These technological advancements, many of which incorporate AI, are transforming how routine tasks are managed. Notably, ChatGPT, an AI chatbot developed by OpenAI, exemplifies this shift as a versatile virtual assistant equipped to manage a broad spectrum of activities. But what does this all mean for the ordinary person? Let’s learn more about ChatGPT, a groundbreaking technology that took off since its 2022 launch and even hit 100 million monthly users in just two months, the fastest growing product in consumer history per Beebom.
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT, an AI chatbot, is essentially a software application and web interface designed to converse through text or speech. Its name is made up of two parts, “Chat” describing its conversational interface and “GPT,” meaning Generative Pretrained Transformer, a type of large language model that it’s powered by. ChatGPT can understand your questions and respond in natural and nuanced ways – much like a human. The brainchild of OpenAI, a company co-founded in December 2015 by Sam Altman, Elon Musk, Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman, and others. Initially structured as a non-profit, it moved to a “capped profit” model and later created a Public Benefit Corporation arm. ChatGPT is available on the web, and has dedicated apps across well-known systems such as Android, iOS, Windows, and macOS, and through API integration. ChatGPT, a “conversational” AI, serves as a highly adaptable tool utilized across numerous applications.
An outline of its primary usage:
Content Creation and support
ChatGPT is an excellent writing tool. It assists individuals in drafting emails, composing essays, papers, and resumes, and generating blog posts. These functions render it an essential resource for professionals seeking support with written communication.
Writing and ChatGPT
Many people rely on ChatGPT for writing blog posts, stories, essays, poems, and articles. While it can generate drafts, outlines, and even create full-written pieces, most people refrain from publishing AI directly for several reasons; namely the content is generic, it lacks a person’s true voice, spirit, and character, and the point of view or facts may be inaccurate. Just for fun and using my dog as inspiration, in the ask anything prompt, I asked ChatGPT to write a short poem about a dog who won’t stop barking. ChatGPT instantly produced the following:
A dog on the porch with a bark like a drum;
Booming at shadows, at nothing, at some
He barks at the wind, at a leaf, at a shoe
At clouds passing by like they’ve something to do
The neighbors all sigh, “Will he ever be done?”
But he’s guarding the world-every last speck of sun,
For in his small heart, loud and bright as a spark,
Every silence is wrong…so he’s filled with a bark
Not bad at all! Right?
Coding and Technical Tasks
ChatGPT can produce code in multiple programming languages, diagnosing issues within existing code, elucidating complex code segments, and offering boilerplate templates. This versatility benefits both novice and experienced programmers.
Answering Questions and Research
ChatGPT can answer questions and provide source-back responses. The platform delivers accurate information, condenses lengthy or intricate articles and PDFs, and retrieves pertinent data from online sources, thereby facilitating efficient research and information acquisition.
Brainstorming and Productivity Enhancement
ChatGPT encourages innovative thinking, develops new concepts, translates languages, creates actionable lists, and summarizes meeting notes, enhancing user productivity and task management.
Data Analysis
Individuals can submit data sets for analysis, enabling ChatGPT to produce spreadsheets and executive summaries that reveal insightful patterns and trends. It can analyze uploaded images, diagrams, screenshots, or charts and helps interpret visuals. ChatGPT can also generate illustrations, mockups or creative visuals – and you can ask it to edit images created with ChatGPT.
Personalized Plans
ChatGPT supports the creation of tailored plans like workout routines, study schedules, health guidelines, reminders, appointment management, travel itineraries, and more, designed to accommodate specific needs and preferences.
Tutoring and Study Improvement
Functioning as a virtual tutor, ChatGPT aids in language learning and pedagogy, empowering users to refine their learning strategies and achieve improved educational outcomes.
Word prediction
Per Beebom, a prominent Indian consumer technology media company, “At its core, ChatGPT works by predicting what word comes next in a sequence. It generates the next word over and over again until it builds a complete coherent response. But how exactly does it predict the next word correctly? There lies the magic of the Transformer architecture.”
How it works
Beebom describes, when people type queries, ChatGPT breaks text or other media into tokens in a process called tokenization. Each token becomes a number and then a vector and the tokens are mapped to a dense numerical representation to capture meaning and context. The workhorse for ChatGPT, called the Transformer architecture, processes these vectors through hundreds of transformer layers using “self-attention.” Here, every word looks at other words to gain context to know what should come next. Then ChatGPT generates the response one token at a time, and after going through all the layers, the model generates a complete and understandable response. In summary, it understands natural language and follows complex instructions to adapt its responses to context.
How to get ChatGPT
People can sign up for a free account at chatgpt.com and sign up with an email address, Google, Apple, or Microsoft account. Creating an account enables history saving and increased personalization. It’s very important that people be aware of fake apps or offers that can take them to malicious sites designed to steal information or money or harm their computers. One may also download the official ChatGPT app from the Google Play Store or Apple App store. Simply search for “ChatGPT” in the Appstore ensuring that the developer is listed as OpenAI. Both free versions and paid versions exist, with a paid subscription offering advanced features like faster response times, enhanced specialty features like image generation and voice conversion, and the most advanced models. Free plans have limits and once they’re reached, ChatGPT switches to a lighter model.
