In a shot across the bow at Big Tech companies, Pope Leo XIV used his first major teaching letter, known as an encyclical, to call for protecting kids from “hypersexualized” and violent content on social media. He also addressed the consequences of the rapid proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI) in the sweeping 42,300-word document, arguing that the new technology can be used for good but also can wreak havoc on society if left unchecked.
From the moment then-Cardinal Robert Prevost took his new name as Leo XIV, it was widely expected that he would directly address AI. Pope Leo XIII, who served from 1878 to 1903, is remembered for his encyclical Rerum Novarum, which was released in response to the social, economic, and political upheaval of the Industrial Revolution. That groundbreaking letter addressed the benefits, harms, and solutions needed to protect workers and the human spirit during a period of rapid change.
With the world now facing similarly disruptive new technologies, Pope Leo XIV made clear that addressing those changes will be a major priority of his papacy. To drive that point home, he signed his first encyclical on May 15 – the 135th anniversary of Rerum Novarum.
Leo XIV’s encyclical is titled “Magnifica Humanitas (Magnificent Humanity): On Safeguarding the Human Person in the Time of Artificial Intelligence.” As Vatican News reports, the document is “divided into five chapters” and “has an underlying premise: technology is not ‘a force antagonistic to humanity,’ nor is it ‘inherently evil.’” Rather, because technology is a creation of Mankind, “it takes on the characteristics of those who devise, finance, regulate, and use it.”
In one of the more vivid sections of the document, Leo evokes the story of the Tower of Babel to caution against the pursuit of uniformity and standardization at the expense of humility and individualism. “With the heart of a shepherd and a father,” he writes, “I ask everyone to abandon the construction of yet another Tower of Babel and to join forces in building up the common good, so that humanity will never lose its beauty, and the world once again will come to recognize the human heart as the place where God desires to dwell.”
While AI may be a modern technology, this and other Biblical references are a reminder that the social and ethical challenges that AI poses have ancient roots – and are in fact deeply ingrained in the human condition.
Like most human inventions, AI can be used for good, such as faster processing of medical results. However, there are also serious concerns with the effects of massive data centers, necessary to power AI, on rural communities, as they can require heavy usage of water and electricity. There are also mounting concerns about the effects of AI on mental health and educational outcomes, as young people turn to the technology for everything from companionship to help writing papers.
In one tragic case, ChatGPT reportedly coached a teenager on how to kill himself, even offering to write a suicide note for him. Kids are also using AI to replace romantic intimacy, with a majority of Gen Z saying that they “can form a deep emotional bond with an AI-generated partner,” as one study found. The issue of social media and technology addiction has even attracted the attention of the Trump administration, which recently issued a health advisory about children and screen time.
It’s no wonder, then, that Pope Leo used part of his letter to call for policy solutions to put limits on children’s internet access in order to protect them from inappropriate and explicit content, as well as exploitation and addictive algorithms.
“Our first task is neither to demonize nor idolize technological tools, but to utilize them on the basis of a fundamental principle, namely that truth is a common good and not the property of those with power or influence,” he wrote, making clear that technology itself is not inherently good or evil.
Pope Leo also warned about how minors are being taken advantage of through AI and social media. Harms to “vulnerable” kids are “further aggravated,” he said, by “easy access to violent or degrading content that offends sensibility, to pornographic and hypersexualized material.”
Leo likewise warned of “[o]nline phenomena such as grooming, blackmail and the sexual exploitation of minors” which he said are made easier by “AI tools capable of manipulating images and videos.”
Families play a role in protecting children from this content, the pope wrote. However, policymakers should support parents in protecting children from the dangers of the internet and AI.
The pope praised legislators for “setting age limits” on social media use, “holding service providers accountable rather than shifting the whole burden of control onto families” and “providing specific protections against all forms of online sexual exploitation and violence.” While parents have the ultimate authority over their children, Leo said, policymakers and internet companies also must work on behalf of the family to protect kids. “No man is an island,” as the saying goes.
As Pope Leo addressed later in his letter, business profits cannot be allowed to override the role of the family and the safeguarding of minors. “At the root of these problems lies a technocratic and post-humanist mentality that tends to regard the human person as an object to be manipulated or a resource to be optimized,” he warned. This mentality “remov[es] all safeguards against the unchecked pursuit of profit.”
AI companies are benefiting from lucrative defense contracts at the federal level along with tax breaks and other incentives at the state and local level. That means taxpayers, and their elected officials, have the responsibility to ensure developments in AI benefit everyone – not just investors. Likewise, it is imperative that the financial interests of AI and internet companies do not supersede the broader societal interest in protecting children.
Pope Leo’s encyclical rightly throws weight behind this mission, ensuring that the same tools that can help society flourish and the economy grow are not leading to the spiritual destruction of the next generation of Americans.

Hey Leo, you need to protect kids from Democrat doctrination. But then again the Catholic Church has how many years of protecting child abusers to atone for? Protecting children from the Democrat party would be a good start
This Pope is too political and too “woke.” He needs to concentrate on God’s teachings and the evil within his own Church. While it is good to be compassionate, allowing compassion to dilute or pervert the Word of God and the teachings of the Christ is literally paving the road to Hell for the millions who follow the Catholic religion. To allow himself to criticize Trump and Republicans while overlooking the Left’s love of baby-killing and child-maiming is not what his position is about.
While I agree with many of the views expressed by the Pope in his first Encyclical, I cannot help but wish he would spend more time on the job he was tasked with. He is the Leader of the Catholic Church, but so far I have not seen much time and effort directed at the concerns of the Catholic Church throughout the world. He has expressed his opinions many times on matters not in his control, such as the Political Arena in the United States. Does he want to be a Politician or a Leader of the Catholic Church. There are and have been far too many issues withing the Church that need attention, and the Politics of the United States does not belong in the Vatican.
He could start by not putting porno bishop “artists” in positions of “art” in Catholic Cathedrals. And, not saying homosexuality is “love” and giving them blessings. Much child sexual abuse is done in “loving” homosexual relationships”.
Brilliant, accurate , honest description of the Artificial intelligence – Internet. situation Matt. Well done ! This is of great importance as if this technology is misused it is the freedom of our minds. that could be put in jeopardy.A comparison with radar could be made – radar is an aid to navigation – it does not take the place of people being able to think , to be able to size up rapidly changing situations that could be the result of weather, human error, or a combination of things that can get misunderstood easily . The human mind needs freedom in order to react properly to new ideas that are presented during our entire lives. That applies to Mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry, as well as driving a car, or even being a passenger on a train, a bus or an airplane or ship. Provided that the majority of people will choose to defend the freedom of their minds instead of surrendering to an electronic device things will stay in place that will be needed to defend civilization- the qualities of strength, courage, wisdom and faith in God. Common sense is a great attribute and respect for good character, having a sense of purpose in life as well as living by a code of conduct are all independent of any form of artificial intelligence or internet technology. And those human qualities are far superior to the Artificial intelligence
The “pope” needs to stay in his lane. The priest have done more damage to children than the internet has. He needs to take care of the evil members of his so called religion
Computers have their place but it has come down to no human communication. Kids don’t use their imagination anymore. They don’t talk at the dinner table but eat in their room. Because the parents are on their computers or phones catching up
on their social network. To see what their friends and acquaintances are up to. Voyeurs all of them. Nobody on X or Facebook thousands of miles away cares what they are doing. Everyone created a world that doesn’t exist in truth. We have lost human discussions face to face. Computers have destroyed humanity. Love is gone. Everyone with a different view point gets shunned. When you live in a progressive community and you are the only MAGA believe you me you are shunned like the Amish. Your ideas are nothing for they quote TikTok and CNN and other progressive media as the truth. They ask questions of the current leaders that have nothing to do with the job they are doing. They don’t want to know the truth they word it in such a way that it’s a gotcha question. They don’t want a dialogue or an explanation just answer yes or no. That is brainwashing people to agree with them. That is the way the progressives are manipulating the people. And AI is even worse. The vulnerable among us believe everything they see on the internet. What is here already will get worse much worse in the future. It’s genocide by computer. The Autopen Biden administration tried to shut opposing opinions down on social media by calling it incorrect information. And people with opposing ideas were watched or blocked on social media. Free speech was no more. AI will see to it to eliminate those with an opposing view. We have this platform to opine but for how much longer. Remember this when you vote in the midterms. Green is gone. Thank you Texas voters for overwhelmingly vote him out. Green you should be ashamed of yourself for your actions you displayed during President Trump’s state of the Union. Go home and take that cane with you.
I’m sorry, but so many Catholics and allegedly Christians are total hypocrites! You don’t stand up against Abortion even though it’s murder and the Papacy is the biggest farce of all, the Pope doesn’t want to alienate followers so he won’t speak out against it. I think that we can all agree that there are certainly circumstances where this may be necessary but inconvenience is absolutely not one of them! There are countless couples around this country are fully willing and able to adopt these children and make no mistake, these are children from conception, if you believe the Bible at all you must believe all of the Bible! Don’t fall for these satanic games people, wake up.
But he’s OK with boys who think they’re girls using girls bathrooms and locker rooms?
Protect them from Pedo priests. Thank You.
Agree with Pope on this all else NO BUT right here
I wonder if he is worried about Christians being persecuted in communist countries, has he anything to say about that.
Well, we’ll see. PerHAPS ‘they’ might “hear” The Pope.
Reckon?
The Pope needs to work on protecting little boys from pedophile priests which has gone on for years and mostly just covered up by moving them around
I am glad that we have an American pope, before I make my decision if he is okay or not, because i do not trust what i see in the main stream media. But I do one thing: I miss John Paul II.
The POPE is silent by the 67,000 babies killed by Jews in GAZA and West Babk and now Lebanon? Why is this? This is not of a Catholic? I expect more from a leader of the Catholics around the world! Genocide of people by Zionist Jews cannot be ignored!
Hey leo16, what about all the children you and your fellow satanics abuse, traffic and kill?
All you demonic heretics that have captured the Catholic Church be damned! Your judgement has been made, your justice is forthcoming!
From a pedo protector and demonic islam lover… pope’s are evil…
When are Americans going to realize that it is just as dangerous to send you child to public schools!?!? Conservative have been “asleep at the wheel” for FAR too long, sitting out school board elections and for the communist Progressive Leftist it has been a field day. Now they have control over that child from K-12 and beyond. This is exactly what has happened and now we have 75M Americans voting for Harris after seeing what a disaster Biden’s four years were.(I know, it was really Obama’s third term)
Kids need to be protected from the blasphemous and perverse RCC.
Wow, so many ignorant, hateful, bigoted comments in this thread.
