Tariffs—taxes on imported goods—have been a feature of U.S. trade policy since the nation’s founding, and supplied the bulk of government revenue for years, until income tax. During the Civil War in 1861, the first federal income tax was created to finance the war effort. This imposed tax effort was repealed ten years later. But in 1913, the Sixteenth Amendment to the Constitution was ratified, granting Congress the power to taxing personal income the law of the land.
For a number of years now, the average weighted tariff on foreign products coming into the U.S. has been 1.5%, yet the average tariff on U.S. products globally has been 6%. President Trump promised to bring those numbers closer to balance. These recent tariffs are a step toward accomplishing that goal.
Because the U.S. has set low tariffs on foreign goods in the past, foreign countries generally have not reciprocated, allowing them to flood the American market with cheap goods while keeping high, protective tariffs on their own markets. President Trump’s return to common sense, reciprocal trade protections will strengthen industry in the United States.
If tariffs are so bad, how did Joe Bama handle them. When Biden took office in 2021, he gleefully tore up most of Trump’s policies. The border was thrown wide open, the Paris Climate Accord rejoined, and the Keystone XL pipeline was canceled. But the one thing Biden didn’t touch was Trump’s China tariffs.
Recently an economic journalist, Brianna Lyman stated, “Donald Trump is using tariffs to protect our national interests and when Donald Trump does it, it’s decried as … an economic disaster by the same people who ignored the economic disaster under Joe Biden. But when Canada implements a 245.5 percent tariff on [U.S.] cheese, 277 percent on [U.S.] ice cream and 298.5 [percent] on [U.S.] butter, it’s about ‘protecting your national interest.’”
Tariffs can also serve non-economic purposes. They can be instruments to apply international pressure. That pressure can be used to achieve compliance of a demand the U.S. places on a foreign nation. Take for example when Columbia rejected two U.S. military planes full of repatriated illegal immigrants, President Trump responded by threatening to immediately impose a 25% tariff on all Columbian goods. Within hours, Columbia’s president folded like a rusty old lawn chair.
It is premature to criticize Trump’s tariffs before we have even seen what they are, on which products they are imposed, and what their ends are. A closer examination shows that critics’ claims about Trump tariffs are not about the facts behind tariffs, but are all about their opposition to, and hatred of him.

President Trumps use of tariffs is nothing short of brilliant. He is getting win after win for America with little to no effort. We now have a 98%. closed border and billions of dollars coming in as a result of the fair and reciprocal tariffs he already has in place. President Trump’s goal is to eliminate the income tax and our horrendous debt using a sensible tariff structure and he will absolutely accomplish it. America did very well before the income tax, we had roads, bridges, schools, a thriving middle class and minimal national debt. After the income tax, Congress got the idea that they had a limitless supply of money and could spend, waste, steal and borrow to their hearts content something that has to end.

It is interesting, While all economic models say that lowering tariffs makes the economy better – economies so the best prices permeate the market. It only works (economically) if all countries abide by the same rules. They do not, especially China, S Korea, and to a slightly lesser extent India. Our balance of trade (outflow of money to other countries) has not been positive for decades and this hurts us in the long run. The old model has been proven to be a failure, with the only clear winner being corruption in the Federal Government elected and appointed officials including the State Department.

Tariffs, or a new “External Revenue Service, as President Trump refers to them, are how our country existed and thrived until 1933. It will most assuredly work again, but will take time to implement. Please realize that tariffs only began being used on March 4th. It will take time for the money to start flowing in and there will most certainly be pain in the interim, but it will be worth every wince!

Other countries needed to be shown the US is not a financial “sugar daddy ‘ to be drained endlessly without some return from them. Unfortunately they forgot that and needed a resounding reminder. While the tariffs are that reminder, I remain a little nervous of what it will do to inflation. Just this week, we’re seeing our legislature try to impose a $10 fee on every prescription from pharmacies AND my worthless blue city city council impose a 3-cent/gallon gasoline tax, all while we’re still reeling from Biden’s massive inflation. The politicians refuse to do logical things like adopt some version of medicaid since those are the counties that pharmacies are closing, or negotiate better pricing from drug suppliers, or pass a lottery to cover medical needs of the poor. Instead they attack the middle class – again, who will get NEGATIVE return. Just last year local property taxes went up $50/month to fund schools that have ranked 46-50th the past 70 years, while paying the superintendent a quarter of a million $ plus perks. Fed up with it, and ready to see Trump cut every dime of DEI and other liberal $ Biden poured into this mess around here. As for the tariffs, skeptical, but hopeful.

Donald Trump is willing to do the hard things. He’s not worried about stuffing his pockets like the last Administrations.
If we continue to be strong Americans we will weather this squall, I wouldn’t even call it a storm. Even today, countries are buckling and aligning as they should to president Trump’s toughness. That being said, the facility that I currently work for has picked up work from Taiwan. An American company bringing New production home. Set up should be starting shortly, and because of president Trump’s policies… this is happening.
Stop whining and looking for the status quo or instant gratification, get tough and we will see how a great we can be again. Last time I checked, this is United States of America not Europe. After his first term being one, a newby and two, way too trusting of the politi-critters he was surrounded by, has used the four years of fiden to get his attitude right for the job he is doing now. Of course getting shot at helps adjust ones attitude, I suppose. As usual your answers are off. Tariffs were the source of revenue for decades. The purpose is to encourage manufacturing, cultivation and using our own resources. What is and was illegal was the Federal Reserve Act of 1913. It in itself was a backdoor deal, voted on by a select few and signed into law on December 23, 1913. Losing the ability to control our own currency and allowing a private entity to create the revenue service that enslaved us.

These tariffs are nothing new. It’s how the USA generated wealth before the federal reserve was illegally implemented & strongarmed congress to help it stand up. The opposition which included some of the richest men at that time, were systematically silenced (whacked) so they could not oppose the plan for financial control of all US finances at the turn of the 20th century.
Tariffs will bring in what we need to sustain and grow, relieving the average citizen from a corrupt tax system, which has never really funded anything but the pockets of the corrupt, channeling first through the crown. yes, I said crown & trickling percentages back into those who we (supposedly) elected to represent us. (why we now have DOGE)
From my research, the only tax we will be responsible for is through purchases of newly manufactured OTS products, both large and small. New automobiles (17% +/-) are taxed & pre-owned automobiles (Zip, Zero, Nada) tax.
So will be the same with food, medical, services, etc. Yes, Tariffs will be the proper and restored standard, so that all these billions that have been stolen from “We The People” (watch DOGE) will once again & finally be used for the betterment of “We The People”
We must allow this seasoned sting operation to play out so that the people can digest the drip, drip, drip of information. Much of what will be exposed has already been played out with the help of central casting now, the people can see what we all almost fell into.
Trust The Plan! It’s God’s plan. The devil can no longer spread its centuries of lies. From Dark to Light!

Tariffs were set up to protect American manufacturing by having foreign made goods cost close to what the American made good would. Other countries actually do this, look at some of the tariffs that China and other countries add to American manufactured good if they even allow American made goods to be imported. Look at what passes for our government has done to destroy American manufacturing. They have a minimum wage which is higher then foreign countries, some states such as CT have a minimum wage more than double the federal minimum wage and wonder why companies leave the state, Then the government keeps the tariffs low to keep foreign goods and foreign businesses operating at the expense of American manufacturers they companies they are supposed to protect. So yes I support what Trump is doing and I hope it continues to Make America Great Again. Also I would like to look at the personal finances of all our elected public SERVANTS and other appointed SERVANTS and see how much stock they have in the foreign companies they are protecting with a high American Minimum wage and low tariffs.

We pay for federal government in mostly 3 ways: inflation, income tax, and tariffs. Inflation hurts the poor more than any other tax. The poor are fooled and misled by politicians that use them as pawns. Tariff’s are the only tax you get to pay by choice. If you don’t want to pay them, buy something else.
The anti tarrif (anti U.S.) crowd will showcase all the sob stories they can find to get your sympathy. Want to know who needs your sympathies? The 100,000 a year who die from drug overdoses and their families.
I’m all in on tariffs. The business I ran for 34 years was destroyed by all the industries that fled our country during the 80s, 90s and well into the 21st century. Everything manufactured in the greater Cleveland area went out of business or moved to foreign soil. We need our manufacturing if we’re to remain a Super Power.
Time to realize Trump will be Trump.
President Trump is, wait for it… PRESIDENT!
Read the book. This is Trump in his element.
After his first term being one, a newby and two, way too trusting of the politi-critters he was surrounded by, has used the four years of fiden to get his attitude right for the job he is doing now. Of course getting shot at helps adjust ones attitude, I suppose. But when it all gets tallied I am extremely happy to see our President is now operating with a team that can and hopefully will put the swamp thru the wood chipper that feeds the biomass furnaces. Turn the corrupt political pollution into air pollution.
Too harsh? NO! Hell NO!
Other countries impose tariffs on goods they import from us, so seems fair to me to do the same to them!
Tariffs will set us free
We need to be patient and not expect immediate results. It took 4 years for Biden to totally mess up our country. Let’s give Trump some time to reverse it, even if it causes temporary pain. He has a great team and will accomplish good things.
America needs to stop being the world police and take care of Americans first.
To set things right, we are going to suffer some ups and down. We have to stand strong. Letting things continue with status quo is committing national suicide.
I support Trump’s tactics for using tariffs. He’s not allowing other countries run over us and mistreat us and continue to take advantage of us anymore, including trade, border security, immigration, drugs, smuggling, human trafficking, etc.
No pain, no gain! Our allies and the UN have operated like soft enemies for decades using social and cultural warfare tactics to strategically erode and weaken America! They’re taking advantage of us. By bending a knee to our allies and committing financial fraud for kickbacks our government, mostly Democrats have caused more harm to American citizens than Russia, China, Iran and North Korea. Our tax thieving government is the enemy within! Use the tariffs! It’s time to play hardball! There is no time to waste. And prosecute these thieving politicians!
MAGA???????? DOGE???? ICE????
We pay for federal government in mostly 3 ways: inflation, income tax, and tariffs. Inflation hurts the poor more than any other tax. The poor are fooled and misled by politicians that use them as pawns. Tariff’s are the only tax you get to pay by choice. If you don’t want to pay them, buy something else.
