American Students Squeezed Out As Colleges Chase Foreign Funds

The ongoing controversy over the Trump administration’s effort to bar Harvard from admitting new foreign students has highlighted a long-festering problem in American higher education. Even as American taxpayers send their hard-earned money to colleges and universities, those same institutions are admitting ever-increasing numbers of foreign-born students and forcing out American applicants.

Foreign students now fill more seats at American colleges than ever before. In 2023–24, U.S. universities enrolled more than 1.1 million international students – a record high, and a seven percent increase from the previous year, according to the 2024 Open Doors Report. The vast majority came from China and India, whose students make up more than half the total.

This isn’t just a handful of bright minds seeking opportunity. It’s a massive cohort – particularly at supposedly “elite” institutions.

At Columbia, which has become a hotbed of anti-American and anti-Israel demonstrations, 39 percent of the student body now hails from outside the United States, according to Reuters. The school’s foreign-born population increased by 18 percent from 2017 to 2022 alone.

At New York University, approximately 42 percent of the student body is foreign-born, and the school saw a 24 percent increase in that population from 2017 to 2022. At Northeastern University, an astonishing 58 percent of the student population was foreign-born in 2022.

American campuses can and should offer opportunities to foreign-born students. But in recent years there has been an exponential increase in the foreign-born population on campuses that raises all sorts of cultural and national security concerns.

One of the biggest open secrets in academia, particularly in STEM fields, is that the Chinese government sends students to infiltrate American universities and steal intellectual property to fuel China’s tech economy. Meanwhile, China admits precious few American students to its universities.

Cases like that of Mahmoud Khalil, the Columbia University student and pro-Hamas activist who has played a key role in leading the harassment and intimidation of Jewish students on campus, also underscore how admitting foreign students who are openly hostile toward the United States and Western Civilization can create an atmosphere of fear and chaos on campus.

Moreover, the cold reality is that every acceptance letter sent out to a foreign-born student is a denial letter sent to an American applicant. Combining federal, state, and local contributions, U.S. taxpayers provide over $400 billion annually to support American colleges and universities. Is it really fair that their children are being passed over for admission in favor of applicants who have never paid a dime in U.S. taxes?

It’s not just educational opportunities, either. About 41 percent of international students remain in the U.S. after graduation, including 75 percent of PhD recipients, according to GZERO. As a result, more than 20 percent of the U.S. STEM workforce and STEM graduates from American universities are now foreign-born.

Those high-paying jobs are jobs that are not going to American-born workers. Are we really supposed to believe that the United States is not producing enough intelligent, qualified individuals to fill those roles? Balancing the benefits from international talent with the need to protect American job opportunities should remain an important goal for universities and lawmakers alike.

There are likely two major driving forces behind the explosion of foreign-born students on American campuses.

The first is the left’s obsession with identity politics and diversity quotas. University administrators love touting the number of minority (read: non-white) students in each freshman class – and there’s no easier way to fill chairs with “people of color” than admitting ever-increasing numbers of foreign applicants.

But the more compelling motive behind American universities eagerly courting foreign students is likely a financial one. International students typically pay full freight – no in-state discounts, no financial aid, just the sticker price. For colleges and universities hungry for revenue, that’s a deal too good to pass up.

In 2015, though they made up less than five percent of enrollment, foreign students delivered nearly 28 percent of all tuition dollars, a gap that has only grown as international enrollment climbs, according to GZERO. No university president wants to see that cash flow dry up.

This perverse incentive raises serious questions about what the priorities of American colleges and universities are and whom they ultimately exist to serve. When federal dollars flow to these institutions, there’s an expectation that those funds advance American interests. That means making sure American students are taken care of first.

Capping the percentage of foreign students at federally funded colleges is one way to enforce that principle. President Trump’s call for a 15 percent cap at Harvard brought this idea into public view, as reported by the Daily Caller.

The concept of a cap on foreign-born students as a condition for federal funding could be applied to other universities as well. The pitch is simple: if schools want access to American taxpayer dollars, they should prioritize American students.

International students undoubtedly enrich U.S. campuses with fresh ideas, diverse cultures, and a broader perspective on the world. For those students who truly grasp and value what America represents, their presence reminds us of the unique strengths and spirit of our nation, helping us see it with renewed admiration through their eyes. But those benefits shouldn’t come at the cost of hopeful American students ready to embrace the opportunity of higher education and build a better country on the other side of it.

The international students are like the illegals crossing the border an instrument to destroy America. And Obama and Biden both worked at this to happen. By spreading hatred via lies over this country. COVID was the catalyst where people believed what they were told. And to this day we are still paying for it because the effect of the vaccine is still killing people. With heart attacks and Turbo cancer. The illegals didn’t have to take the shots. Come on in people. And here we are. Academia contributed to making the universities foreign student institutions, and the kicker is with our tax money. Like Osama Bin Laden said America will destroy itself from within. These students are not the brains but kids they can mold to their propaganda. In the past you got an education at these elite schools. Now you just take up space to be brainwashed by these progressive communist professors. Student protests are rampant. And supported by the millionaires and billionaires who want to destroy America. All these Ivy League schools should have their federal grants taken away and invest in Technical schools. Here in Colorado they just took a program away that would give students a 5th year in high school to take preparatory classes to go to a junior college. No more. These kids don’t need any more education, according to our progressive legislature and governor. The progressives want them to stay dumb. But foreign students yes they have to be supported. They are being groomed like the illegals to take over this country. Civil war or war of the worlds? See LA and then decide!!!

So many colleges are woke and even anti-American so American families need to encourage their kids to pursue tech schools, trade schools or private colleges that promote patriotism and godly principles.

Why do we educate those who oppose us and want to destroy us? Simple answer is today colleges and Universities are businesses interested in making $$$$$$. Shame on them!

Sure, it makes sense to educate future terrorists, that way we can look at the destruction their education brought to America. Then maybe those in charge of the ever present communist colleges can suffer the same fate as those affected.

How about publishing a report showing EVERY college/university’s percentage of foreign enrollment. — Including percentage from each foreign country.

The judges ruling against Americans are liars and traitors, obviously working for foreign, not American interests. Inc the lazy, useless politicians won’t do anything about treason by judges, the equally lazy and treacherous Chief Justice of the U. S. Supreme Court, John Robert’s, needs to reign in these phonies. But since John Roberts’ oath to protect and defend the Constitution was also a lie (after all, his oath to protect the Court followed his oath to protect and defend the Constitution) and he has no interest in answering to his boss, we the people of the United States, we the people are defenseless in the face of treachery. I could go on, but what’s the point. We’re celebrating the 250th anniversary of the start of the American Revolution, and this is what we now have for a government. George III is laughing his ass off, wherever he is!

Young people should understand that not everyone is cutout to attend college nor do they have to! Learn a construction trade and save yourselves thousands of dollars in debt! It’s much better than being duped by these overpriced blood sucking colleges and you have no college debt to pay back for years and years!

Thank You, thank you, thank you, for bringing up this fact. This has been going on in California for over 25 years. In 2001 my 1% (of the NATION,not just California) white middle class Son was denied admittance to all of the UC’s in California. This was an extremely qualified student. At that time UCLA (as an example) had 23% of their student body foreign students. 23% in a paid for by the Ca taxpayers university. This is the norm.
The REAL truth about foreign students is ALL about money. Most foreign students are exactly like our elite rich kids in our own country. Mommy and Daddy have lots of money and/or influence. Universities want the dough. It’s a big FAT lie, that they are all a bunch of Elon Musks.

When I hear people go on and on about American students been qualified, I know they do not know what their talking about and do not know any highly qualified students that are denied admission. I think it should be mandatory for Public Universities to offer automatic admission to ALL the top 1% American students from their respective state into their public institutions . No matter race, color, creed. Then go from there to the top 3%.

I believe some states do this.

Tuition and expenses have already been raised to prices above the ability of most families to pay. Since educators have placed emphasis on their compensation, this will not change.

Perhaps a 50% (or 100%) tariff on foreign student tuition should be the condition for a student visa. A way to pay back the American taxpayer for our support of Colleges.

Many of our large university that students want to attend only want the tons of money that they get from enrolling foreign students. They do not care if the students actually get an education, they are in it for the money. The bloated inflated fees for even in-state students is mind-blowing and they increase every year. All we ever see from these students is rioting and violence in our streets. It is time we put a strict limit on how many foreign students can come to the U.S. One of the main detriments to our country is too many non-Americans here and a rotten, radical liberal group that is trying to ruin our Republic by have too many unAmericans in our midst.

The charters of all Arizona’s universities contain verbiage that requires the school to provide college education to Arizona’s students at as low a cost as possible. Instead, the university system has grown too big to worry about how our kids are doing. This is a direct violation of their charter. Enforcement of this charter is the responsibility of the Board of Regents. Republican Gubernatorial candidate Karen Taylor Robson was on that board. She didn’t take care of Arizonan’s then and I’m not confident she will take care of us as Governor.
I’m voting for Andy Biggs. He has more experience and is a proven leader.

I always thought that the USA was to influence the world with OUR way of life because it is THE BEST but allowing so many foreign students in to our universities seems to have had a negative reverse effect—a support for Communism and socialism. How stupid are we? Our tax dollars SHOULD GO to USA citizens/students FIRST with a limit to the number of students that are allowed to study here.

Stopping the influx of foreign students is an easy fix…deny their visas, or only allow X number of visas for colleges.

Universities cater to the foreign student to collect foreign student tuition (much higher than the in-state tuition), and to attract those students it caters to their values. Time to reject their international student visa approval programs or move these universities out of the country.

Since many of these colleges are anti American and spread communism/Wokeism anyways, they’re probably more inline with teaching foreign commies anyway. Keeping our kids away is probably doing us all a favor. We need more trades by far and if you really need a university for say a medical degree, there are still good schools out there.

The foreign governments PAY cash money for their spies to attend “elite” colleges! That’s one reason the eggheads want to enroll them. They subsidize the lazy “faculty” members who teach maybe one class a semester! All our media should STOP calling Yale, Harvard, etc “elite.” TRASH isn’t “elite.”

No administration should be barring foreign students unless they are criminals. Your column is irresponsible. I’m GOP but no party should be going off the deep end into extremism and that’s what the column does. The government should largely stay out of the affairs of Harvard.

I agree with Nick and while I’m GOP I have common sense and know religion is poisoning the country and the current GOP leaders just don’t get it. The author of the column went to Hillsdale which is a college poisoned by extreme religion and as expected the article is trash.

Ohio State is supposedly a public school but god and jesus are being pushed all across campus and officials there are encouraging it and the football team is forcing christianity on everyone and that revival there with god and jesus with thousands of ignorant students was sickening.
