As Veteran’s Day approaches, we give thanks to the 19 million brave men and women whose sacrifices helped to defend our great nation and give us the freedoms we enjoy today. Not to be confused with Memorial Day which honors those who lost their lives while serving our country, Veteran’s Day is a time to honor our living Veterans – though we should always show gratitude for both.
Did you know that Veteran’s Day was originally called Armistice Day? Armistice Day was first commemorated on November 11th, 1919, after the first anniversary of World War I, which ended on the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” the year prior. Celebrated by many, Armistice Day was finally declared a federal holiday in 1938, and was renamed Veteran’s Day in 1954 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Each year, the Veterans Day National Ceremony is held at Arlington National Cemetery where a color guard comprised of members of each military branch pays tribute at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. A wreath is placed on the Tomb by the President while the solemn sound of “Taps” looms through the air.
This event is open to the public, but there are many other ways you can honor Veterans in your local area.
Here are some ideas:
- Personally express your gratitude to a Veteran for their service.
- Display the United States flag in your home or business.
- Read a book or watch a movie about U.S. history with your family.
- Volunteer or donate to a military nonprofit.
It is important to remember that America is free because of the brave. Our founder, Dan Weber, was a true American patriot who served in the United States Air Force for the love of his country.
