At 83 I still catch flack from loved ones for telling my kids that if the ice cream man was playing music that meant he was out of ice cream. What can I say? We were poor as church mice and the ice cream truck never failed to come down our street at least once a day.

From an innercity Chicago kid’s point of view, the only thing better than the Ice Cream Truck on a hot summer day was opening a fire hydrant to cool down!

1:36 with one misplaced one. Ice cream trucks will come down our street in the summer sometimes. But I don’t think I have bought from one when I was younger, and kids were young for more than maybe 4 times in my life. Cheaper to buy a box in a store of favorite ice cream treat.

It always reminds me of hot but very happy sunny days and how excited we were when we heard his music coming down the street. Later in life, my kids were just as excited, and we loved having that cold ice cream on those hot summer days. And the driver was really friendly and nice, too.
