BOHEMIA, NY — [September 1, 2025] — The AMAC Book Club is pleased to announce its September Book of the Month, 1984 by George Orwell, one of the most influential dystopian novels of the 20th century and a chilling exploration of totalitarianism, censorship, and the manipulation of truth.
Originally published in 1949, 1984 paints a powerful picture of a society under constant surveillance where language is weaponized and independent thought is a crime. This is an important topic ,an important book. Read it for the first time in 1968 ,during senior year of high school .Have read it at least twice since then . Always thought of it in the IFF Identification Friend or Foe category..That is part of the reason I believe it is important.Anything that helps to recognize patterns that lead to compromising freedom.is. good.
Something to have a justified suspicion about is anyone who is indecisive or indirect in their way of speaking, that is , less than truthful. It is an indication that they are in the totalitarian category . So AMAC did right good with this recognition of 1984 by George Orwell. Evil needs to be stopped whenever and wherever it is found lurking.
Writing this comment memory of the 1966 version of the film Farenheit 451 came to mind. That was something with a similar message. Something else to have a justified suspicion about is the Blue Dot that is part of the so-called Spell Check system. I am not a complainer – I believe in fixing what needs to be fixed – but that Spell Check stuff with the Blue Dot can be very annoying and people should have the option of not having that system. It causes errors for me , and makes it necessary to spend at least twice the time writing a brief message such as this . This should have taken about ten minutes – instead of took 25 minutes . It is great to keep a sense of humor about this technology !

Read it in 8th grade over 50 years ago and then again a few years ago. Glad I read it again. I have also ordered extra copies to give to people who have never read it.
Wow! Incredible choice! In my library and I have read it twice and watched the movie twice, book is better! Animal Farm is a good one and along the same lines for next month.
Well worth the read.
