Thousands flocked to the National Mall over the weekend for “Rededicate 250,” a celebration of America’s Christian heritage and identity ahead of the semiquincentennial this July. The event featured pre-recorded messages from President Donald Trump and other administration officials as well as live remarks from House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senator Tim Scott, among others.

Rededicate 250 marked one of the first major milestones in the lead-up to the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence this July. While much of modern American culture seeks to downplay or entirely erase the importance of Christian teachings and values to the country’s identity, Rededicate 250 was an effort to highlight the spiritual foundations that guided the nation’s founding and sustained it through its greatest trials – and to recommit the country to them for the centuries ahead.

Despite sweltering 80-degree heat, thousands stood in lines stretching for blocks, eager to take part in a moment that many attendees described as both patriotic and deeply personal. The atmosphere blended reverence with celebration, as speakers and performers emphasized the enduring link between faith and freedom in the American story.

House Speaker Mike Johnson set the tone with a solemn “prayer of rededication,” invoking the Declaration of Independence and tracing a line from the Revolutionary War through modern challenges like the aftermath of September 11. “Our rights do not derive from the government. They come from you: Our Creator and Heavenly Father,” Johnson said, echoing the founding principle that human rights are endowed by God, not granted by political institutions.

That theme was reinforced repeatedly throughout the event. In a prerecorded message, Secretary of State Marco Rubio reflected on the role of faith in shaping the American experiment, noting that the nation was built on the conviction that religious belief fosters liberty. “This is who we are,” Rubio said. “This is who we’ve always been.”

Vice President JD Vance expanded on that idea, describing the United States as fundamentally “a nation of prayer.” Drawing on George Washington’s 1789 Thanksgiving proclamation, Vance said that the duty to honor and give thanks to God was embedded in America’s character even before independence was declared. “We have always been and still are a nation of prayer. And thank God for that,” Vance said, adding that a renewed interest in faith among younger Americans should inspire optimism about the country’s future.

President Donald Trump read from 2 Chronicles 7 in a pre-recorded video message, including the well-known call for repentance and renewal: “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray… then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” The passage served as a central spiritual anchor for the event, underscoring its message of humility and national renewal.

Other speakers connected that message to pivotal moments in American history. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard reminded attendees that the Founders themselves turned to prayer in moments of uncertainty. “They asked for His guidance because they knew that the cause before them was beyond their own strength,” she said, urging modern Americans to follow that example as the nation enters its next chapter.

Senator Tim Scott delivered one of the most powerful speeches of the day, tying faith directly to the Civil Rights Movement and America’s broader pursuit of justice. “I stand before you as living proof that prayer, the power of prayer, changes lives,” Scott said. He emphasized that the movement led by Martin Luther King Jr. was rooted not merely in political activism but in spiritual conviction, noting that activists “prayed before they protested.”

That historical perspective was echoed by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who recounted George Washington’s perseverance at Valley Forge. Facing starvation, desertion, and despair, Washington turned to prayer rather than surrender. “George Washington did not lose faith,” Hegseth said, calling on Americans today to adopt the same posture of humility and reliance on God.

The event also featured voices from outside government, including evangelist Franklin Graham, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, and actor Jonathan Roumie. Roumie, known for portraying Jesus in The Chosen, offered a vivid reflection on the role of prayer, describing it as “a kind of heavenly cargo shuttle” connecting believers to God. He closed with a call for unity and renewal, urging Americans to once again strive to be “one nation under God.”

Civil rights leader Alveda King added another layer of historical continuity, praising the event as a return to the principles that guided her uncle, Martin Luther King Jr. “This nation was founded on godly principles,” she said, while urging Americans to come together in faith and repentance. Taken together, the messages delivered at Rededicate 250 formed a clear and consistent theme. America’s strength has always been rooted not just in its institutions, but in its faith. As the nation approaches its 250th birthday, the event served as both a reminder of that heritage and a call to carry it forward.

I’m convinced that what we are witnessing right now is divine providence.
There are far too many coincidences to be anything less.

Mr. Shane Harris, I was saddened that the quoting of 2 Chronicles 7:14 omitted the likely most important part = “and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways,” WHY would you replace it with … ?
If we don’t seek forgiveness for our sin and turn away from it, how can we expect anything from Almighty God?
Here is the whole verse in the NKJV: “if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

Repent and accept Jesus Christ, God the Son’s Lordship by faith in Him via His Holy Spirit Who works in you. Only Christ overcomes sin and temptation by His Spirit working in you moment by moment as you trust in Him.

What a wonderful reminder of goodness. I am often critical of our leaders in the Republican Party, but I do think our current leaders are hard working and thoughtful of the needs of all of us, this faith meeting is jus a great example.
