The flag was a signal to Keys that they were still there and holding the fort, so naturally it became a target for the Brits. Each time it was knocked down, someone was assigned the duty of holding it up. Eventually we could no longer spare a man to hold it up, so the KIA’s were stacked around the pole to hold it up.
