WASHINGTON, D.C. – Lawmakers and their staff members convened on Capitol Hill Wednesday evening and lamented over the fate of social security and Medicare at an event sponsored by a senior citizens advocacy organization.

The Association of Mature American citizens — or “the conservative AARP” as group members will good-naturedly say — hosted the event in the Cannon House Office Building to pay tribute to Reps. Diane Black (R-Tenn.) and Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) who the group said have taken it upon themselves…

Congressmen/women should not have better health care policies than the people they represent and who put them in office.

The government steals our money and some of you idiots think the answer is to raise, the retirement age? Put the dam money back. Most people are not able to work longer because they don’t have cushy desk jobs.some of us actually work for a living physically. The got just robbed SS again of 150 billion dollars! Wake up people.

Judith Rae

Yes, pay back + interest what has been ‘stolen’ from the Social Security Accounts; put more people to work, to increase the $ pool! Perhaps, also, start taking $’s out of Welfare Checks for Social Security & Medicare! ! !

Howard Last

Social Security does not need to be fixed; it needs to be repealed outright. The problem is how to make whole all our citizens that had their funds stolen over all these many years. Yes stolen, what else would you call it when something is taken under duress? Don’t pay your FICA and see what happens. There is a simple way to get their money back, just abolish all items in the budget not authorized by the Constitution. This would give better than 90% of the budget available to give their money back with interest. It would have an added benefit of getting Big Brother out of our lives. How many people are aware that Social Security was the idea of Otto Bismarck and that Adolph Hitler refined it? Joe Stalin’s best friend FDR fits right in with these two great humanitarians. Bismarck made the retirement age 65 because most… Read more »

To any readers of this article who have just begun to view comments: if you really would like to know how the cow eats the cabbage and understand what’s going on with some assurance of truth in the making, read the back and forth of HAM and PAULE at the beginning of comments way at the bottom. They cover much and are more conservative than AMAC’s leadership, and are more believably atuned to our membership’s way of thinking. Just an observation. Keep it up guys and gals, and thanks for a good ride.

I agree with just about all the comments that have been made. What disturbs me also, is taking Social Security away and using it for
Social Security Disability benefits. Most of it is a farce because people don’t want to work if they can collect these benefits and once
they are on the benefits there is not a continual check to see if they should remain on them. I am sure some of the people that collect
are legitimate but most aren’t. Also, I have sent e-mails to our reps in congress and also to AMAC re: a COLA for seniors in 2016. You
don’t hear anything from Washington. I have received responses from AMAC and I am told my e-mail has been forwarded to their
political director. Mr. Weber needs to take a tough stand!

If the government would put back into the SS fund what they have taken out for other purposes, we might not have a problem.

Richard Werlein (a very senior Attorney)

Reply to John: I thoroughly agree that Patty Myers has it right and that AMAC should forward her message to all members of Congress.

Instead of cutting SS and Medicare, why not cut subsidies like free phones, give aways for illegals, travel and extravagances for the president. There are many ways to extend SS and Medicare.

It’s no secret why Obama’s administration has more than doubled the food stamp (EBT) rolls, gutted Medicare to pay for entitlement increases elsewhere (Medicaid, et al), and flung open the doors to the borders… It’s all about legacy and votes for the left. You have to be an indoctrinated lemming to not see the end game. When will BOTH sides stop referring to SS and Medicare as entitlements and/or benefits. The actuaries say if those funds had been redirected to the S&P 500, instead, even with the major crashes, most of the payees (and their children) would be set for the rest of their lives. Instead, we have the world’s largest Ponzi scheme, threatening to go bust in 15 years because our greedy politicians (including Alan Simpson) believe OUR mismanaged future funding was fair game to raid whenever they decided to spend more of our tax money than we had… Read more »

Just wondering how come we never hear about welfare or unemployment going bankrupt?

I am not in favor for any changes in the age requirements for SS and medicare/medicade for individuals older than 50. It is not our fault that the politicians, against our will, robbed the benefits and wasted the money to get votes. The one change I am in favor or is to stop using the funds form these programs for any other government function. Another change that needs to be done is if the politicians want to reduce benefits or increase age requirements, the same happens to their retirement programs. A better idea would be to do away with their benefits and enroll them into SS. My bet if this were to happen it would be fixed today.

I believe its been around but a comforting good re-read Alan Simpson, the Senator from Wyoming, calls senior citizens the ‘Greediest Generation’ as he compared “Social Security” to a Milk Cow with 310 million teats. Here’s a response in a letter from PATTY MYERS in Montana … I think she is a little ticked off! She also tells it like it is! ………………………………………………………………………………. Hey, Alan, let’s get a few things straight!!!!! 1. As a career politician, you have been on the public dole (tit) for FIFTY YEARS. 2. I have been paying Social Security taxes for 48 YEARS (since I was 15 years old. I am now 63). 3. My Social Security payments, and those of millions of other Americans, were safely tucked away in ‘an interest bearing account’ for decades until you political pukes decided to raid the account and give OUR money to a bunch of losers in… Read more »

Elections for 2016 will be the most critical. People need to stop voting the same politicians term after term. The desease is incombency, the same people who are causing the problems. Vote them all out in 2016. Wake up folks!

Well 1% isn’t much (especially when compared to the increases in food and medical expenses) but better than nothing. How much of an increase did Congress vote themselves for next year? How much of an increase are Federal employees going to get? I noticed no mention was made about the $716 billion Obama robbed from Medicare to pay for Medicaid under Obamacare. Why do our representatives and others continue to not acknowledge this theft? How can they continue to say Medicare is going broke but not mention this very important fact? I can understand AMAC not wanting to antagonize Obama because if they do he might refuse to sign the bill if it’s passed but Republican congressmen should be bringing this up every chance possible so Seniors who are Democrats will find out and realize Obama does NOT have care about them and neither do their Democrat congressmen. You can… Read more »
