Trump Restores Sanity to U.S. Refugee Policy

Liberals are in meltdown mode again, and that’s usually a sign America is doing something right. This time, the left is in full hysteria following news that President Donald Trump plans to overhaul the U.S. refugee system that has been a cesspool of fraud and abuse for decades.

Last week, The New York Times obtained leaked memos suggesting that President Trump is plotting a “radical” plan to slash refugee admissions to 7,500 a year, down from the limit of 125,000 set by the Biden administration. Trump would prioritize applicants who speak English, can assimilate, and don’t hate the country that’s letting them in.

In other words, Trump wants the refugee program to benefit the United States rather than being a DEI welfare program for the rest of the world. The horror!

For decades, the U.S. refugee program has functioned like a global pity lottery run by bureaucrats at the United Nations. That’s not an exaggeration. Under the current system, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees is the one who selects which refugees are allowed into the United States. American taxpayers are then forced to pick up the tab.

Ever wonder how Rep. Ilhan Omar and nearly 100,000 other Somalis got transplanted to Minnesota, of all places? Thank the United Nations (and generations of spineless American politicians).

It’s been the perfect racket: foreign countries offload their problems, and Washington elites get to virtue-signal about their compassion while working-class Americans are stuck with the bill for housing, welfare, schools, and crime.

President Trump is putting an end to that farce. Under his plan, the U.N. will no longer dictate which refugees America must accept. U.S. embassies will decide who qualifies as a refugee, not some Geneva bureaucrat who can’t find Minnesota on a map.

The new standard is simple: if you can respect our laws, learn our language, and contribute to our communities, you’re welcome to apply. If not – maybe try the U.K. They’ll even throw in free housing!

Naturally, liberals are livid. They claim Trump is “favoring white people.” Their proof? Reports that the administration may prioritize South African farmers who are being systematically slaughtered for the crime of being white. You’d think liberals would be thrilled to help people fleeing racially motivated violence, but apparently, their compassion fluctuates by skin tone.

Funny how that works. When the victims fleeing persecution are Muslim migrants from Sudan, the left weeps. When they’re white Christians from South Africa, suddenly they’re nitpicking the motivations of the persecutors and fact-checking the body count.

Trump’s message is refreshingly consistent: if you’re persecuted for who you are or what you believe, you love freedom, and you’re ready to pledge undivided and unyielding loyalty to the United States, then America might be your refuge. What matters isn’t race – it’s whether you respect the society you’re asking to join. That’s called having a standard. Liberals call it racism because they don’t have any standards of their own.

Another supposed “outrage” in the leaked proposal is that refugees would have to take classes on “American history and values” and “respect for cultural norms.” Additionally, there would be new limits on the number of refugees that can be placed in any single community, so that we don’t end up with balkanized ethnic enclaves that make assimilation impossible.

This is, of course, a hate crime according to Democrat elites. The rest of America calls it “common sense.”

But what really makes liberal heads explode is the plan’s full-frontal assault on the left’s vision of diversity. One of the leaked documents allegedly warned that “a sharp increase in diversity has reduced the level of social trust essential for the functioning of a democratic polity.”

Fact check: True. America has always benefited from taking in the best and brightest from around the world. But every serious study for the past 20 years has found that forced diversity doesn’t lead to harmony. It leads to division and distrust – but it also leads to Democrat political power, hence why liberals are all for it.

Unfortunately, liberals have built an entire political religion around the idea that diversity in and of itself is an unqualified good, no matter how miserable the results. Whatever happened to recognizing excellence regardless of skin color?

Better yet, what happened to working toward building a unified American culture, rather than encouraging everyone who comes here to cling to the culture of wherever they left? There’s nothing wrong with being proud of one’s heritage. But being in touch with one’s roots doesn’t mean expressing hatred for America and actively undermining its values, as we have seen all too often from high-profile figures like Omar.

That’s the problem that Trump’s new plan (if we are to believe the leaked details) will address. And in truth, it is discrimination, although not the illegal type that liberals claim it is. Instead, it is discrimination against the people who won’t benefit America, and discrimination in favor of those who will.

But the left isn’t really afraid Trump will discriminate; they’re afraid that people will see how successful this policy can be. They know that a smaller, smarter, America First refugee policy will be wildly popular. After all, most Americans – no matter their skin color – think our government should take care of our own citizens before importing strangers from halfway around the world.

America cannot solve the world’s misery by importing it. We can’t fix Congo’s civil wars, Yemen’s terrorism, or Venezuela’s communism by resettling massive numbers of their citizens here. If Democrats truly had compassion for those countries, they’d be doing more – like President Trump is doing – to stop conflict instead of just telling everyone they can come here.

The point of Trump’s reforms is obvious: immigration should make America stronger, not just bigger. So yes, the refugee program is being cut to 7,500. Good. Let Europe handle a few. Let the U.N. host some refugees at its marble headquarters in Geneva. America has carried this burden long enough.

And if that makes liberals clutch their pearls, even better. Their outrage is the best endorsement any policy could have. Every tear they shed is proof that the Trump administration is putting the interests of the American people first.
