Medicare’s coverage of chiropractic services is relatively limited compared to other types of medical services. Understanding what is and isn’t covered can help in planning your healthcare needs. Here’s an overview of how Medicare covers chiropractic services, including examples of covered services and common exclusions.

Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) is the part of Medicare that includes chiropractic services, but it only covers manual manipulation of the spine to correct subluxation (where the bones of the spine are not in the correct position).

This procedure involves using the hands or a device to apply a controlled force to a spinal joint. For this to be a “Medicare-covered” service, it must be deemed medically necessary to correct a specific condition, and it must be performed by a chiropractor or other qualified providers.

Common Chiropractic Services Not Covered by Medicare

Medicare does not cover other services or tests offered by chiropractors, including but not limited to:

  • X-rays: If the chiropractor orders X-rays to be taken.
  • Physical Therapy: Services performed by a chiropractor that would typically be considered physical therapy.
  • Acupuncture or Acupressure: Any alternative treatments including acupuncture.
  • Massage Therapy: Massage treatments intended for pain relief or muscle relaxation.

Medicare Supplement plans (Medigap) will pay after Original Medicare, but only on Medicare approved chiropractic services, whereas Medicare Advantage plans may offer expanded coverage for chiropractic services, including those not covered under Original Medicare such as Acupuncture.

Understanding the specifics of Medicare coverage can help beneficiaries make informed decisions about utilizing chiropractic care effectively. It’s advisable for beneficiaries to discuss their healthcare needs with their chiropractor, who can provide documentation of medical necessity when required, and consult their Medicare plan to understand the specifics of their coverage and potential out-of-pocket costs.
