Virginia’s Hard-Left Turn Shatters Democrats’ “Moderate” Illusions & “Affordability” Lies

Less than one month after Democrats took full control in Virginia, liberals have unleashed a torrent of far-left legislation that has shocked political observers on both sides of the aisle. From advancing more than 50 new taxes to a gerrymandering power grab, abolishing mandatory minimum sentences for violent offenders, undermining election integrity, and launching an all-out assault on the Second Amendment, Democrats appear determined to turn the Old Dominion into “California East.”

This hard-left turn is likely a shock to the senses for many voters after new Governor Abigail Spanberger leaned hard into her carefully curated “moderate” image on the campaign trail last year and down-ballot Democrats made “affordability” their number one issue. Just hours after the 2026 legislative session commenced last month, however, it became clear that neither Spanberger nor her Democrat colleagues in the legislature had any intention of delivering what they promised to voters.

Spanberger shattered her fake moderate charade within hours of taking office by rescinding an executive order from former Governor Glenn Youngkin requiring local police to cooperate with federal immigration authorities to arrest and deport violent criminal illegal aliens.

But by far the clearest example of Democrats’ betrayal is a dizzying array of proposed new taxes that could soon be hitting Virginians. Some of the most prominent include taxes on dog walking and grooming, dry cleaning, home repairs, vehicle repairs, concert tickets, subscription services like Hulu and Netflix, Uber, electric leaf blowers, deliveries from package services like UPS and FedEx, gym memberships, and increased sales taxes. Democrats have also introduced bills to increase the state’s income tax for high earners, increase the car tax (which Spanberger said she would abolish), and much more.

All in all, Democrats’ tax-and-spend agenda would cost the average family about $2,000 more per year.

Democrats have also set their sights on election integrity, moving to align Virginia with other blue states that are wide open for fraud. Among other sweeping changes, Democrats have introduced legislation that sharply limits election officials’ ability to remove inactive or ineligible voters from the rolls, prohibits hand-counting ballots, and allows absentee and mail-in ballots to be counted up to one week after Election Day. One proposal would even authorize voting “electronically through the internet,” a move that raises obvious security concerns.

But perhaps most alarmingly of all, Democrats advanced a bill banning immigration authorities from being within 40 feet of polling locations – right after killing a Republican bill which required anyone who brings no ID to the polls to sign an “affidavit of identity” including their full name, year of birth, and their Social Security number. There is no way to interpret this other than a brazen invitation to commit election fraud.

That impulse toward centralized control extends beyond elections and into the classroom as Democrats are doubling down on pushing woke ideology on students – precisely what lost them the governorship and control of the House of Delegates in 2021. One particularly egregious bill requires public schools to teach a biased narrative about the January 6 Capitol riot that portrays all Donald Trump supporters as insurrectionists. Another bill embeds queer history into curriculum and expands the state’s power to target private schools and homeschool families.

At the same time as Democrats are weakening election oversight and radicalizing schools, they are also moving to cut breaks for violent criminals. One bill abolishes mandatory minimum sentences for violent felonies including rape, manslaughter, production and distribution of child pornography, and assaulting a law enforcement officer. Another makes it more difficult for judges to deny bail even for violent crimes. Yet another expands early release eligibility for inmates convicted of serious violent offenses like murder, rape, and terrorism.

Perhaps most astonishingly, Democrat lawmakers have proposed barring prosecutors from mentioning a defendant’s prior convictions during a trial, even if the defendant is being charged for the same crime.

Meanwhile, as violent criminals are protected, responsible, law-abiding gun owners are being targeted as Virginia Democrats look to dismantle the Second Amendment. In addition to imposing an 11 percent tax on guns and ammunition, they are pushing an “assault weapon” ban which covers most commonly owned firearms as well as a ban on “high-capacity magazines” (any magazine with 10 or more rounds, as most handguns have) that would instantly turn many Virginia gun owners into criminals. Other proposals like legislation to hold firearm manufacturers and retailers responsible for crimes that other people commit are transparent efforts to enact a backdoor ban on new firearm sales.

Another bill bars most discretionary state contracts under $100,000 from going to businesses owned by white men and allows state agencies to pay up to five percent more to avoid awarding contracts to white men in preference of minorities and women. For a party that claims to oppose unequal treatment under the law, the contradiction could not be more glaring.

While private-sector workers face rising rents and home prices, Democrats are also advancing legislation that expands taxpayer-funded housing assistance for government employees, lifting limits on homeownership grants and workforce housing benefits for public workers. In other words, rather than lowering costs or increasing supply for everyone, Democrats are forcing middle- and working-class families to shell out more money to subsidize housing for bureaucrats.

And then there’s the effort to gerrymander Virginia’s congressional map. Despite the fact that 65 percent of voters chose to move to a commission-based redistricting model in 2020, Democrats are now trying to seize that power back for themselves and redraw the map from a 6-5 Democrat advantage to a 10-1 Democrat advantage. A judge ruled last week that Democrats violated the process for changing the redistricting method, but the state senate plowed ahead with its plan anyway, sending a bill to Spanberger’s desk to put the question to a vote in April. Democrats apparently don’t intend to let a little thing like the Virginia Constitution get in the way of their lust for power.

Virginia’s 2026 legislative session is still in its early stages, and many bills remain in committee. But these outlandish proposals nonetheless confirm that Virginia is in for a radical four years under Democrat control. Unfortunately for Old Dominion residents, they may become yet another cautionary tale of the perils of unchecked progressive rule.

When are people going to learn that Democrats will say anything and do anything to gain power. And once elected, they will totally ignore their constituents and brazenly just do what they want. Unfortunately, Virginia is learning the hard way.

Abigail Spanberger learned her agenda from the “Quality Learing Center” in Minneapolis.
Sadly, her confiscatory tax policies are little more than “legalized fraud” against the taxpayers.
very little, if any, will go to improve the lives of the average Virginian. Just another corrupt Democrat.

Well all I can say is I do not feel sorry for the people of Virginia who fell for the Democratic lies and voted these idiots into power. They had the choice knowing exactly what the Democrats actually stand for. They had 4 years of sanity but chose to go back to the insanity of Democratic rule. Reap what you sow!

The scariest thing is that these radical liberals actually get elected!! There are so many people out there who have no idea what will come with these radicals because they refuse to become aware of what is really going on in our country. The radicals are out to overthrow our Democratic Republic which has always stood for individual freedoms, capitalism and law and order….all guaranteed by our Constitution. These radicals lie 100% of the time to get into office and these ignorant people believe them and blissfully vote for them. Some of these ignorant voters won’t even protest higher taxes and diminished freedom because they never pay attention to politics. These types are taking down our country. This is what Democratic brainwashing and years of cheating at the polls has done to us.

Virginians are getting what they voted for, but the rest of the country had better pay close attention to this. If the demonrats get control of Congress and the White House again, this is what we can expect for the entire country.

What is it going to take for people to understand that if a Democrats lips are moving they are lying! All they want is higher taxes bigger government and more regulation, and the destruction of this country.

When will we ever learn? Democrats are about controlling their constituents not serving them. Is it any wonder that they’ll say anything and deny everything just to stay in power? This political party is a terminal cancer and once they’re in there’s nothing they wouldn’t do to stay there.

No real surprise here. There isn’t a more reprehensible creature on the planet than a VA Communist like Abby-normal Spamburger, Jay Jones, Tim Kaine or Mark Warner.

The VA counties that aren’t part of the DC Gubment job blood sucking community need to find a way to secede from the Communistwealth.

Let the people of Virginia suffer in there own juices for allowing any democrat to be elected. If it’s a democrat, it’s lying, they don’t know the truth, they can’t even tell a man from a woman. They must really need to read the instruction on how to use toilet paper.

i hope & pray there are those strong enough to fight this radical takeover. I guess there are no laws against lying & deceiving in an election campaign? It seems to be happening all across the USA…California, Minnesota, the Eastern States especially! People had better wake up and investigate their Elections! Surely they are upset about the outright deceit that was used to get their votes!?!

Well the people of Virginia are getting exactly what they deserve. They had an opportunity to prevent all of this at the ballot box but instead actually chose this path. And don’t say that the dims ran on a different platform and their supporters did not expect this. Anyone with an IQ over 80, or anyone who has been even slightly paying attention, knows beyond the shadow of a doubt that Dimocrats will lie, lie, and then lie some more to get elected. My question is: If your platform is so great, why do you always have to lie about it? Shouldn’t it stand on it’s own if it is that great? That’s what makes Trump great. He is doing exactly what he promised on the campaign trail. No lies were needed. People knew exactly what they were going to get when casting their ballots.

I have no idea if Virginia can recall this “Governor” but if this had to happen it is good it did before the Mid-Terms. Let the voters see what a bunch of worthless liars the Democrats really are!

Some of these bills are blatantly discriminatory; others simply don’t make any sense. And what is the point of have a State Constitution if the Governor is just going to ignore it?
Why is there even early release for obviously violent crimes? What is the possible reasoning behind this? What is the logic behind even allowing someone who doesn’t bother to bring ID with them on Election Day to even vote? Voting is not a right; it is a responsibility!
Adding numerous sales taxes to services will only discourage citizens from signing up for, and/or continuing, to use said services, thus having a negative effect on those businesses. Does she want these businesses to leave Virginia?
Is it too late to ask for a recall?

Big consequences for voting so stupidly. Those who wanted this garbage are going to get more evil than they bargained for, and they’re not going get it spoonfed; they’re going to get it shoved down their leftist throats. May they gag on it horribly. Those that voted against this sk*nk, well, “fight’s on.”
