Secretary of State Blinken – Get Tough

Blinken

Secretary of State Antony Blinken is a nice guy, always been a nice guy. In law classes together, years of dinners with a shared mentor, Blinken was a nice guy, imagined the best of others. But as a New Yorker, he should know what Brooklyn Dodgers Leo Durocher once said, and apply it to our Cold War with China: Too often, “nice guys finish last.” You must be tough.

“Tough” is not a word used for this secretary, nor president, or vice president. Maybe defensive, reactive, occasionally angry, but not calm, consistent, and confident dealing with adversaries.

But this is where rubber meets road. To deter China – and Iran, North Korea, Russia, the Taliban, ISIS, al Qaeda, and all who want to bring down America – we have to be blunt, put consequences with threats, stand tall, mean what we say, say what we mean.

For context, during most of our nation’s history, when the going got rough, America was blunt, determined, unwavering, and resolved to deter war, or that was impossible, win. In the leadup to every war – Revolutionary, 1812, Spanish-American, WWI, WWII, Korean, Vietnam, Gulf I, Iraq, Afghanistan, and in all other conflicts, as well as our devastating Civil War and anti-Soviet Cold War – we have sought to be clear early, about risks, consequences, and our resolve.

Put differently, no pre-war American president or secretary has minced words about the seriousness of an impending conflict. No wartime leader has ignored reality or chance to deter. To imagine a false peace, more commonality than exists, or imagine good motives for bad, is to disserve peace. To pretend a conflict is less serious than it is creates ambiguity, invites conflict.

Look at our record – and you will see that pre-war and during wars, both hot and cold, we have been fortunate to have leaders who, more often than not, who did not flinch. From Washington (Revolution), Jefferson (Barbary Pirates), Madison (1812), Lincoln (Civil War), McKinley (Spanish-American), TR (Great White Fleet, Nobel Peace Prize, efforts to prevent WWI), and Wilson (WWI), to FDR, Truman, Ike, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Reagan, Bush 41 and 43, we have doggedly made clear that we did not want a war, but that if one came – we aimed to win.

This is precisely what is missing in our dialogue with China. Tony Blinken’s recent trip to China drove the point home. In photos he looks uneasy, even scared, hardly ready, confident, or at ease with America’s innate military and moral strength, intentionally, silently messaging resolve.

Instead, he conveyed wishful words, hoped for the best, told China he did not like their surveillance balloons, then denied a “Cold War” – saying that is just a “bumper sticker.” Blinken soft-shoed the notion of conflict with China, contradicting career generals, who say be ready.

Instead, my old friend keeps imagining China – and Iran, and Afghanistan, and North Korea, and others – the way he wishes them to be, good not bad, like us not unlike us.  He is sure things will work out, says we are just in “vigorous competition,” adding he is not “shy” about that.

Blinken is a good guy, he is. In classrooms, dinner and casual settings, talking policy, politics, diplomacy, and – although he tended to avoid the topic – war, he was always polite, even genteel, keeps a napkin under his glass. He did not raise his voice, or bring down a fist.

Blinken is the kind of diplomat who envisions peace, imagines that all want it, works on that premise, thinks we can get along. He wants to believe war is a thing of the past, avoid the thought. It is not. Irony is, only be imagining the worst and preparing to win, do you prevent war.

That is true of the horrors which would attend war with China, or “version two” of a global war with terrorists, or any future conflict with Iran, North Korea, any who disrespect freedom.

Only by stepping up, talking straight, offending if you must, convincing by authentic belief, and preparing for the possibility of a war – taking actions that match hard words – do you sometimes turn the whole dial, get the world to regain its senses, back in order, demonstrate real diplomacy.

In short, while being nice, thoughtful, gentle, kind, and respectful is how we hope to treat each other, how we try to live as Americans, what we are taught keeps peace, that is not how the world always works. To deter adversaries – and win if we must – requires candor.

Shouting and stamping is not necessary, but soft-pedaling hard reality is bad. Theodore Roosevelt said peace is best kept when you “talk softly and carry a big stick,” but the Dodgers manager might have been a good diplomat. In wars cold and hot, too often “nice guys finish last.” China needs to know we are onto their game, will not tolerate it, do not want a conflict, but will win if one comes.

Robert Charles is a former Assistant Secretary of State under Colin Powell, former Reagan and Bush 41 White House staffer, attorney, and naval intelligence officer (USNR). He wrote “Narcotics and Terrorism” (2003), “Eagles and Evergreens” (2018), and is National Spokesman for AMAC.

Absolutely correct. Can’t look scared around those guys or act scared. Stand up for your country and tell them like it is or get the hell out of leadership. You are not a leader.

Pompeo seems to fit your “required” description much better than Blinken does. This whole administration, Biden especially, “imagines” themselves to be tough guys but in reality are more the “wet their pants” types when confronted.

Blinken is not a nice guy, Blinken is weak. Right along with Brandon. For they have to follow the orders of those who got them in the White House. Who ever saw a president of the United States go to a foreign country and says you are in my heart and calls his people back home fascists, nazis, insurrectionists. And allows a Chinese spy balloon drifting over our country for 8 days.
Tell Xi where to get off, not wait till Xi acts, be proactive and tell them the consequences for their actions.
Get a back bone. And find some love for America and it’s people.

Blinker is incompetent woke moron. The dangerous world we live in requires the guy like real President Trump. The guy our enemies fear and friends respect, the guy with balls. No one respects nor fears Biden, the world knows he is corrupt and illegitimate, and so is this entire administration.

Absolutely agree 100%. Excellent article and well said regarding this issue. We need a leader who is determined to win, says it like it is and doesn’t back down to tyrants at all. They are bullies and will continue to bully until they are stopped one way or the other.

Did Blinken get everyone’s pronouns correct? Does everyone agree that America is a racist nation whose greatness was built on slavery? Tact and diplomacy and the safety of America’s citizens do not matter any more according to the democrats.

We all knew where this was going when Blinken and crew allowed the Chinese to INSULT us on US soil at the very start of Loser Joe’s term and made ZERO response to the ChiComs. Zelenskyy is now RUNNING our country as well as his. He TELLS Biden what to do, and Slow joe does it.

Blinky has risen far beyond his competence level and thats why he’s useful to the demon party. The article includes the monster johnson who did more than any 20th century president to destroy this country. The rotten sob sacrificed tens of thousands on the altar of his ego. The debacle of vietnam ruined what was left of faith in govt with lbj picking targets and rejecting others from dc. What a scumbag. A sewage treatment facility should be built on his grave.

I find it humorous that you mention Washington as a “tough leader” when it was that great man that said Americans should never go abroad looking for enemies.
Blinkin yesterday laughingly reported that he told the Chinese that supplying Russia with arms would be “crossing a red line”. Imagine that, a modern day American leader telling any other country to not supply any other country with weaponry when the United States does little else that supply a vast array of countries with arms to seat or unseat leadership so as to force those nations to kow tow to American desires.
Blinkin is a fool and the United States is lost. We have built a woke military that requires in field safe spaces so as to accommodate the sensitivities of the pronoun confused enlistees of which even they are hard to persuade to join our uniformed civilian killer organizations.
God I hope Russia b*tch slaps America back to reality and shows us for the first time in some 80 years that we are not the moral deity of the world and that we should drop the “speak harshly and carry a big cluster bomb” foreign policy ideology.

Charles raises one small part of the Asian/China situation, but as so many have in our history misses the point. U.S. has been almost since it’s inception a Pacific Rim Nation. It has also rejected accepting nor understanding that position. I recollect only a very few of our leaders who have been able to deal with the East. Teddy Roosevelt comes to mind as an early one, Douglas McArthur a more recent one. To approach the Chinese leadership without a conceptual understanding of that culture and history is to be led as lambs to the slaughter. Blinken has from the onset displayed an almost inane lack of understanding and is and will be a serious detriment to our world position. There appears to be not one capable mind in State or in the remainder of the present administration.

“Tough” is not a word to describe Blinken? Secretary of Transportation is also a term that does not describe Blinken. Words that do describe Blinken are: incompetent, incapable, can’t handle the job, typical demo/socialist, no concern for America, no clue. Just another typical Biden appointee. His skills might include cleaning out the white house rest rooms.

Ah yes! China is shaking in its shoes!! Well we’ll show them doggone it. We’ll walk over to our stack of previously printed and prepared strongly worded letters and fire on of those off to them! we’ll warn them of the consequences of their proposed actions. By golly, that’ll make them sit up straight and tremble! [And then then they’ll just go ahead and do what ever they want to do because they fully understand the lack of commitment and strength of the current administration.]

Appeasement never works, just ask Neville Chamberlain. It’s hard for the military to prepare for war when President Obambam took great strides in purging our military of all it’s top Generals and Admiral’s then replaced them with yes men who are more worried about using the proper pronoun than doing their job’s preparing for war.

The southern boarder has been wide open for several years with millions of illegal aliens including Chinese coming across the boarder. The John Birch Society warned us back in the late seventies, early eighties that foreign adversaries were planning to infiltrate our country and attack us from within. They gave scenarios how major bridges would be blocked, electrical infrastructure would be attacked, trains derailed and critical factory’s such as metallurgy and chemical would all be destroyed within day’s or months of each other.

Has anyone watched the news lately? One of by biggest fears is waking up some morning and finding out all hell is breaking loose, then coming to the realization that people like demented joe and General Milly are the ones in charge of things. It would take them a full week to determine that things were actually the way they were.

If this country comes out of a conflict with China unscathed it will be a miracle. I believe if the Birch Society was correct, then China’s Xi is the conductor of this orchestra and there are possibly millions of foreign players already in our country, waiting for the order to go!

I pray I’m wrong…may God continue to bless the USA.

I just spent probably an hour listening to an infommercial you sent about Pure Health Joint Support Supplements. It started by telling me the solution to joint comfort was likely in my garbage. It ended with an expensive supplement that needed a patented process to turn the garbage into a supplement I should buy a huge supply of to be sure it was available. I resent receiving such videos that I cannot tell how long will run that lures me into wasting that much time for just another pill ad. Shame on AMAC for subjecting its members to such a thing.

Mr. Charles,Your article is very well thought out, and characterizes the pacifist dreams of the misguided liberal US Presidents, and their policy makers begining with Clinton, and currently Joe Biden’s puppet masters.During these troubling times, Mr. Blinken and associates should be sent home, and replaced by someone who believes in Peace through Strength, the Greatness of American, and protections of our allies. It is apparent that neither Joe Biden, nor Kamala Harris are really in charge of the White House, and of course National and World Policies.American has been duped, and we need Change.Jon Newsom
