House Republicans Urge Bessent to Revoke Southern Poverty Law Center’s Tax-Exempt Status

Several House Republicans urged Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Thursday to revoke the Southern Poverty Law Center’s tax-exempt status in light of allegations the organization funded efforts to fabricate and expand extremist groups.

The letter comes after a federal grand jury in April approved charges against the organization for alleged wire fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and other offenses.

North Carolina GOP Rep. Mark Harris led the letter to Bessent, claiming the organization is not operating as a nonprofit but as a partisan “left-wing political machine,” and violated Section 501 of the Internal Revenue Code by targeting conservative and Christian organizations while receiving tax-exempt status.

“The Southern Poverty Law Center has strayed far from what its founders intended,” Harris said in a statement. “Instead of fighting hate, it now fuels the very division it claims to oppose … A political operation should not receive the benefits reserved for a charity.”

GOP Reps. Barry Moore, Alabama; Mary Miller, Illinois; Byron Donalds, Florida; Harriet Hageman, Wyoming; and Andy Ogles, Tennessee also signed the letter.

“The SPLC is an extremist left-wing operation masquerading as a charity,” Hageman posted on X. “[Bessent] must revoke their tax-exempt status.”

They need to revoke all of the tax exemptions of all tax exempt organizations that lobby and are involved in partisan political activities: ie. SPLC, Planned Parenthood….

The SPLC “Slime Puke Loony Center” is just another hate group, no better than the KKK, ANTIFA, and the Democrat Party, all and others like them and those who associate with them hate America and the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and are doing anything and everything to destroy it.
This coming 4th of July be very aware and watchful for attacks on our freedom!

One would think that President Trump would find a way to take away their non-tax status AND to also stipulate that if there is more money sent to anti-American entities, they will be prosecuted.

The fact that they never claim a left wing group, where virtually ALL VIOLENCE resides, as a hate group shows their politics. The fact they get into politics shows they are biased, that alone should dq them from tax exempt status, much less the garbage they have pulled now.

An excellent idea! ANY organization that advocates Left wing ideas and philosophies including murdering the unborn like the SPLC, CAIR and Planned Parenthood should NOT be tax exempt. Enough of our tax dollars are wasted by DemoKKKRAT politicians elected by morons and moochers as it is.

A tax exemption? This outfit needs prosecution, and I thought congress had the power to revoke tax exemption. Of course I’m just a tax payer, what I think could write a book. Our congress cannot even pass a law to protect our women and children from the illegal killers, that do so, because they know they’ll get to be put into our American jails, with the hope that another Biden, will pardon them to kill again. This is my opinion, but think about it, free lodging with people they enjoy being with.
Why does it take so long to get justice?

Let’s do away with tax exemptions for churches and charities while we are at it. Too many groups avoid paying taxes for too many false reasons. And if you want to be charitable, be charitable. Don’t look for a tax exemption on your generosity. This would be one way to have wealthy pay their “fair share”, wouldn’t it? They write off much with their charitable foundations.
