According to sciencenotes.org: “Why Leaves Change Color” Leaves change color in fall as chlorophyll breaks down and other pigments become visible. Anthocyanins do not break down, they are there all the time. When chlorophyll breaks down, the other pigments become visible. LauraC 8 months ago Tail of the Dragon is actually mostly in Tennessee with the tamest part of it in North Carolina just across the Tennessee border. Watch out for the crazy motorcyclists if you venture to drive it. JKHero 8 months ago Your answer to question #1 is bogus. Anthocyanins are not “breaking down.” Anthocyanins are “forming.” Sugars (which are being trapped in the leaves) react with the anthocyanins to produce fall colors.
