Implications of Russia’s Invasion

invasion

Russia miscalculated. Events in Ukraine, across Europe, and globally – are moving fast, as Russia’s invasion continues to leave a path of fear, destruction, and death, creating growing refugee streams into Europe, upending longstanding assumptions around international security, law, and energy interdependence. As days pass, this looks increasingly like a blunder, with significant implications.

For starters, Russia has broken the post-WWII consensus that imagined civilized countries would not invade their neighbors, would not abandon established legal and moral norms, not endanger global security, trade, and interdependence. Expectations that Russia respected these norms are shattered.

At this point, implications of the invasion – and its surprising expansion – are several and concerning. While the use of nuclear weapons scary scenarios of World War III are overblown, the impact will last.

What really seems to be happening is that Mr. Putin thought this would be easy, painless, and prove himself a global force. He has overreached; none of that is true. Cocksure and militaristic, untroubled by moral and legal infractions, convinced that he could muscle over a weakly-led West, he has triggered an avalanche of opposition, which he likely did not foresee.

Within Ukraine, the people are irate, patriotic, willing to risk all and die, as many have already, to oppose this brutal, unprovoked, and highly destructive invasion. In places like Kiev, so poignantly celebrated by epic composers like Mussorgsky and his “Pictures at an Exhibition” – featuring the “Bells of Kiev” – the willingness to die for freedom and to oppose the invasion was not forecast.

Then in Europe, in concert with The United States, a new level of opposition has emerged. Germany has shut off the Nord-stream 2 pipeline, despite Germany, Poland, and Hungary, in particular, being highly dependent on Russia for oil and gas.

Europe only produces a third of its own energy, so it depends heavily on imports. Seventy percent of their natural gas comes from three countries, Russia, the US, and Qatar. While the US has gradually ramped up experts to Europe of gas in recent years, the process was slow. Now it may accelerate.

New logic suggests that the US Administration – if they finally sanction Russia’s oil and gas sector – will need to prepare for Russia to cut off supplies to Europe, which amount to 30 percent of all Europe’s oil and 40 percent of their natural gas.

If this happens, where will Russia get oil and gas? With the North Sea area having gone slack years ago, which is what triggered dependence on Russia, a rethink on energy may occur. Biden and others around the world may be pressed to restart and accelerate fossil fuel extraction, refinement, and export, which could be good for the Europeans and for the US job market and energy sector.

To keep the Europeans in line with heavy sanctions on Russian oil – effectively punishing Russia where it hurts, denying them revenue – the Administration may have to say that “climate change can wait,” and restart drilling, pipelines, fracking, and the policies of Trump and prior free-market advocates, which had made the US “energy independent” a mere 18 months ago.

This about-face would have major implications, positively fueling Europe, refilling their (at 30 percent) fuel reserves, bolstering the US economy, and firmly vindicating energy independence. We will see if the courage exists to put sanctions on Russia’s oil sector, and then to support Europe for doing so.

Other implications are both more and less obvious. If this invasion is not reversed, heavily punished, and Russia forced to back down, China may see an opportunity to hit Taiwan. The tolerance for illegal activity, violence, and invasion may have just risen.

On the flip side, if the Russian people’s opposition to this invasion and its immoral, illegal, heinous aspects grows, the impact inside Russia of political opposition could be profound. Putin may find his government – as autocratic and intolerant as it is – on defense. Protests continue to grow.

Finally, the global revulsion at this act of medieval conquest, seemingly indifferent to human rights, international law, and all-prevailing post-WWII norms, may unify the West, NATO, and even opposition to Russia’s ally China. The battle between lawful and unlawful, free and unfree, moral and immoral, democracy and communism or former communist ways, may be joined.

In the grand scheme, this invasion appears to be a horrible error by Putin, a clear misreading of history, Western power, will, and resolve to punish a brutal assault on freedom and democracy. That misreading is both Putin’s fault and – to some degree – the fault of shabby diplomacy up to the invasion. That said, we are all now here.

The future will be, in some important ways, defined by how strongly, with courage and unity, the West responds to this breaking of glass, this bold violation of humanity, law, and morality by Russia.

RBC,

I’m still awaiting a reply to the question I asked yesterday, so I’ll re-state it again today.

I see this solution of exporting large quantities of American natural gas, in the form of LNG (liquified natural gas) to multiple countries in Europe as the solution to cutting European dependence on Russian energy sources being trotted out by a myriad of politicians on our side. Question though. The Biden administration has slashed domestic drilling for both oil and natural gas within the United States, canceled thousands of drilling leases on federal lands, and instructed the major banks, via the federal regulators tasked with auditing them, to cease lending to our energy companies. All of which has resulted in a major drop in the amount of natural gas produced in this country and is reflected in the current higher prices that American consumers now have to pay to heat their homes, cook their food, as well as inflate the prices of every product made by American companies dependent upon natural gas for what they produce.

Just last week FERC announced a new set of restrictions on natural gas pipelines, that will result in higher prices and further cutbacks in natural gas supplies produced and readily available domestically. The result from that will be the cost to ship from well head to end user will now increase more for the pipelines impacted. Again, all this adds up to significantly less natural gas actually being produced domestically today than under President Trump, as it become less economical to produce new supplies. That shortfall has already resulted in higher natural gas prices within the United States, as most people are aware. Simple supply and demand where, as the supply drops, for whatever reason, prices rise to reflect the greater demand for a much less abundant resource.

Now for my question. We no longer have an excess of natural gas available for export to Europe in the quantities required to off-set what Russia currently supplies Europe with, without a corresponding price increase resulting here domestically. That is a fact. I actually track the energy markets daily, so I know what the real production numbers are and I have accurate estimates of what the EU, as a whole, purchases from Russia in terms of natural gas. So has anyone on our political side actually sat down and spoken to anyone in the energy industry, not some Lobbyist in Washington, D.C,, but the actual heads of a number of major natural gas producers in this country, to see how this proposed solution could be done WITHOUT a massive price increase to the American economy (power plants, chemical firms, etc.) or the creation of potential supply shortages here? Which would fuel even higher prices and more inflation.

The notion of the Biden administration doing a complete 180 and reversing every destructive energy policy they have enacted since Day One is NOT a realistic expectation. So we have to wait at least until January of 2025 for any meaningful reversal in energy policies. Republicans in Washington have to stop setting unrealistic expectations with the American public, that the Biden administration will have some sudden epiphany and see the errors of their ways and suddenly adopt the correct energy policies of the last administration. The left has some very real objectives in what they want the United States to look like and crushing the American fossil fuel sector is key to forcing higher energy prices onto the American economy to accomplish reducing our economic growth and prosperity.

We produce substantially less oil and natural gas in this country, than what was produced on a daily basis under the Trump administration. Therefore, the proposed solution to ship vast quantities of LNG to Europe to replace Russian natural gas in a non-starter. Unless what you’re advocating for is that Americans pay significantly higher energy prices, more in-line with what Europeans pay today (up to as much as 3X in term of natural gas prices), so any massive natural gas export policy could be done within the existing regulatory and production framework.

I await your reply. Thanks.

This is simple. Russia has not miscalculated that badly. It will take more time for the USA to get back up to speed with NG exports thanks to the blind administration for making the country energy dependent again with the crippling executive orders of last year. The powers controlling events know exactly what they are doing and they are achieving the goals of their agenda.

This is just one more example of the fact we have had idiots running more and more of the government every day. Since reading about State Department negotiations in 1969 I have never agreed with anything they have done. There is no compassion, honesty or common sense in anything they do. In addition to that our national priorities seem to change with each new administration. It’s easy to understand why we haven’t seemed to make things better on the world stage. While I like the idea of helping people be free and promoting democracy, it’s not always practical. In addition to the blood and treasure this requires, the country also has to be ready to remain in the country for decades like we did in Germany and Japan. I don’t see the political will. As far as this debacle…scaling down domestic energy production making us dependent on other energy producers (like Russia for example) makes reining in Putin almost impossible.

The education system in the USA has failed to educate the population in even BASIC economics. Too many adults cannot define the words deficit and debt, have zero grasp on the effects of trillion dollar handouts, and who think that giving up energy independence is good for the country. I agree with the comments from PaulE. The miscalculations of this administration are piling up.

Something that you have failed to address is this: The USA CIA has 11 biolabs in Ukraine. Russia has taken those out, thank God. Ukraine is the place where the children of Pelosi, Kerry, Biden, and Romney are on boards of energy companies, none of which are anything but plants to get unlawful money from the companies/Ukranian deep state and launder it back to their families. The Khazarian Mafia are deeply embedded in Ukraine and there is a huge human trafficking/pedophilia network in Ukraine. Putin knows all of this. He is actually helping the people of Ukraine get freed from this horrendous evil that has its clutches around them, AND around the USA. Nowhere am I seeing anything about any of this being discussed other than in a few places by some very brave people including Good Dog, Bongino, X22 and And We Know among them. I would like you to do some digging and find out these truths and report on them.

There is no move to restart or accelerate fossil fuels extraction and refinement anywhere in the world but Russia and China, because the rest of us are being crushed by the Global Warmists. The day before Joe Biden was elected the price of a barrel of oil was $37. It’s been going up steadily ever since because that’s what Biden’s Warmist puppet-masters intend.

People living on the east and west coasts don’t realize the US Government kept much of the land in between. 50% of Wyoming and 90% of Nevada are Federal lands. The second thing Joe Biden did, after cancelling the Federal permit for the Keystone XL pipeline was to cancel ALL new Federal oil and gas leasing, including millions of acres on land and in the Gulf of Mexico. If we can’t lease it, we can’t drill it, and can’t produce it. So we CAN’T produce much more oil and gas than we do now for any period of time.

Biden’s puppet-masters have refused to approve any of the 6 pending permits for new oil and gas export terminals, so even if we want to, we CAN’T export more oil and gas than we do now.

Even an about-face on these policies won’t work because payout or break-even for most new oilfields and refineries and terminals takes a decade or more. We’re not fools and we’ve been through this with the Warmists; as soon as we invest and the emergency passes, the puppet-masters will shut us down and we’ll lose everything.

So, the author of this article is either ignorant or foolish. As long as the Warmists control our government, you’re not getting more oil or gas, because they don’t want you to have more, they want you to have less.

There is hope. With the rumor out of Shanghai that China will not follow Russia, it may be that the world will unite against violation of another country for no other reason than greed. This is a big win for progress of humanity.
On the first day of the attack on Ukraine it looked like Putin had miscalculated and there was a 50 to 50 chance he would fail in the end. If the world unites against him, he is finished. I hope elites in this country realize this is a message to them too. Don’t even dream of subjugating all the plain people.

Jackass Josef can’t admit his mistake without proving President Trump’s energy plan was correct. . . . Only a Jackass refuses to admit their mistakes, Jackass Josef lives up to his name at America’s expense. Soon, our gasoline prices will skyrocket to unheard of prices which will cause EVERY consumer product price to greatly increase and Jackass Josef will blame Trump, as he should, because it’s Trump’s fault our Jackass “elect” can’t do what’s right without admitting he’s been wrong all along! . . . This article just shows how out of touch AMAC is when it comes to geopolitical issues. Ukraine has one of the most corrupt governments in the world. The Globalist use it as a playground for child trafficking, drug trafficking and money laundering. If you don’t believe it look at how the Biden’s along with other political elitist’s families use it to keep their children on the boards of Ukrainian companies. Also, check out the Washington Post article dated August 30, 2005, titled “U. S. to aid Ukraine in Countering Bioweapons.” The article states that then Senator Barack Obama and Senator Richard Lugar visited Ukraine and negotiated an agreement for the U.S. to fund the security for Ukraine’s bio-labs. Is that where the next pandemic was coming from? Just asking for a friend.

I have patiently listened to all the rationalizations about the Ukrainian invasion by Russia. I have patiently listened to stories of Ukrainian corruption, that they are basically the same population, that they should just surrender to Russian rule as did the Crimea. May I respectfully remind those detractors to the Ukraine of the “Peace” that Stalin imposed on the Ukraine? The Ukrainian people resisted Stalin’s efforts to put their individually owned farms under Stalin’s collectivist, communistic system. How did Stalin respond? Oh, yes. It was a man-made famine on the Unkrainians where 4 million of its people, or 13 percent, starved, slowly, to death, while Stalin’s armed men collected all the grain produced there while complaining Ukraine did not meet its “quota.”

I hope that Darlene Rufra asks her “friend” how she feels watching, in real time, Ukraine challenging Russia and fighting in the streets. Then, Darlene Rufra should ask her “friend” how she will feel watching millions of surviving Ukrainians slowly starving to death when Putin imposes his Russian-style “peace” on them.

There is always one in every crowd who has never bothered to pick up a history book.

Most of the walking dead dems believe this as deeply as anything can be believed. Sniffy et al would need to risk their cretinous base in order to expand domestic extraction. It sure would be nice to see the oil and gas flowing again but its very doubtful.

The Ukrainians seem to be in the midst of dragging themselves out of a corrupt past and in to a self governed and more enlightened existence. They weren’t there yet. They were not a shining example. But, their reaction to this attempt to pull them back to the bad old days is evidence of their will to be free and determine their own future. They are not perfect. Who is? But, they have become a focal point for people around the world who want freedom and self determination. I will be praying that they survive, succeed and grow as a people from this devastating period in their history. More importantly, I am praying for them as persons and God’s children to survive and recover from this terrible attack.

First call for joint maneuvers with the Baltic countries and Poland. Get on Purim’s door step. Plenty of troops, sailors, armoire, artillery and ammo right there.

Ukraine invite NATO ships to visit Odessa. Essentially, making it impossible for Putin to attack there without injury to NATO personnel and equipment.

Immediately have have the Saudis, et al, up production. Likewise Nigeria. Simultaneously tell the radicals in the US that their green agenda must wait due to this crisis.

Fast track admission of Sweden and Finland to NATO.

Insist that Turkey block Russian ships from passing through the Bosporus.

Blockade the exit from the Baltic.

An intensive propaganda campaign to Russian troops and the Russian people. Create another Yeltsin in Russia. Overthrow Putin.

It is history in repeat, and most Europeans had led in the new drive for green energy, and secondly they in Europe, especially Germany, had dismantled all forms of energy, not to mention their Nuclear energy whish is the cleanest energy on the planet. I do recall all those western Gov. who applauded Biden’s election, which was really a coup, were overjoyed that Biden won. PERHAPS IT IS GOD’S WILL THAT THE ORIGINAL SINS OF YESTERDAY MAY NOT BE AS PRONOUNCED AS TODAYS. We are seeing PUTIN, a man that had not changed over the last few decades, and was always intent on reforming the Soviet Union. It was not that Putin has a great military, he lied to the people, even compared the leader of Ukraine as a NAZI. The only thing different from a Nazi and Communist dictator is the name. OUR BIGGEST DISASTER IS NEWS OUTLETS, YES BOTH IN RUSSIA AND AMERICA !!! Hitler controlled the news, and had attacked all Jews as the cause of all problems in Europe, just as Putin painted the Ukraine president as a Nazi, but he is of Jewish decent and lost almost all of his family to Hitler’s war in WW2. THE TRUE ENEMIES OF FREEDOM IS THE PRESS, WHICH SPINS, AND LIES ABOUT MANY THINGS IN CURRENT WORLD ORDER. Many in Ukraine hated Stalin, and he was not a savior of the people ! Stripped as national monuments, throughout Ukraine Stalin killed more people in the process of forming the Soviet Union that history often is ignored. THEY WERE BRUTALLY SLAIN AND STARVED BY STALIN IN THE RUSSIA EMPIRE BY AS MUCH AS HITLER. The true heroes are the people of Ukraine, who are doing nothing more than Americans did in forming our own history, and WW1, WW2, to fight for freedoms declared in our own constitution. Chamberlin was like our leaders today, to appease and not open their eyes to what Putin is, just like they hoped before Hitler. Will Russia stop with Ukraine, one has to guess that he had no intent on stopping, but with results today he may have to rethink his desire to reform the Soviet Union, truly he will not live long enough to ever see that happen. But history will show that America on the decline with corruptions and totally controlled news outlets maybe not be the resolving world order it was once held. Canada, Australia and other western nations are now proving freedoms lost because of the loss of true news outlets, and communism on the march. We have to pray for the people of Ukraine, this is a war of David faces Goliath, and it may prove that David is the leader of Ukraine, Biden is a feckless weak and unequal to any task, but proves again that he survives only because of the corruption in the press. AMERICANS ARE WAKING UP, BUT TRULY WE HAVE PEOPLE THAT HAVE NEVER UNDERSTOOD HISTORY OR CARE ABOUT ANYTHING OTHER THEN THEMSELVES, AND TAKE THE FREEDOM FOR GRANTED.

The people of Ukraine will get no help from Obiden other than lip service. Nothing concrete that will hurt Putrid. Why? Simple really. This is Obama’s 3rd term. As in black racist, communist, Muslim Obama, just like his father was. The people of Ukraine are mostly white and Christian. Now Putrid is bombing “military targets” like schools and apt. buildings. Killing as many civilians as he can like his idol Josef Stalin. By the way, Stalin was a big fan of Peter the Great as well. Stalin was an amoral psychopath, paranoid with a gangster mentality with zero regard for human life. Did he kill 20 million or 60 million? And without a nuke. Putrid’s got lots of them.

AMAC – you have it wrong, Ukraine is entirely corrupt with bio labs on the border of Russia, the human trafficking central location is in Ukraine. Many Nazi war criminals and their families reside there, and the Bidens did business there for millions of dollars with Burisma oil. Don’t make them out to be clean and pristine when they are absolutely not. Also the two regions that declared their independence from Ukraine have been under constant shelling for years,. 14,000+ dead because of Ukraine. But nobody talks about that. Why? The shelling had escalated to a new level so those two regions the DNR and the LPR asked Russia to come in and intervene. Ukraine had no business shelling them whatsoever – they should’ve given them their independence and that should’ve been that. But they’re evil and they couldn’t stop themselves so Russia has to do so. It’s not a conflict we need to be involved in, let them sort it out.

Since Jackass Josef Biden shut off OUR own Keystone Pipeline and disallowed further oil well drilling, RUSSIA NOW OWNS HIM! . . . Jackass Josef can’t admit his mistake without proving President Trump’s energy plan was correct. . . . Only a Jackass refuses to admit their mistakes, Jackass Josef lives up to his name at America’s expense. Soon, our gasoline prices will skyrocket to unheard of prices which will cause EVERY consumer product price to greatly increase and Jackass Josef will blame Trump, as he should, because it’s Trump’s fault our Jackass “elect” can’t do what’s right without admitting he’s been wrong all along! . . . Welcome to Socialism people!

Climate change can wait? Heavens to betsy, weve only got twelve, er, five years left before the earth shrugs and humanity goes extinct. Most of the walking dead dems believe this as deeply as anything can be believed. Sniffy et al would need to risk their cretinous base in order to expand domestic extraction. It sure would be nice to see the oil and gas flowing again but its very doubtful.

I love the way RBC writes optimism in his pieces. Thanks so much. Maybe this invasion with all the world (minus China?) so against it might just help all of us to realize how much we all HATE war and learn to live within our boundaries, respect the freedom of others and God help us: learn to love our neighbors no matter how different they seem! Lord have mercy on all of us!

Two thoughts on this article: 1. Biden’s sorority sister handlers are True Believers in global warming, so it is highly unlikely they will ramp up fossil fuel production. 2.Mistaking kindness for weakness is a common error, which Putin has made in his assessment of the West.

It appears to me that the author of this article is totally discounting the potential impact of our self-destructive leftist reactionaries on the short and long range actions that the US implements.
