Federal government support for electric vehicles and charging stations is on the chopping block in a document by President-elect Trump’s transition team that Reuters claims to have seen.
The document also recommends tariffs on battery materials to boost U.S. production “and then negotiating individual exemptions with allies,” Reuters said.
The plan would repurpose leftover money from President Biden’s $7.5 billion charging-station program to processing for battery minerals and “national defense supply chain and critical infrastructure” because EVs and charging stations aren’t “critical to defense production,” the report says, quoting the document.
The transition team also called for reinstating 2019 levels on emissions and fuel-economy standards, about a 25% increase in allowed emissions per vehicle mile than the 2025 limits and reduction of 15% for fuel economy, and blocking California from setting stricter standards, a Trump policy that Biden reversed, Reuters said.
Trump transition spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt did not contest the report, telling Reuters that Trump is delivering on his voter mandate and he will “support the auto industry, allowing space for both gas-powered cars and electric vehicles.”

THANK YOU Donald Trump, for putting the axe to these STUPID liberal mandates and EV regulations!!! BOOM!!! MAGA!!!!
Typical government, subsidizing industries that cannot stand alone without special interest involvement. Electric everything without building any infrastructure is pure folly. How about subsidizing the building of Electric power plants before mandating the elimination of proven fuel sources?
We live miles away from the Tesla battery plant in Reno yet I have seen very few charging stations for the number of EVs on the road. Reno Harley installed a $100,000 charging station for their electric bike program: never seen one charging and the model discontinued! And what of the power grid? We’ve got a massive influx of California expatriates (driving up housing costs) on a power grid and water table that can supply half of what’s here already! EVs will soon be the derelict, abandoned car dumps of the future!
Burn the pork barrel, if government has to prop up the business then it should share it’s profits.
We need to get ALL that money back that wasn’t used. Plus I’m tired of given companies subsidies! This is another example of Biden buying votes.
I ride the bus to work every day—not because I’m out to save the world but because I’m cheap and have an old, less-than-reliable car. I pay full price for a monthly bus pass. Easily, nine out of ten people I see getting on the bus don’t pay anything. Some are students and seniors. Most are people who are obviously getting subsidized (i.e., free) rides. I understand some people have no other transportation options but most of them appear to be well enough off to pay $1.00 for a single ride or $2.00 for a full day pass.
EVs could be a worthy alternative under certain, limited circumstances, but, they are not well-suited to our mainstream automotive transportation here in the US. Much of the investing done to support their use has been misdirected… almost as though Biden, himself, planned it.
OR Make competitive BUT for CA NO Energy=No EVs
Hoping DOGE and Congress can claw back a LOT of that money. Just because its been allocated somewhere, if it isn’t spent, get it back! Out that company on X and see how many Americans demand a refund from these shyster green companies.
Personally, I support getting rid of MOST subsidies, to any “industry”, including agriculture.
Another good idea would be to stop putting ethanol into gasoline. Better mileage, less deterioration of rubber parts in fuel system, no resources put into growing corn to turn into fuel, especially water, no depletion of topsoil, etc. With fracking we don’t need this ’70’s era complexity, provided we can get the refineries going so we can use our own oil.
I will NEVER drive one of those ridiculous EV’s. People I know that had them have already gotten rid of them.
Now the subsidies could go toward ICE vehicles and EV’ owners have to pay to charge them and road tax is added to the cost.
This was another Bidumb hoax and his gift to China! The Trump win didn’t come soon enough! Americas Congress should never have allowed Bidum’s EV scam and $7,500 dollar subsidy to be legal. This is another of raping of American workers and taxpayers!
Also…all the EV charging statios….the huge ones with at least 20 of the things….I have NEVER seen a car at any of them. Waste of money…
EXCELLENT!
That is great President Trump is already making things better I hope he closes down all of Biden rules and more take away Biden’s legacy if he has any since doing nothing but make high inflation that is his legacy and I am sure Obama has his part in this he has nothing but hate for President Trump as well. Once President Trump takes office there will be better times I have talked to friends they feel so much better and that goes for Dems as well.
Trump looks like another big government guy.
