I had something like 4000 children while teaching for 31 years. They loved the stories that I told about family pets and stupid stuff I did when I was a kid. I loved all my students and hated Fridays because we were split up until good ole Monday. So I spent Saturdays grading papers, Sundays, after Holy Mass I did lesson plans and set up activities for the kids. It was a rich and rewarding job for all those years. The only regret was that I didn’t start teaching until I was 33.
When my Auntie Annie, mom’s big sister, passed away, I flew 2000 miles to her wake, rosary, funeral, and burial. When I was flying back home I mentioned to the lady next to me that I couldn’t wait to get back to my kids. She asked, “How many kids do you have?” I responded with the number 132. She sort of scooted away from me, until I said, “I’m a teacher, and every August God blesses me with a new crop of students.” God, I miss having fun hanging around school all day long talking about math with young people, and getting paid for it too!

My Father drove the Higgins boats full of Marines onto the beaches through the Japanese held Islands; starting with Tarawa. He was more of a listener and a handyman. Taught me a lot about how things work.
