We Have No Constitutional or Moral Duty to Subsidize Harvard

Do taxpayers have a constitutional duty to bankroll Harvard University?

On MSNBC, David French argued that the Trump administration’s defunding of Harvard is little more than “political retaliation.” In the United States, we don’t sentence people before hearing the verdict, the New York Times columnist said. Ignoring due process is “directly contrary to our constitutional principles.”

French might not be aware that in addition to the joint-government task force’s claim that Harvard leadership failed to meaningfully confront pervasive insults, physical assault and intimidation of Jewish students, there’s also a blistering internal university taskforce report that maintains that Harvard allowed antisemitism to permeate “coursework, social life, the hiring of some faculty members and the worldview of certain academic programs.” Harvard concedes, “members of the Jewish and Israeli communities at Harvard reported treatment that was vicious and reprehensible.”

The verdict is in.

But, I suppose, I’d pose the situation in another way: If a government investigation and internal review both found that white supremacists on Harvard campus were terrorizing black students and engaging in racist marchers and that their violent beliefs had found favor in the school’s curriculums and in social life, would anyone on MSNBC argue that the government had an obligation to keep funding this school until a civil lawsuit worked its way through the courts? One suspects not.

Now, I’m not accusing French of being blind to the struggles of Jewish students. I am accusing him of being blinded by the presence of Donald Trump. Are the president’s motivations political? Probably. So what? So are those of Harvard’s defenders.

Harvard, a private institution, can do as it likes. There’s nothing illegal about coddling extremists or pumping out credentialed pseudointellectuals. If the Trump administration failed to follow a bureaucratic process before freezing funds to the university, fine. Get it done. But what “constitutional principle” dictates that the federal government must provide this specific institution with $3 billion in federal contracts and grants? Giving it to them was a policy decision made by the executive branch. Withdrawing the funding is the same.

French reasons that the administration should, at very least, “target the entity and individuals responsible” for the bad behavior. Defund the Middle Eastern studies department, rather than, say, the pediatric cancer research department. I’m sympathetic to this idea. But funding, as we all understand, is fungible. Targeting one department will do nothing to change the culture.

Moreover, leadership is responsible for the culture. It allowed, nay, nurtured, a Middle East Studies department staffed by a slew of nutjobs. It’s not the only department. Think about it this way: There is a far higher likelihood of finding an apologist of Islamic terrorism than a Christian conservative on the Harvard faculty. Less than 3% of the Harvard faculty identify as conservative. There are real-world consequences for Harvard’s radicalism, as their grads are staffing newsrooms, influential law firms and government agencies without ever hearing a dissenting view.

Anyway, if the school values its pediatric cancer research efforts so highly, why does it sacrifice grants and prestige by allowing bigoted bullies to run around campus targeting Jews? That’s a choice. As far as I can tell, not one student was expelled, much less suspended, for antisemitism in the two years since Oct. 7, 2023.

If your answer is that the school feels a profound obligation to defend free expression, I suggest you speak to some pro-Israeli or pro-capitalist or pro-American or social conservative student on campus and see how comfortable they feel about airing opinions. Harvard finished last for the second year running in the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression’s “College Free Speech Rankings” in 2024, along with Columbia University and New York University. The only speech Harvard values is the extremist variety.

We should feel no patriotic imperative to fund speech we dislike, which is very different from the imperative of protecting speech we dislike. This distinction seems to be lost on many.

Harvard, along with many left-wingers, argues that Trump’s funding freeze violates its First Amendment rights. Who knows what the courts will say? If they force the funding to continue, something is seriously wrong. Anyway, perhaps Harvard should dip into the $53 billion hedge fund it runs to backfill some of the funding. Or maybe it can hit up the Islamic sheiks of Qatar for some more cash. How about those Chicom apparatchiks? Maybe they can chip in. But taxpayers shouldn’t be compelled to subsidize an institution that almost exclusively teaches students to hate their values.

Hillsdale college has been around since 1844 and they’re doing just fine, never having accepted one dime of taxpayer money.
Why should any college or university be given taxpayer dollars especially when they are already worth billions to begin with?

There is no “First Amendment right” to intimidate, harass nor assault Jewish students (or even conservatives like Charlie Kirk who was assaulted at U.C. Davis)
Hey Harvard and all you other [poison] Ivy League institutions, I got news for you, those are crimes.
The hubris, arrogance and chutzpah of modern academia is appalling.

As a taxpayer, why am I paying for the education of others? Really, it all comes down to why would people working minimal jobs for minimal pay have to contribute to the higher education of those who will only benefit themselves?

In the middle of this article states the Executive Branch gave tax dollars to this institution of supposed learning for Federal contracts. Guess what! The Executive Branch has the right to terminate such contracts if there are wrongs being committed. Since the Left control this private institution, any funding should come from their foundation and supporters. The government should not be supporting a socialist institution like this. If they come up with something that will help, then the government can step in with financial support.

It’s even debatable whether or not Harvard should be called an institution of higher learning. They don’t seem to be teaching much, only hate and intolerance. The are the real extremists, and should be funding their own indoctrination programs.

Let those who attend Harvard and those who agree with the the ideas it supports and it’s philosophy fund it to the brim, why should a tax payer be expected to pay for political poison that comes out of it. Either it is a Hall of learning or an indoctrination center.

I don’t know why Harvard or any other university or college needs to be subsidized at all!! If they can’t fund themselves then maybe that bunch at the top of that pyramid don’t deserve to receive as much as they do now and that goes for the professors especially those who are indoctrination the students!! Learn to live on your budget like the rest of us have to or close your doors!! Stop the subsidies!!! That would save us a ton of money!!

Why have we been financing Harvard in the first place. Has anyone taken the time to look at the salaries these so-called professors at Harvard are pulling in? They do more indoctrinating than actual teaching, so I do not want the Government to give them any subsidies.

NO college institution should be subsidized by taxpayer money period. They already charge way too much for way too little in real education. Figure it out yourselves and quit paying profs and coaches multi millions of my tax money. Taxpayer revolt is what we need.

President Trump does have a Christian Moral Duty to protect America and its Citizens from anti-Christian, anti-Semitism, anti-Government, ect… unlawful actions, violent intimidation, enticing to disrupt and overthrow the Government, as being witnessed on Liberal Campuses (e.g. Harvard, Columbia, ect…) today. Universities who are sponsors of such deeds are a direct threat to our Christian Democracy. Thereby, must be dealt with by a return harshness as the one who is enforcing a moralless one.

I paid for my college, why can’t these expensive colleges have their students pay for theirs. Why am I having to pay for someone else’s college, they didn’t help me at all. The government shouldn’t be giving them any money. There are plenty of wealthy people that will donate to their schools. Get the government out of it.

It is long past time for this Breeding ground for communism and anti-American policy is brought to a halt. It’s shocking that they have been allowed to brainwash intelligent youngsters with the trash they teach. This has been going on for generations. Put a stop to government subsidies of any Educational facility that teaches Communism, either directly or subversively!

Amazing how the leftist institutions of higher propaganda can claim they’re a private enterprise yet demand billions of OUR tax dollars to fund their evil institution. Meanwhile, the puppet administration of sleepy Joe tried to fine the 2 largest Christian universities out of existence over perceived misinformation about the cost of degree programs.

President Trump is putting things right by upholding American values of free speech at Harvard and reversing the sinful fines against the Christian Universities.

NEVER VOTE FOR A DEMOCRAT, AND CHOOSE YOUR CONSERVATIVES WISELY!

The evidence is clear and damning. No longer the ideal education facility, rather a biased, money-grabbing, lack of honor and social idealism – plus other positives == now missing. No federal and taxpayer funding to be theirs, NONE!

No, we have no moral or constitutional duty to subsidize Harvard. But if the problem is antisemitism, failure to hold protesters accountable, or free speech, then target and fix those problems. Ninety-five percent of Harvard’s federal research funding is in medicine, engineering and science. For decades, the federal government has used our best colleges and universities to do critical research because they can do it better and more economically than the feds. We shouldn’t be forcing our top scientists to look for jobs in Europe (or China) because the president has a personal vendetta against Harvard.

We also lack the ability to shut down speech at any university, its, uh, the first of the Amendments to our Constitution.
Our President also lacks the ability to alter dictionary definitions. Saying one despises the slaughter of women and children by the Demonic nation of Israel is no more “anti Semitic” than is one saying they despise the actions of Democrats as being “anti American”.
I despise the heck out of the monster named Netanyahu and a good deal of the propagandized population of Israel if one trusts the polls. So get your pitchforks and come get me. PLEASE
