduled to expire. Even if Iran had complied fully with the deal, many of the most important limitations would by now have been approaching expiration or already gone. Second, Iran was not complying fully. For years, the IAEA raised questions about undeclared nuclear material, restricted inspections and unresolved safeguards issues. The agency repeatedly complained about a lack of cooperation from Tehran and warned about the unprecedented size of Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium.
Peaceful nuclear programs do not require massive quantities of uranium enriched to levels that are a short technical step from weapons-grade material. Nor do peaceful programs generate confidential reports expressing grave international concern over undeclared activities and unanswered questions.
How much longer could the United States ignore the top state sponsor terror as it marches steadily toward building nuclear bombs while its leaders chant, “Death to America”? Critics call Trump’s action “a war of choice.” It was. He had the choice to push this existential threat on to the desk of his successor as did other presidents.
Asked if he would give Trump credit if the not yet released memorandum of understanding achieved Trump’s objectives, Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.), the leading Democrat on the Armed Services Committee, responded by defending Obama’s Iran Deal.
Iran is significantly weaker than it was three months ago. Its military prestige is in shambles. Its ability to support terror proxies is diminished. Its nuclear infrastructure sustained serious damage. Now comes the next phase. The deal’s details remain unsettled. But one thing seems certain.
Iran will cheat.
The only questions are when and to what degree. That leads to the real issue: What will Trump do when this happens?
He has demonstrated a willingness to use force. He has demonstrated a willingness to ignore popular opinion when he believes American vital interests are at stake.
If Iran violates the agreement, Trump will likely intensify pressure, military and economic, and continue squeezing its leadership until it either changes course, pays a much higher price or until the unpopular regime collapses.
Three months ago, Iran’s nuclear ambitions appeared stronger than ever. That is clearly no longer the case. Our military remains in the region with a gun pointed to the heads of the Iranian leaders. For all the outrage and hand-wringing from much of the country and the “international community,” America and the world are better off than they were before Trump acted.
History may ultimately judge that the greatest risk was not acting. It was waiting too long.

Iran will continue to support world terrorism and let their people suffer the consequences. There is still hate for the USA and Israel. Terrorists are just biding their time when the right situation arises. It doesn’t help that the Senate just basically curb President Trump’s war powers with several Republicans voting with the Democrats. Their stupidity will place our nation in more turmoil situations that are forthcoming. Have your shelters ready.
The President needs to be careful. I hope his attention is not only on the terrorist regime outside the USA, but also on the one growing inside the USA. I know Trump has people watching what is going on, but I pray that action is taken before it is too late. New York and California are prime examples, besides a few other states that have issues. GOD HELP US.
Voted for DJT 3 times, knowing he wouldn’t just ‘sit and wring his hands.’ He gets stuff done. Makes me nervous sometimes, but he gets stuff DONE.
Still, if history is any judge, trusting Iran to do anything positive, for the world, for its people, is just ‘whistling past the graveyard.’ They will not do it. They will find a way to cheat AGAIN. As they always DO.
And everydamnbody knows it. Up to, and including, DJT, JD, and ME and YOU.
Of course the democrats are against anything positive. This morning the Denver Pist had a headline Markets are worried about interest rates. While the market has been rising every day. They can’t stand it that President Trump is succeeding. Gas prices are coming down. Much lower than under Biden. The democrats can’t stand it that 10,000 young men applied to the Air Force Academy. When I mentioned recruitment for all military services was up you could see them deflate. If you watch only legacy news outlets and read communist propaganda they will feel bad. Time for them to leave America and start their Utopia someplace else. President Trump will succeed and if Iran doesn’t bend we should bomb the country to smithereens. The Iranian leaders and the people supporting them have only themselves to blame. They had plenty of opportunities to have peace. Just give up your nuclear bomb plans. But they won’t because their religion instructs them to kill the infidel and their leaders have decided Americans are the infidel and the democrats agree. Only they forget Iran makes no distinction between a progressive or a republican. They are signing their own death sentence, maybe not their own but of those that vote for them. They want an Iran that will help them kill the right wing in this country. They don’t think about the consequences of this policy. They never do. They open their mouth and nothing but lies come out. A proposal from Bernie and hundreds of people follow him. Nobody ever questions those people’s motives. Talk is cheap. Actually something constructive being done don’t look toward the democrats for that. All they know is negativity and breaking the country and its people. Not the migrants nor the Muslims nor the trans nor the unemployed nor those on welfare or homeless, nor the criminals, that is their voting base. The weak the ones that don’t want to work they are not lifting them up they just give them enough to keep their lifestyle and destroy our cities but keep their vote.
Theodore Roosevelt’s strategy to “speak softly and carry a big stick” has found a new champion in President Donald J. Trump. Whether dealing with Iran, the UN, Democrats and Republicans, or the lefty mobs he does what is best for America. No concern for his image, unlike all other politicians. Simply MAGA and therefore the majority of the world is his benificiary.
The ongoing trend is if all else fails blame Trump. No need to give credit for doing the right thing.
The Democrats have repeatedly said, in recent polls, that if the U. S. is attacked they’re running, not fighting. The same is true of the Democrat politicians. They will NOT do anything to defend the country. Hence the homeland security shutdown and h efforts to destroy customs and immigration. Anyone who supports these people is out to end the U. S. as we know it and replace it with something resembling the former East Germany with more than a tinge of Maoism and fascism thrown in just to make things more oppressive.
The Iranian regime is evil and would continue to attack the nation of Israel and would try to attack the US. The regime supports terrorists all over the globe. It is trying to propagate Sharia law and bring forth a Muslim Caliphate. The regime does not care about the Iranian people and would have no problem sacrificing them all if they could achieve their goals.
The Iranian people need to rise up and overthrow the regime! Yes, blood will be shed in this endeavor, unfortunately. However, President Trump is the only American President that has supported those who want to overthrow this regime. Rise up! Your hour of decision is now! We cannot guarantee this window to rise up will continue indefinitely. Take the fate of your nation in your own hands and remove those that have destroyed your society and implemented the religious police, who jail people for not wearing the right clothing. Freedom is not free! There is a price to pay to gain it.
Excellent summary of likely factors leading to Trump’s decision. The nay-sayers have TDS and care little for the country, more about their political ambitions. Our President may not seem the most elegant dealing with opponents we have had but has made mainly good decisions if people were honest. As a military veteran I would say is the best to serve under. When he pulls the switch he depends upon military leaders to make battle decisions. In Viet Nam we had daily orders from the civilians in their war room, gaming the day to day battles. The results are well known. The other key difference With President Trump is his continual concern for the lives of our military rather than to carelessly thrown the troops into the lion’s mouth. Take him as a leader any day!
Trusting Iran is a fool’s game and our president is far from a fool. Trump is giving Iran a chance to prove which way it will go and he is ready for either path. I hope and pray the citizens of Iran will overthrow the despots and take their country back.
Thank you, Larry Elder, for this article. I will save it for sharing.
I see no spin here, this a very honest assessment of the whole scenario. Good writing.
He had to act & can still:
IRGC prisons being hit
IRGC depots, yards
missile batteries near Straits active
Keep bombing
Present facts: * Iran has, does and will cheat. It’s in their DNA.
* Our political people have persistently passed the buck on this,
and except for Trump, will do it again, consequences be damned.
The American people remain duped for the most part.
The media cannot tell what the truth is or tell the truth.
So here we are, with yet another dire issue from past failures with this one difference
…the man in the White House is no slouch.
In today’s dollars, gas under Obama would have been almost $7 per gallon. Great article, Larry.
President Trump must destroy Iran and stop listening to others! This regime as well as China only understand force, they take negotiation as a sign of weakness! President Trump is not weak, he is the strongest President we have had since President Reagan!
LEADERS take the initiative; puppets get pushed around! We know who the LEADER is and who the puppet WAS!
MAGA!!!
That was very well said.
Perhaps some people would have preferred the U.S. to wait until Iran used a nuclear bomb somewhere. Was Paris within reach?
If President Trump did not take action we Americans would be dead or at the very least would be looking at the mirror knowing our country would be destroyed
Infidels are allowed to be lied to, cheated, ignore agreements, etc. Cut off the head of the snake.
Well this isn’t likely to happen it’s certainly worth a laugh. At 12:00 noon Eastern time on the 4th of July we should launch a small drone directly at Karge (sp) Island and detonated just offshore. The Drone would be loaded with a fireworks display that would Light Up the Sky with the American flag! Get it on film and release it to the public.
So this justifies blowing up schoolchildren??
But he didn’t finish the job, he half-assed it. This is one case where regime change should have been the goal. Boots on the ground; there would be no resistance from the populace. This regime will not change its attitude until some soldier literally pulls the reins of leadership from the last man’s-blood stained fingers.
Muslims are alllowed to lie to infidels…that is any non-Muslim; in this case to America and the American people.
In summary, Trump, or any POTUS that tried to correct the unsustainable activities of Iran, was setup by his predecessors-if I read this right. Seems reasonable.
If the Trump Administration had stayed focused on the mission of denying Iran nuclear weapons [and other WMD — especially bioweapons], I would have remained in full support.
But the “issue” of the Strait of Hormuz is NOT a critical concern for the US. Let China, India, the UK and EU — who are far more concerned with the flow of Saudi, Kuwaiti, Qatari, Iraqi, and Iranian oil & gas than the US — deal with that.
Similarly, while I abhor Hizb’allah and HaMaS, those threats are primarily Israel’s concern, and while we should support them however they deal with it, it should not constrain or drive US policies.
Even the ballistic missile issue is secondary — because the Iranians have a global covert ops capability that could enable them to deliver WMD without long-range missiles based in Iran.
We should make clear that we have ONE issue that affects American security and global security, and that is Iranian WMD.
I don’t have any thoughts about this. Sorry.
