Seniors who watch their grandchildren frequently sacrifice personal time to ensure the well-being and happiness of their loved ones. Grandparents may feel forced to give up or postpone hobbies such as painting, woodworking, sewing, and more. Good news. It doesn’t have to be that way.

Seniors who watch their grandkids can enjoy hobbies

Hobbies are leisurely activities done for pleasure. It may be challenging for seniors who watch their grandchildren full-time to find time to pursue hobbies. Grandparents may avoid activities requiring focus and dedication. However, it is unhealthy for adults to stop hobbies they enjoy. Partners may offer support by taking turns watching grandchildren. Or grandparents may engage in hobbies after hours.

Why should busy seniors maintain hobbies?

People who enjoy hobbies are generally happier individuals. Per Headtohealth.gov.au, research shows that people with hobbies are less likely to suffer from stress, low moods, and depression. Hobbies also make people feel relaxed and improve communication and relationships with others.

Which hobbies are best for seniors who watch grandkids?

Lists vary as hobbies largely depend on talent and personal interests. However, there are universal ones, like music, for all ages to enjoy. Examples include playing instruments, writing songs, singing, or listening to music as a fun pastime. Teach a child how to play the piano, sing show tunes, or listen to your favorite band. The experience is educational, entertaining, and promotes bonding.

Here are more suggested hobbies for seniors who watch their grandchildren:

  • Bake cookies together. Young children can count, measure, and pour ingredients, whereas teens can help mix and bake. Kitchen skills are acquired while creating something fun.
  • Read out loud. Children love to expend energy, but also benefit from down time. Reading is a hobby that encourages relaxation of the body and stimulation of the mind. Read poetry or animated short stories as an entertaining leisure pursuit.
  • Play fun sports. Grow a child’s coordination, knowledge of games, and sportsmanship skills by teaching grandchildren to play baseball, softball, or a sport of their choosing. Challenge older grands to a bowling or tennis match. Or take them out on the golf course to play 9 holes.

Bonus points

Involving grandchildren in hobbies enables them to acquire skills. Kids learn to follow directions, use tools and materials, and engage their minds. Embarking on experiences together ultimately builds self-confidence and strengthens bonds between ages.

Seniors who watch their grandkids are urged to not give up hobbies

Sometimes the responsibilities of caring for grandkids come at a cost. But no day should pass without doing something fun. Hobbies are an excellent pastime, so get creative enjoying and sharing what you love to do best.
