The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced on Sunday a major improvement in services delivered, an overhaul that reflects the president’s term-two ethos and broader blueprint for federal efficiency. It is hoped by proponents that it could prove that targeted reforms and accountability can deliver tangible results for those who served, without Washington’s perpetual bureaucratic bloat.
The VA says they have dramatically sped up the delivery of benefits to veterans and their survivors, slashing average processing times for disability claims from 141.5 days to 80.7 days since the start of Trump’s second administration, the agency announced.
VA: “Delivering Benefits Faster Than Ever”
In a post on X on Sunday, VA Secretary Doug Collins credited the improvements to focused leadership under Trump, saying the department is now “delivering benefits faster than ever.” The backlog of pending claims has dropped below 80,000 for the first time in years, according to Collins, allowing more veterans and families to receive earned payments more quickly.
The gains extend beyond disability claims. The average processing time for initial veterans pension claims fell from 170 days to 57 days, a 66% reduction, while survivors’ pension claims dropped from 172 days to 73 days and dependency and indemnity compensation claims decreased from 163 days to 73 days, according to the VA news release linked in the post.
Burial claims processing time was cut from 70 days to 31 days.
The department also reported that claims-processing accuracy reached 94.02%, its highest 12-month rate in two years. The VA processed more than 3 million claims in fiscal 2025 and is on pace to match or exceed that volume in the current fiscal year, with 1 million disability claims completed faster than ever by early February.
Streamlining Operations
“Under the leadership of President Trump, VA is focused on delivering veterans, families, caregivers and survivors all of the benefits they’ve earned as quickly as possible,” Collins said in the release. “These tremendous improvements underscore that commitment.”
The progress reflects a year-long push by the Trump administration to streamline VA operations through targeted reforms, overtime and leveraging the fact that roughly half of the Veterans Benefits Administration’s claims processors are themselves veterans.
The department said the changes are helping it handle millions of annual claims with greater efficiency while maintaining high accuracy. The announcement comes as the VA continues to receive hundreds of thousands of pension, survivors and other benefit claims each year. Officials described the reductions as evidence that the administration’s emphasis on faster service is paying off for those who served.
That Was Then, This is Now
Veterans have long complained about the VA’s lengthy wait times for appointments and specialty referrals, often spanning months, compounded by frequent appointment cancellations and poor communication, such as unanswered calls.
Persistent staffing shortages, especially in mental health and nursing, contributed to documented allegations of inadequate care and follow-up.
Other issues previously highlighted by veterans include delays in processing disability claims, inconsistent community care coordination, and failures in suicide prevention protocols.

This administration is now running the VA not unlike you would a large corporation;to wit, checks and balances, accountability and goals setting. I’ve always had good care from the VA the last 30+ years but it is even better since 2025 timeframe in terms of timeliness. They also successfully vetted / screened out those “deadwood employees” that exist in every hierarchy. Keep up the good job Mr. President..
If there’s any group that deserves to be treated better by the country it served and protected, it’s our veterans. THANK YOU, VETERANS! And THANK YOU President Trump for your efforts to improve the VA.
Thank you president Trump.
It took years for anything my Dad needed so I’m glad to see this improvement. Our vets deserve better treatment than what they have been receiving.
I hope this is due to the slimming down of employees, whose main function was to push the paperwork/claims from their desk to another desk for approval and sometimes getting lost in the shuffle. With fewer workers, it is easier to track and expedite claims and someone having knowledge that a certain packet of forms is a person with a medical or other service related issue that needs to be resolved in a timely manner!
what a difference a little accountability makes, needs to be applied right across.Spare no one.
Another great thing that could be done for the older disabled Vets would be to eliminate the Medicare penalty. Disabled vets that get care at the VA shouldn’t be forced to pay for Medicare or have medicate rates go up (as a penalty) 10% for every year the veteran doesn’t sign up (for care they already getting ????????♂️)
They still can’t figure out why suicides are up after referring veterans to mental health services that prescribe SSRI’s and other antidepressants that have a major side effect of “suicidal, or homicidal ideation.” That’s got to be the dumbest oversight on the part of the VA.
First before all is said, I am no racist, I have no ill feelings to any race color, excluding Islam. I have been a 100% disabled Service connected Veteran since the VN Debacle, 1970. Been with the VA Medical Health care since, in 5 different areas of the country, Since 2011 in the care of VA Medical Care in Houston, Texas. Seen / experienced the disgraceful treatment of Veterans during the Planed demic of SarsCov2 bioweapon that was intentionally used for what we all experienced. The condition that puzzles me is…. Receiving my regular appointments at the VAMC Houston before that crock 19 nightmare, things were fairly in a accommodating order for appointments, etc. One thing that troubled me was that Muslims were in charge of valet parking, very rude, short and threating to my wife, ignoring her inquiring of any questions. During the following 2 years, the liberals dominated the VAH Care system. rude constrictions, rejecting with control, etc. Appointments were 3 4 months in delay, The hospital lobby became a social club for the blacks, all employees (95%) black, receptions desks, sanitation workers, etc. police all black. I was refused previous critical care for my service connect disabilities due to the fact I would not agree to one of those nose probes for crock tests, for they infected my sinuses, but no matter that was their rule. Old crippled WW II Veterans in wheel chairs were yelled at, treated abruptly and without any consideration. Veterans that were tested positive by the PAS nose test (which was and is proven to be 70% accurate) were isolated in wards with no visitors, some to die alone due VA use of remdesivir. causing known kidney failure and respirators. Thanks to Joe Biden. Apologize for distraction, since Pres. Trump and new VA Sec.it’s a different world at the VA. Many of the VA service providers at the beginning of Trumps agendas were complaining that many providers with quitting the VA, true all the dead beat, fake Dr.s assistances, nurses, that were unqualified was leaving before being fired. Now with all the DEI and others gone, what an improvement. Now to the point of my actual mysteries, The VAMC Houston is very large, patient parking areas are, my guess over 35 acers, is always full, wait time for handicap is 30 minutes to 2 hrs., just a regular parking space, 30 mins to an hour at each of our appointments, always, never before 2 yrs prior was this the case. At every appointment in 4 different specialty clinics at the VAMC Houston, 95% of all patients are Black. All reception, clinic assistances are Black. 75% of Veteran provided assigned assistance equipment i.e; 4-wheel mobile chairs / walkers, wheelchairs, motorized scooters, mobile motorized heavy duty adjustable wheelchair scooter combinations, are used by Blacks. Yesterday at the ENT clinic appointment, 2 white patients, all others maybe 10 – 12 black. Earlier in the week at the VA eye clinics waiting room over 35 patients waiting, 3 white patients all others Black. No Hispanic. The waiting room was like an obstacle course, barely able to navigate to the treatment areas when called, due to all the assistance devices, large walkers, wheelchairs. This condition is same at my many appointments I regularly attend there. 3-4 per month. Now I ask just for clarity, Blacks make up approximately 12% – 13% of our total population, according to my research, Black Veterans who qualify for health care benefits from the VAMC (Veterans Administration Medical Centers) make up approximately 3% – 6 % of all veterans. That’s including newly discharged to 10 years after. Again not a racist, but very confused with the actual observed ration I witness. Something is not adding up.
