On April 20, 1912, Fenway Park officially opened its gates for regular-season play, ushering in what would become one of the most storied venues in baseball history. Built in just over six months, the new home of the Boston Red Sox was not yet the polished landmark it would later become, but it immediately provided a dramatic stage for a memorable debut.

The long-awaited opener had already been delayed by rain, and when the game finally took place, it unfolded against the backdrop of a nation still reeling from the sinking of the Titanic just days earlier—a tragedy that overshadowed even this historic baseball moment in the headlines. Despite that, a large and enthusiastic crowd—estimated at more than 24,000—packed the new ballpark, with some spectators even standing in the outfield behind ropes due to overflow.

The opponent was the New York Highlanders, soon to be known as the Yankees, adding an early chapter to what would grow into baseball’s most famous rivalry. Boston manager Jake Stahl handed the ball to Buck O’Brien, while New York countered with Ray Caldwell. The Highlanders wasted no time making history, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning and claiming the first runs ever recorded at Fenway Park.

Boston responded quickly, with future Hall of Famer Tris Speaker helping ignite the Red Sox offense. Still, the home team struggled early, falling behind 5–1 after three innings as O’Brien faltered on the mound. Yet the game began to shift in the fourth inning, when Boston rallied with a combination of timely hitting and walks to close the gap to a single run.

From there, the contest settled into a tense back-and-forth affair. The Red Sox eventually tied the game and forced extra innings, showcasing resilience that would define their 1912 season. After more than three hours of play, Boston secured a 7–6 victory in 11 innings, giving Fenway Park a dramatic and fitting christening.

The game also featured several quirks reflective of the park’s unfinished state and the era’s improvisation. Ground rules had to be established due to the crowd encroaching on the field, with balls hit into certain areas automatically ruled doubles. Even so, the imperfections added to the charm of the day foreshadowed the unique character Fenway would retain for generations.

That first game proved to be a harbinger of success. The 1912 Red Sox went on to compile a remarkable 105–47 record and capture the World Series, cementing Fenway Park’s place in baseball lore from the very beginning. What began as a hastily completed ballpark quickly became a cathedral of the sport—its story rooted in a cold April afternoon, an extra-inning thriller, and the start of more than a century of baseball history.
