Karl Marx famously wrote in his 1848 Communist Manifesto, “The proletarians have nothing to lose but their chains,” and it was these unchained proletarians who elected Zohran Mamdani mayor of New York City, along with other socialists in municipal elections from Atlanta, Georgia to Portland, Oregon and cities in between. But the 2025 elections did more than sweep a surprising number of socialist politicians to power. They also revealed contradictions inherent to all leftist ideologies.
One big contradiction involves affordability, a major issue in the 2025 elections, particularly in terms of housing. But proletarians voting for socialists in the hopes of achieving the dream of homeownership don’t realize they’re voting for the kind of big government that’s already putting it out of reach.
A report by Murray Weidenbaum at Washington University in St. Louis found that in three surveyed locales—Colorado, St. Louis, and New Jersey—the cost of government regulations added $1,500 to $2,500 to the price of an average house in the mid-1970s. By 2011, government mandates increased home prices by $65,224. Over the next decade, government made homes $93,870 more expensive. Socialists decry the high price of housing, but intrusive government contradicts them by burdening homebuyers with escalating regulatory costs, and socialists are not prone to surrendering government control of people’s lives.
In New York City, affordability provides an additional contradiction. When someone complains about life being too expensive, they might consider economizing or relocating to a less expensive place. But Mamdani voters do not want to economize or move; they want to continue drinking $8 lattes and living in Greenwich Village. Their belief system demands the world adapt to them rather than adapting to the world around them. It is a belief that inverts Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, which is foundational to the belief system of true proletarians.
Then there’s the contradiction of what constitutes a proletarian in the first place. According to Britannica, Marx characterized proletarians as “workers who were engaged in industrial production and whose chief source of income was derived from the sale of their labor power.” This definition fits every working American; if you have a job, Marx says you’re a proletarian.
This definition might apply to someone like Elon Musk, who also sells his labor to make money. But some of Musk’s labor is used to build and operate factories which employ other proletarians. What we’re left with is an ideology in which proletarians who work only for themselves are the selfless good guys, but those who work for themselves while providing employment for others are selfish members of the bourgeoisie, the enemy of proletarians. It defies logic.
Marx did not envision a knowledge economy, computerized electric vehicles, or much else that constitutes the exponentially improved life we live today, so it’s not unreasonable to think that after 175 years, Marxism might be discarded simply for being woefully out of date. But one enduring aspect of Marxism is victimhood, which attends all leftist ideologies.
Twenty-five hundred years ago, proletarians lived lives that were genuinely nasty, brutish and short. The Latin word proletarius described the lowest class of society in ancient Rome: people who were ignorant, impoverished, and considered by the state as good for nothing more than breeding the next generation of Roman legionaries.
A few thousand years later, life was marginally better for the proletarians of Marx’s day. They worked in dangerous conditions for wages so low they guaranteed perpetual poverty. Contrast this with today’s American proletarians who, deceived into believing they are victims, are among the most educated, most affluent, most pro-abortion people on Earth. Proletarians never had it so good, and it’s a contradiction of both history and ideology. Marx didn’t contemplate a working class comprised of well-fed women with graduate degrees in gender studies.
In a very literal way, the attempted implementation of socialism in America reflects the oft-repeated definition of insanity—doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Socialism has a perfect record of failure wherever and whenever it’s been tried, prompting some theorists to claim social conditions just haven’t been right in the past, but they are now, so it’ll work this time. In truth, the only way socialism works is by force. That’s why East Germany had to build a wall to keep people from escaping it.
Perhaps contradiction is too kind a word. The socialism peddled today is predicated on a system of organized lying and demands leaders who are skilled at telling convincing lies. Mamdani, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are just a few of those possessing the confidence, expressiveness, physical attractiveness and other traits required of a good liar. They personify the deceit necessary to camouflage the contradictions of their deeply flawed ideology.

For what it’s worth, the Democrats make things worse when in control and the Republicans complain what the changes have done but fail to correct the problems. President Trump comes in and makes good on his promises for correction while the rest of the Party drag their feet with very little support. One wonders why the nation is failing.
Good article, but I see Republicans doing very little to stop this communist agenda. I’m sick of hearing Republican members of Congress repeatedly saying “We need to…” during TV interviews, instead of talking about REAL ACTION being taken to protect our republic. Meanwhile, scum like AOC and Newscum have taken action to push their America-last agenda forward.
I love this article. Without saying it it said people of today do not want to work for affordability they want the government to furnish it for them. Gimme gimme. Those in power raised the prices of homes first with high cost of lumber and other goods needed to built a house. Add in more and more government regulations. Causing inflation and interest going through the roof. Remember the 197O’s when interest rates soared to 17%. All government caused. Biden wanted to build back better and got the money but nothing was built better. What did they do created a pandemic gave out stimulus check after stimulus check. More unemployment more food stamps and people were living in affordability. Till they were priced out of the market. Because saving to attain the possibility to buy a house never came to mind. Americans save for their future? That is an anomaly in this country. They even think credit cards should be a cash machine for them. How dare they deny me credit when I have reached my limit. I need this pair of shoes or this purse. People, nobody owes you a living. Nobody is responsible for you. You are. And the sooner you understand that the happier and better off you are. Because society we live in today has been created by the whining of the people for free stuff. The politicians on the democrat side saw a chance to grab the power forever because the people want the government to take care of them. You created this by voting for those communist lying politicians who promised you a chicken in every pot and a car in every garage. This happened once before and we ended up with 10 years of depression. Only a world war got us out of it. East Germany and the Soviet Union took longer to get out from under communism. Do you want to live like in China or No Korea? Maybe you like the Iranian regime. Take charge of your life don’t depend on a tyrant like Mamdani. To be truly free you are in charge of your life nobody else.
Socialism promises that big corporations and rich people will be taxed to improve the lives of others. The problem with that is after a while no one will be rich except those who are connected closely with those in power who run our lives. Corporations will become government owned. What government entity invents new technology? The appeal of free stuff is great, but the long term consequence of socialism is shared misery. When I heard that one out of eight Americans is NOW entitled to SNAP benefits, I thought we are already on our way to the socialist “utopia.”
Even the “poorest” [most oppressed?] Americans are much better off than 75% of the people in most other countries. There, they have no cars, clean drinking water, heat, cooling, etc. And they are, for the most part, socialist or run by dictators. Why would ANYONE want to emulate them by electing a leech like Mamdani?
What is happening today with the Democrats and the Socialism/Communist is why we have the 2nd amendment. President Kennedy was told by Khrushchev that he would destroy us from within. We must be willing to fight back!
What is wrong with us, Patriots? The “low-lifers” Have entered this country and we have members of US Congress who seem to say so what? Obama brought in many from Somalia and many have come for a “better ” life as they say. Only the better life means they are intending to take over the US. The genes run deep in these people. I can assure you that the Founding Fathers never intended for this country to fall for any to come here and obtain US citizenship. This country has fought long and hard to establish her status in the world. And we have been “flim-flammed” with people here that we have nothing in common with!
When I was maybe 10 starting to notice things, the slogans proletarians of the world unite, unfurl the red banner from Vladivostok to San Francisco were everywhere, never after the lucky escape have I imagined seeing it happen , but here we are. The empty headed fools have no idea what they are wishing for, if it were only to affect them, I’d say go for it fools experience the life in paradise, but they are ruining it for all and the country with it.
Socailisim is one way Rich get richer U get poorer see Haiti, Cuba
Now try and make those who believe these liars ( drinking that Koolaid) understand the illogical nature of their choice to believe them is another story because the only way they will see the error of their choice is live with their choices
It is absolutely mind boggling that the very rich politicians promise they will make things better for the middle class and the poor, but their fix is to tax them more, which creates more hardship. the rules they make for “their retirement and healthcare” are not the same as their constitutes. They have a better health plan and their retirement is not based on paying into Social Securtiy with their wages paid by us the taxpayers. My father-in-law was a rural mail carrier and his health and retirement was way better than his chilren’s. They will never give up their gravy train, so term limits is the only answer to improve the system!
The leftist, socialist, liberal, marxist cult will not work in PATRIOTIC AMERICA,never, ever.Someday this”bull exhaust”will come to a head and there will be a cultural explosion when the freeloaders find out that everyone that gave out free stuff is broke and now they are looking for the free stuff that ceases to exist which will create a food war,or worse.
Some of these housing prices seen a little inflated to me. They must be mansions not working man houses. In 1997 I built a single story 24X36 house ready to move in for $30K. It keeps me warm and dry in the winter and cool and dry in the summer.
It has become patently obvious to me whenever we implement Democrat ideas, it has ALWAYS led to a worse situation. Through their lies that make it sound better, but in reality , it’s ALWAYS worse.
The liberal radicals have been brainwashing our kids in public schools for decades. The recent increase in Marxists/communists being elected to office is the product of their brainwashing. They have waited patiently for this moment to come to them. Our country is divided into two groups. One group are the elders who grew up in conservative, educated households or households who understood and knew why the USA is a wonderful place to live. The younger people who have no idea what has gone on in the world in past years have been taught that America is bad and has caused all of the ills in the world. Only some have been educated differently…or told the truth. I am hoping that all of the blue states really get worse quickly so these poor “proletarians” finally get it. That is if they don’t get killed by the gangs and other criminals who are becoming more numerous by the day. Especially in the “blue” cities. I do not want to live in a Communist world.
Dumba$$ocrat$ are expected to foul things up, RINOs say they will straighten it all out “the next time we are elected.” But when that election time comes around, RINOs are afraid to rock the boat and sorta let things drift awhile. So the country goes back and forth, ad infintum, with the Dems screwing things up more each time, and RINOs doing less each time. So. Here we are, the USA sliding down a hole in the ground with RINOs saying “Isn’t it a shame? What will we do? What WILL we do?” If the RINOs were packing as much a$$ as the Dems were, it would be a different story. Seems to me we need less RINOs and more “other than RINOs”. Reckon?
Communism might not seem appealing if the opposite side offered reasonable solutions. The LEFT has swung to socialism/communism while the right dithers.
Each time the GOP is up to bat they mill around trying to decide the lineup. Seems reasonable to assume politicians of all stripes have a focus more on themselves than on the country and lawful citizens. Our political system is broken.
Socialism/Communism is a soft sell. Mandami ran a slick campaign that had A LOT of people bamboozled!
Thanks Scott. Very helpful article. I only wish EVERYONE could/would read it!
