A Taste of the States Part 2: Famous American Recipes to Celebrate America’s 250th Birthday

America’s 250th birthday is a celebration of diversity, culture, and shared traditions—and nothing captures that better than food. These recipes highlight the flavors that define each region, telling the story of a nation through its kitchens.

Whether you recreate one dish or all of them, you’re not just cooking—you’re celebrating 250 years of American history, one bite at a time.


Key Lime Pie (Florida)

Key lime pie originated in the Florida Keys in the late 19th century, where fresh Key limes were abundant but refrigeration was scarce. Early versions used simple ingredients like lime juice, egg yolks, and sweetened condensed milk—which could be stored without spoiling—to create a tart, creamy filling. Over time, the dessert became a signature of Florida’s culinary identity and remains a beloved symbol of the state’s tropical heritage and ingenuity.

Ingredients:

  • 9 graham crackers (1/3 of a box)
  • 5 tbsp butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup of sugar
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1 15 oz can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/2 cup Key Lime juice (or regular lime juice if you can’t find it)
  • 1 cup of heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp confectioners’ sugar

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350.
  2. Finely crush the graham cracker by using a food processor or placing in a zip-top plastic bag and crushing them with a rolling pin.
  3. Mix them in a bowl with the sugar and the melted butter.
  4. In a 9 inch pie dish, press the crumb mixture firmly on the bottom then up the sides.
  5. Bake for 8 minutes. Set aside crust and leave the oven on at 350.
  6. In a large mixing bowl, beat the egg yolks with a hand mixer until thickened. Then add the sweetened condensed milk and Key Lime juice and mix until smooth.
  7. Pour the mixture in the pie crust and back for ten minutes.
  8. Let cool slightly at room temperature and then place in fridge to chill for a couple of hours.
  9. Before serving whip the heavy cream and confectioners sugar together it creates soft peaks.
  10. Top the pie with the whipped cream and serve!

Made with Key limes native to Florida, this dessert is bright and refreshing.


Crab Cakes (Maryland)

Maryland crab cakes are deeply rooted in the Chesapeake Bay’s rich fishing heritage, where blue crabs have long been a vital part of the region’s economy and cuisine. Dating back to the 19th century, the dish was originally a simple way for local cooks to stretch fresh crab meat with minimal filler while highlighting its natural flavor. Over time, Maryland crab cakes became a beloved regional specialty, known for their emphasis on high-quality crab and Old Bay seasoning, symbolizing the state’s coastal traditions and culinary pride.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb crabmeat
  • 2 slices white bread, crusts trimmed
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 tbsp Old Bay Seasoning
  • 1 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp Dijon-style prepared mustard
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp butter

Instructions:

  1. Place crab meat in a large bowl and remove any remaining shell pieces.
  2. Break bread into small pieces and add to crab meat.
  3. Add beaten egg, Old Bay seasoning, mayonnaise, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce to the bowl.
  4. Mix by hand to avoid overworking crab meat; you want to keep the lumps of meat as much as possible.
  5. Form into 6 patties.
  6. Heat butter in a skillet over medium heat.
  7. Fry patties in hot butter until golden brown, about 4 minutes per side.

Blue crab is central to Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay culture.


Pork Roll / Taylor Ham Sandwich (New Jersey)

The New Jersey pork roll—often called Taylor Ham in North Jersey—dates back to the mid-19th century when it was developed as a convenient, processed meat product for easy storage and transport. It quickly became a regional staple, especially as a breakfast sandwich served with egg and cheese on a roll. Over time, the pork roll sandwich evolved into a cultural icon of New Jersey, reflecting both the state’s industrial food innovation and its strong local food traditions.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 slices Taylor ham
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 slices American cheese
  • Kosher salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 Kaiser roll, split and warmed through
  • Ketchup (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Line a plate with paper towel.
  2. In a 10-inch skillet set over medium heat, melt butter until foaming.
  3. Add the pork slices and cook, pressing down once or twice with a spatula, until well browned around the edges and domed on top, about 3 minutes.
  4. Flip and continue cooking until second side is well browned, 2 to 3 minutes longer.
  5. Transfer to prepared plate and set aside. 
  6. Gently slip eggs into the pan, season with salt, and cook until the whites are just set and bubbling, then flip, season with pepper and continue cooking until eggs are over-easy, about 2 minutes.
  7. Place both slices of cheese on top of one of the eggs and continue to cook until eggs are over-medium, about 1 minute longer.
  8. Stack the cheese-covered egg on top of the bare egg and transfer to a plate.
  9. Dip Kaiser roll halves, cut side down, into the pan juices to lightly coat.
  10. Set eggs on top of bottom half of roll, top with pork roll slices, and close sandwich.
  11. Wrap sandwich tightly in aluminum foil and let steam for at least 3 minutes and up to five—the longer the steam, the softer the sandwich.
  12. Serve with ketchup (if using), either alongside for dunking or on the sandwich itself, depending on preference.

Peach Cobbler (Georgia)

Georgia peach cobbler has its roots in early American frontier cooking, when settlers adapted traditional British desserts using locally available ingredients. In Georgia—known as the Peach State due to its abundant orchards—fresh peaches became the star of this simple baked dish, topped with biscuit or batter crust. Over time, peach cobbler grew into a beloved Southern classic, symbolizing regional pride, agricultural richness, and the comforting traditions of homemade American desserts.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cups self-rising flour
  • 1 stick butter
  • ½ cup water
  • 2 cups sugar, divided
  • 4 cups peaches, peeled and sliced
  • 1 cup milk
  • ground cinnamon (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 °F.
  2. Combine the peaches, 1 cup sugar, and water in a saucepan and mix well.
  3. Bring to a boil and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from the heat.
  4. Put the butter in a 3-quart baking dish and place in oven to melt.
  5. Mix remaining 1 cup sugar, flour, and milk slowly to prevent clumping.
  6. Pour mixture over melted butter. Do not stir.
  7. Spoon fruit on top, gently pouring in syrup.
  8. Sprinkle top with ground cinnamon, if using. Batter will rise to top during baking.
  9. Bake for 30 to 45 minutes.
  10. To serve, scoop onto a plate and serve with your choice of whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
