The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has a Lifeline program publicly available that is designed to help lower the price of phone and internet services for Americans who may be struggling in low-income households. Americans who are eligible can receive a potential discount of $9.25 per month.

In a statement, the Social Security Administration (SSA) explained that Americans who receive “Supplemental Security Income, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Medicaid, and other Federal Assistance programs, as well as households with income of 135 percent or less than the Federal Poverty Guidelines” are eligible for the discount.

SSA Chief Communications Officer Nick Perrine praised the benefits that the program provides to those in need.

“This federal initiative is designed to make phone and internet services more affordable for low-income households, ensuring that more individuals have the connectivity needed to access important resources and services online,” Perrine said. “Eligible consumers can receive a monthly discount of up to $9.25. Consumers living on Tribal lands are eligible for an enhanced discount of up to $34.25 per month, making it even easier to stay connected and access essential services.”

Eligible Americans can apply for the discount on the Universal Service Administrative Company’s website. Perrine encouraged those who enrolled to also sign up for an online my Social Security account. These accounts allow Americans to access their Social Security benefits online without needing to visit an office in person.

As of February, more than 100 million Americans have signed up for an online my Social Security account. With an account, Americans can request a replacement Social Security card online, view their claim status, set up or change their direct deposit, change their address, and view their Social Security statements.

SSA Commissioner Frank Bisignano touted my Social Security accounts reaching this significant milestone.

“More than 100 million Americans have chosen to set up my Social Security accounts because they want immediate access to service, 24 hours a day, and tools to manage their benefits with ease,” Bisignano said. “This milestone underscores what we are working toward at SSA: providing convenient and best-in-class customer service that meets people where they are, whether it is online with my Social Security, on the phone, or in person at local field offices.”

Earlier this month, the SSA also promoted its annual Slam the Scam initiative to raise awareness of scammers impersonating the agency. The SSA ensured Americans that no employee will demand an immediate payment with threats, ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone, or promise benefit approval for information or money.

A whole whopping 9.25 off your 100 buck internet and 100 buck phone bill. That’s about as useful as a teat on a boar. Why is SS giving out taxpayer SS funds for this? They are all claiming SS is going broke, but can give out free money to the slacker?

When I think of the years I did not have cell and computer service, also little cash, I did not suffer, nor did I expect tax payers to provide me with life’s needs, nor luxuries.

Does anyone think the major internet and cell carriers are gonna just eat those government mandated discounts? Hell no, they’ll just spread them out across all their other customers. They get discounts, everyone else pays for them.

Can they spare $9.25? Why bother having this program?

America’s “poor” have cellphones and internet. $9 isn’t going to mean anything.

Another genius bureaucrat. The working middle class always gets the burden. Thanks for nothing.
